Cracking the Vault (EVENT, OPEN TO ALL)

The big plot points that create pivotal developments all (eventually) wind up here, whether they like it or not.

Cracking the Vault (EVENT, OPEN TO ALL)

Postby Gerhard Melsbach » Tue Apr 17, 2012 10:36 am

The supply situation was beginning to get desperate.
Even with Henry's little duplicating machine and Gerhard's diligence with the Company's miles upon miles of paperwork, there was nothing they could to to rectify the fact that there was no way to bring in any new supplies while the deck was out and there was a deadly monster in the swamp.
While plans were being worked out to take care of those issues, the biggest problem at hand was working out how to sustain themselves in the mean time. Even with their smaller numbers, there was only so much food and drink available on base, both bases, medical supplies growing scarcer by the day and building materials even more so.
It was while hunting through his cupboards for one last clean IV bag that Gerhard caught a glimpse of the old dilapidated building set out separate from the main base, just as worn and battered at the reconfigured townhouse.

The warehouse.

No one had really even thought of the building, nor its matching partner across the bridge, too caught up in the crazy goings on in the swamp and on the docks and elsewhere to bother getting around to investigating.
All it took was a bit of conversation, as well a quick bulletin on the announcement board, and a small group was quickly gathered for the 'expedition', not a one of them with any idea what they might find once they broke the rusted locks from the heavy metal doors.
There was hope, speculation, but not a single one actually knew.

And it was time to find out.

12 was not a bird to sit behind and let people go into a potentially dangerous situation alone, especially not when his teammates were involved. The hybrid had followed behind Gerhard silently, unsure of what, if anything, he should say at the time. They were basically charging in blind, and he could already think of a plethora of horrible things that could possibly befall the party; this was definitely not helping his confidence in the outcome of the current situation. He was closer than usual, sacrificing a bit of the safe distance for something more similar to protection detail. Maybe he could be of some use to Gerhard and the rest, but for now, he was really just hoping they wouldn't accidentally open a can of something absolutely horrible. The warehouse gave him an overall bad feeling, and the thought of actually going inside it made him shudder, feathers ruffling as well. What was it that they were supposed to be looking for? 12 couldn't imagine anything positive coming out of that building, so being optimistic about the results was more than a little difficult. Of course, he could be entirely wrong, but given the general creepy as shit atmosphere the place gave off, the Scout figured he would be right. He didn't want to be right, oh no. If he was, things would undoubtedly get worse, and 12 figured that both teams currently had more than enough on their plate--adding yet more mishaps and creepy things did seem like a bad idea.

Well, they wouldn't know until they tried. Unfortunately.

Today was serious business. Gerhard had asked for assistance, and there was a great big chain that needed to be cracked apart. More than likely, the rest of the team, while capable, either wouldn't have the tools, or wouldn't have the technique, so this is where he came in, along-side his beautiful industrial hand-torch. Strolling from the base to the warehouse, an eye on the water and the still ruined docks, he double-checked his pockets and compartment, sure to bring along all of the essentials; snacks, fluids, torch, respirator (always have to have that) and, most importantly, a pocket PKE meter. Over the last week, radiation had become something of a concern. It started with shorted equipment, and he had been consistently checking areas for whatever source of radiation was throwing off his calculations.

Spying the troupe, he worked into a jog, catching them from the side. "Hey boys! We all ready to do some exploring on this fine april day?"

Madison was trodding along silently behind the excited engineer, in a much more somber mood. He hadn't been around the last time they went exploring, so it was no wonder he was as happy as he was. She, on the other hand, wasn't taking any chances. She had her shotgun in hand, looking around nervously. There was no way she was going to be fighting any prospective monsters with a shovel this time. At least Henry was well equipped.

"Let's jus' get it over wit', yeah?"

The TentaMedic didn't bother to comment, his body language tensing as they grew closer and closer to the warehouses.
Like 12, he could feel that there was something off about the old building, something that made his tentacles twitch and flicker through colors. Not to mention the fact he was leaving Rufus alone in the Infirmary.
Not that he didn't trust the RED, after all, the man really couldn't get around on his own very well, but he knew how quiet it got in the Infirmary, how things echoed...
At least he'd been able to move the bed so his patient could get a view, small window or no.
Maybe it would be some small comfort...

The warehouse itself was huge, almost half the full size of the base itself, and it had the look of a purpose-built space, not the refurbished home-type feel of the main base. Large and square, the roof was a simple slant, and the doors were massive, heavy wood reinforced with riveted strips of now-rusted metal. They were locked up tight, thick loops of chain wound through the heavy metal handles, a hefty old padlock so rusted even its own key would have never cracked it open.
Whoever had last locked the place up sure as hell didn't want anybody else getting in.
Period.

Whoever had locked the warehouse had done so with a good reason.
The BLUs weren't the first to try breaking inside, nor would they probably be the last to attempt doing so.
----

He had made a sprint from one crate to the other--or, rather, he limped his way as quickly as his wounded leg would allow him, glancing over his shoulder every three steps to make sure he remained out and away from the incoming onslaught. He had run out of ammo, someone had trampled his Dead Ringer, and he had lost his knife, as it was still embedded in the back of one of those... Those things. He couldn't find a decent name for those things, his mind was reeling too fast for the time being.

'Think, Dimitri, think you dumbass...'

They spotted him.

'SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN MY ARM WHAT HAPPENED TO MY ARM WHAT DID HE JUST DO TO MY ARM NO RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN GET AWAY FROM ME GET AWAY GET AWAY GET --'

The last thing he'd remember hearing was a sickening, wet noise when they spilled his insides all over the concrete floor.

"Just wot are ya chaps doin' out 'ere?"

The group of BLUs would find themselves in the company of Enrico, half caked in mud... and blood. His hands especially were so red, that if he wore a vest and tie, could pass for an insane Medic. He eyed the group before what they were after. "If ya wanted in, ya should of said somethin', I've got the key but it goes to the other side of the buildin'.. to the Garage. Mah vehicle is in thar. What are ya lookin' for anyways?" He asked, absolutely unfazed with the fact he was dripping chest to toe in mud, muck, and blood.

"Should know what's on that side of the buildin... now this side was mah Engie's and Solly's side. They shared the other half of the building. Solly used it on and off for target practice so don't panic if ya see what looks like REDs about to shoot ya."

Gerhard just barely kept himself from jerking around, having been so focused on the warehouse that he'd missed the Sniper walking up, and he had to inhale a breath before he spoke up to keep himself from snapping.
"Vell, zhe intent ist to hopefully discover some supplies ve can use to bolster vhat little ve haff left ins zhe base..."
He trailed off, frowning at the bloody mess of a Sniper.
"Herr, vhy are you all bloody?"

Henry's appearance had been expected--12 hadn't thought for a second that the Engineer would miss out on this. Madison and Enrico were a bit less preempted, though the only one that got any measurable reaction was Enrico; after all, appearing covered in blood when most people assembled were tense was perhaps not the best idea. The hybrid hadn't taken his eyes off the revived Sniper since he'd shown up, looking perhaps a little disturbed. Where had the blood come from, even? It was an awful lot of the stuff...there had to be a reasonable explanation, but for now, there was a lot of red and questions hanging around. That seemed like a bad sign to him, and he cast a momentary worried glance up at Gerhard, taking a deep breath. Now was not the time to freak out and puff up--now was the time to be calm. After all, where they were going was potentially dangerous, especially of the feeling he was getting was any indicator. The bird edged towards Henry, the vibe from the building more than enough to set off handler protection instincts. It took him a moment to realize that his little bout of repositioning might possibly be taken as some form of insult to Enrico, but he sort of doubted that. The thought was there, though, and that was enough.

"A-Anything in particular we're lookin' for in there...?" he asked, eyes flicking back and forth from Henry to Gerhard to the building. One of them had to have some kind of answer.

“Hey! Vaits for me!” A more than eager, enthusiastic one-eyed sniper came bolting towards the group at top speed, hoping their excursion hadn’t already finished.

After having visited with Gerhard concerning his own capabilities at being social, he decided to go and join in on this trip to the darker side of the base. He had passed by the large structure on his own when he would jog in the mornings, and the eerie, unsettling feeling that radiated from the warehouse both aroused his curiosity and sent chills down his spine. Admittedly, he was interested.

So, with his sickle strapped to his waist and his mood sky high, he ran up to the little team of adventurers with a broad grin. “Doktor! Doktor, dids you starts yet?!” He asked through winded pants and gasps as he came to a halt before them. At noticing Enrico, however, he quickly straightened himself up and shot the other a shy smile.

"I dunno what we're gonna find in dere, 12," Madison said, holding her shotgun a bit closer. She didn't blame the scout for being nervous. "But if I see anyt'in' dat moves, I'mma shoot first an' ask questions later. Jus' warnin' y'all." At least this time they (probably) wouldn't have to worry about drowning, and a shotgun would probably work better on any monsters they encountered than a kukri, a crossbow, and a suicidal soldier. Plus Henry probably had a couple of goodies on hand that would help.

"So, how are we gettin' dis open?," she asked, addressing the group. "We jus' gonna bust down de door or-- what?" She trailed off as the tall Kiwi emerged from the bushes, covered in mud and blood. "Oh, hey Rico. You been huntin' again?" This could work out. If anything else a Sniper could just shoot whatever they came up against in the face. "Well, right, as Ger was sayin', we're gonna get in here an'..." she trailed off once again as another figure approached, this one she didn't recognize. She looked the one-eyed Sniper up and down before giving her tentacled friend a bit of a sideways glance. "Y' didn't tell me we got a new teammate."

"Vell, zhat's because he ist not new."
Gerhard managed a small smile for the Russian's sake, not wanting to get the blonde down when he seemed in such a good mood.
"Allo, Bosko. It's gute to see you out and about, I trust you ah feeling besser...?"

While the BLUs were gathering themselves before the rather ominous looking old warehouse, across the way, a very particular patchwork was watching them. Well, maybe watching wasn't the best word, since his short sightedness was damn near crippling, but Jericho's large saucer-like ears and his sharp nose could tell him more than enough.
And right now, they were telling him that something was going on over at the BLU base.
Frowning, the chimera turned, trotting into the dilapidated structure that was RED base to seek out his Pyro.

The sniper glanced down at the thick red on his hands and pants before letting out a small chuckle. "Whoops, forgot to wash mahself. Yeah, I caught a nice fifteen foot gator this mornin' in one of my traps and just got done guttin' and skinning it. Was gonna make ya some gator sausage and gator burgers. Really good. Lean meat, no fat so I'll have to use an egg to add something to the burgers to keep it together. Littl' bit of spice like cajun and should be a winner." He said, careful not to get gator blood over any of the team mates.

When Bosko appeared suddenly to join the group, the Kiwi sniper blinked in surprised before smiling back at him with a nod. "Heya. Bosko right? Fancy coming to see what the commotion is about?" He turns to Gerhard. "Yanno, if you all just go to the other side, there's a big ol' garage door. Gimme about ten minutes to wash up and come back with the key. Should still be in mah attic bunk." He offered.

The hybrid stared up at Bosko for a few seconds, the Sniper's empty eye socket occupying his attention before he shook his head and broke the stare. That was rude, anyway. He turned his attention back to Enrico for a moment, brows furrowed in mild confusion. "How--oh. Right." Personally, 12 doubted that the key would still be wherever it had wound up last, but somebody here had to be an optimist. It wasn't him, though. "I just think we should get in and out as quick as possible. Place gives me all kinds'a creeps." To emphasize the point, he shuddered, feathers briefly ruffling. "So m-maybe we could just...yeah?" He cast Gerhard a hopeful look, digging his talons into the dirt.

His instincts were telling him to get out of here, but he knew better than to follow that part of them in situations like this. There wouldn't be much margin for error when they got in, if at all. What kind of risks would be there? In any other case, he would've already tried to get in and scope the place out; especially being that his handler was here. God, he was really slipping. But there wasn't really any way to get in...maybe he'd be okay for now.

While the group discussed the pros and cons of dead alligators Henry proceeded as planned. Donning his welding mask, he knelt in front of the door to give the lock a good inspection. It was well crafted, seemingly by hand. Almost a shame to waste such good workmanship.

Ah well, que sera and all that.

"EYES CLOSED, FOLKS. SHITS ABOUT TO GET SHINY IN A BAD, BAD, WAY."

Cranking up the torch, he went straight to work, carving a neat line through through the padlock, side-to-side.

Gerhard frowned thoughtfully at the Sniper's suggestion, then shook his head.
"Maybe later, Enrico. I vould prefer to get zhis over vizh."
Though he kept a neutral expression, his anxiety considering the situation at hand was made obvious by his tentacles, the long lengths of muscles twisting over themselves and gripping at the ground as well as at the feet of those nearest to him, one limb curling gently around 12's ankle.

gonna move this right along then

Postby Puffin » Sun Apr 29, 2012 11:44 am

Madison looked at the 'new' sinper once again. If he wasn't new, then where was... aw, fuck it. It didn't matter. Her thoughts were interrupted by Henry's warning, and she managed to cover her eyes with her hands just in time before he began the business of weakening the doors. She waited until the sounds of the torch subsided, and they were left with a much weaker structure in front of them.
"Well, let's jus' get on wit' it, yeah?" She slammed her boot up against the weakened door a couple of times before it finally broke away and fell to the ground with a loud metal clang. She wasted no time, heading in first despite her nervousness. Ladies first, especially when the lady was the strongest and had a shotgun.

Meanwhile, Jericho wasn't the only RED who had noticed the commotion. Niklas was watching the scene from the comfort of the RED porch, from a safe enough distance away that the blinding light from Henry's torch wasn't harmful. He sat on the front steps in quiet contemplation when the patchwork hybrid came padding up the steps. The chimera had almost slipped through the doorway before he spoke up.
"You were watching them too, weren't you?" He gave his teammate a sideways glance. Curiosity was getting the best of both of them, so it seemed. "Do you think we should tell the others? Maybe go help them out?"

Jericho paused, turning to look up towards the doctor. He frowned slightly, but nodded, stepping back from the door to sit down beside the man that had saved him from a bloody and unpleasant death.
"Trust some BLU, but warehouses..."
The chimera's frown deepened.
"They're not safe. BLU or RED. Don't know why, but- There's something wrong about them."
He couldn't quite put the feeling into words, an agitation that made his ears droop and his fur stand on end, that made him want to run far, far away rather than stand and fight like he would against pretty much everything else. Something bad was in those buildings, something bad had been done and locked up inside, a danger to everyone and everything. The fact that he got the same feeling no matter which side just made things worse.
"Am going to tell others. Keep watch for me? Just in case?"

The first thing he noticed was that there was some kind of hubbub going on outside. The second thing was that there was some definite RED presence outside watching the hubbub, and he figured he might as well go over and socialize a bit. Plus, finding out what was going on was probably a good idea, and that was something he should also be doing. Hubbubs didn't generally happen with no reason, so there had to be something! Kurt made his way out at a leisurely pace, beer in one hand and a cigarette lit and resting inbetween his teeth. He peered around the door, winding up staring for a second at the patchwork hybrid. Okay, he was definitely either tripping all sorts of balls or in some kind of strange level of hell. At this point, he was just going to completely ignore the strangeness and get on with everything else. That was probably far better for his sanity.

"So, uh. What's goin' on over here? Sure looks like somethin' t' me."

Niklas managed a small smile for his hybrid teammate. "So you're nervous? I am too. We've already been dealing with a swamp monster and dwindling supplies, so something tells me that whatever we find in there won't be much better." It didn't take animal instinct to figure that one out. "But we really don't have to many options, do we?" These problems weren't going to fix themselves, after all.

He was about to answer Jericho's question when he heard someone approach behind him. He turned around to find their Engineer, the only he had barely seen. "The BLUs are breaking into their warehouse, it looks like," he said, pointing his finger in that direction. "We're contemplating what to do, and watching." He looked at Jericho once again, scratching his beard. "How about you go find Connal and James, and once everyone's here we'll decide what to do. I'll stay out here with... Kurt, right?" he asked, looking at the tall Texan once again.
