The Goner (Open, Sub-Event) [All RED, get in here]

The big plot points that create pivotal developments all (eventually) wind up here, whether they like it or not.

The Goner (Open, Sub-Event) [All RED, get in here]

Respawn was a reliable system, for the most part. On average, the majority of respawns were successful, spawning a sentient, living human body with memories of their recent events with little error. What few malfunctions there were tended to be just temporary, removed with a backup respawn or some surgery. Swamp Rat's Respawn, however, was nowhere even close to being on par with the average, and most the mercenaries who knew that accepted it, albeit with hesitation.

But this was an incident to be marked in the history books- or more accurately, the concealed follies of RED and BLU, records to be stashed away where none would know of their existence. And by God, the mercenaries were going to know first-hand just how dark this happening became.

It had started with the typical Respawn sequence: the backup generators pumping energy into the system, retrieving data... then a red light popped up on a console. And another. And another. Within moments, the screen flashed red with emergency, and a siren sounded; first in the Respawn chamber, then gradually throughout the whole base, accompanied with blaring red alarm lights. Then everything fizzled, electronics and lights flickering as if on the verge of blackout, the siren distorting horrendously.

Throughout the erupting chaos, an automatic emergency voice cracked through the long unused intercom, speaking with an urgent female tone:

"Warning! Critical error in Respawn; Power reserves fluctuating..."

The voice continued with growing static, as the main lights finally died with a few persistent flashes, the spiraling alarms now filling the halls with eerie, blood-red, shifting shades. This ultimately seemed like a scene out of a crazy horror film; which, on reflection, could be said about the entirety of the events at Swamp Rat.

But to think, this madness would be all for a single respawn...

Connal hadn't been feeling well, recently. So far it was mostly just making him tired, so he figured sleeping it off would be the best course of action. No need to go bother Nik about it, since it probably was just because of the heat anyway. So when the sirens started blaring, that's just what he had been doing; sleeping. He even thought, at first, that the noise was part of his dream. When he came to and realized it was actually happening, he panicked.

In a blur of movement and shouting, he managed to get his gas mask and shotgun in order, and raced down the hall. He wasn't even using actual words, at that point, just trying to get everyone's attention. Once the Pyro took a second to actually listen to the words that were being broadcasted, he bellowed a barely decipherable, "COME OOOOOOOONNN!" before barreling down in the right direction.

There was, however, one thing the metal head from Michigan had forgotten. In his haste, he neglected arguably the most important article of clothing; his pants, leaving his black boxer-briefs bared to the world.

Jericho had lurched awake the moment the first siren went off, his sensitive ears all but crying in pain from the pitch as he attempted to jerk to his feet, forgetting a moment that he was sleeping inside a container and smacking his head rather soundly. Which resulted in him being rather woozy for a few moments as he finally made it out of his kennel, whining as his ears pinned down flat to either side of his head.
Goddamn, what he wouldn't give for a pair of earmuffs right now...
He came around at hearing Connal scrambling about, and he shook himself, ready to follow. Only to pause upon realizing that the Pyro, in his hurry, had run off without bottoms on.
Groaning, the chimera shuffled through his Master's things, ignoring the stuff that smelled bad or was music related as he sought out a pair of pants, eventually careening off down the hall with as much speed as he could muster and Connal's pants slung over his shoulder, teeth gripping onto the waist to keep them from slipping.

At first, Kurt was blissfully unaware of what was going on. He was asleep, comfortable, and having pleasant dreams--three things that he certainly did not take for granted. The Engineer stretched out on his bed, the sound of the alarms only just managing to wake him up. The voice over the intercom added to it, and he cracked a bleary eye open, frowning. That couldn't be good. There was no way that was. When Connal went rushing by, that was the last straw, and he sat up, rubbing his eyes and muttering to himself. Whereas the Pyro had been in a hurry, he sure wasn't--the Engineer adjusted his red and white-striped pajama bottoms, pulled on one of his uniform undershirts, and took a moment to wake himself up as much as possible. That being done, he pulled on a pair of socks, slipped on his gloves, and grabbed his toolbox and goggles.

Kurt didn't rush in getting to the respawn room, either. Yes, it was most definitely something terrible, but it was likely nothing that couldn't be fixed. Besides, he was still somewhat asleep, and running all the way there didn't seem like a good idea. There was also an entirely decent chance that he could wipe out on the way, and it was equally likely that he would fall right back asleep the second he hit the ground. No, running was not something he wanted to do. Kurt just followed along behind Jericho, briefly wondering why the hybrid was carrying pants before he decided that it was better to not question it and just move on. He put on his goggles, letting them sit on his forehead for now--easy access was better than no access. And after all, he had no idea whether he'd even need them or not. Sure, it was likely he would, but there wasn't a guarantee.

Tonight was going to be a long night. He could already feel it.

The havoc would not last forever. Such a critical situation drained power at an incredible rate: almost as soon as the turmoil began, it began to quiet again, the emergency lights flickering to dim, swinging strands of light and the siren fading into a garbled mess before finally dying. The autonomous direction signs continued to glow, pointing the way to Respawn with grim, ominous glares of scarlet.

Finally, as the maintenance door to the Respawn station was thrown open, the true carnage revealed itself. Electricity crackled around the centermost Respawn capsule, stray bolts being thrown around the others. High-grade light was pouring out of the pods, throwing ghostly shadows about the tiled room. The console at the side with flashing red in alarm, but a sudden surge of power knocked it out, also causing a flash from the overhead florescent panels. As the pods continued to crackle, one of them near the door almost literally exploded, energy surges overwhelming the internal electronics.

Yet all attention seemed to be drawn to the centermost pod, where a silhouette of a person was slowly forming itself against the incredible light.

((I'm just assuming the Respawn Room has a tiled floor. If anyone wants to correct me, I'll edit.))

The pants-less Pyro skid to a halt, bare feet squeaking against the tiled floor. Still not having noticed his state of undress, he spotted the one glowing pod, eyes wide behind tinted lenses. Heck, Connal barely registered that others were following him. Having no idea what was going on or what to do about it (or even why things got quieter), he just stood there. His shotgun was still held at the ready, but aimed towards the ground, as he stared and wondered what the fuck was happening.

Jericho wasn't far behind, slowing down as he approached the room in question so he wouldn't go sliding around like he tended to when his bulk was forced to halt too quickly. He growled softly, ears pinned back as his nostrils flared.
There was something weird going on...
Grunting, he leaned over to butt his head against the Pyro's knee, the tough denim fabric of Connal's pants scraping on the man's shin.

Kurt remained in no hurry to get to the spawn room and made it in there on his own time, looking at the other assembled REDs with a mix of sleepiness and vague irritation. "Th' heck's even happenin' here? Better be worth gettin' me up." When it became obvious that no, it was not something that either Jericho or Connal had done, he turned his attention to the respawn pod, frowning. "Aw, great. Somebody had t' go an' die." he grumbled, shaking his head. This respawn did seem a bit off, but he was all too ready to chalk that up to the fact that the system here was terrible, as he'd heard. The Engineer didn't put his toolbox down yet, instead fidgeting as the cold from the tiles below seeped into the once-warm fabric of his socks. Man, he'd been so comfy, too...

The small group huddled within the linoleum walls of the Respawn chamber were in for a horrifying experience (not like they hadn't gone through one already). What they would see would be a Respawn never before experienced in the history if the system's existence.

As if the emergency corrected itself, the glowing, centermost Respawn pod began erupting a strange smoke. All other electronics seemed to shut down, and all of the light and electricity only came from that pod. The pressure within began to escalate, slowly pushing open the safety door where the pod's own automated hinges could not. With a dark, ominous anticipation in the air, the present REDs peered in closer to attempt to distinguish the figure through the thick fumes, lights and sparks. Finally, as the door was swung wide open, one final flash of light and a surge of electricity in the flourescents above announced the apparently completed respawn. The faint silhouette of the humanoid figure within fell out, parting the smoke to either side and revealing the back wall of the once-occupied pod, sizzling and sparking with exhausted energy.

And as the air finally cleared, that same sight of a figure appeared to the mercenaries, still masked by the darkness in the room. The last few wisps gave way to show the crumpled human, and eventually, a bowl-like object that had clattered off to the side. The pitch black of the room, however, made no effort to reveal anything more of this conundrum, even as the lights above desperately tried to flicker into life again.

At first, Connal was too absorbed by the strange light show and accompanying smoke to pay Jericho's bumps much mind. Eventually, however, it dawned on him that he wasn't just feeling the chimera nudging his leg, he was feeling the outside of his pants against his (apparently) bare leg. "Hrrr, fhhk." Quite the embarrassing situation. At least he had the mask on, so neither could see how red his face just got.

The metalhead from Michigan snatched his pants a might quickly, and tried rushing to get them on. "Krrt, whhduya chrr hrm?" he asked, attempting to both gesture towards the fallen teammate and hop on one leg to get the other clothed. What he actually achieved was falling onto his backside. After a few unintelligible curse words, he again motioned from Kurt to whoever come out of Respawn, wordlessly asking the Engineer to go check. No way in hell he was taking the mask off to make conversation easier, not until his face stopped burning.

The chimera would have rolled his eyes and shaken his head at the Pyro's clumsiness, but he was rather busy peering into the gloom, body stiff as his ears pricked forward, nostrils flaring and brow furrowed as he began to growl.
The scent was familiar, but there was something... Off about it.
Off in a way that vaguely reminded him of lunchmeat that was just a little too far past the expiration date.

"That ain't good." Way to state the obvious, Kurt. He gave Connal a sleepy glare, frowning even more. "Son, I'm an Engineer, not a Medic. I c'n only do so much, here." Shaking his head, he moved forward, crouching down to get a better look at whoever it was that came out of the machine. "S'a Soldier, yeah. Ain't one I've seen, though." He looked back over his shoulder at the other two, shrugging once before getting back to what he was doing. He reached out and shook the newly-respawned RED's shoulder, gently at first. "Hey, buddy. C'mon, wake up. S'late an' all, yeah, but s'time f'r you t' get outta there, now." Maybe that would work. He really hoped it would; the sooner this was over with, the sooner he'd be able to get back to bed. That was a very high priority on his list right now, though it only just barely was second place to whatever was going on right now. Getting the lights back on had landed at a very solid fifth. "Y'think this might be a bad respawn 'r somethin'? What if we have t' send 'im through again?" He raised an eyebrow, leaning back and inspecting the Soldier. That would ruin his night.

Connal took advantage of his new seat on the floor and got his pants on properly, pulling them up as he stood. Really? Kurt was really going to use his class as an excuse? He went ahead and took his mask off to reply, "An' I'm a fuckin' Pyro, fat load a good I am here." His face still felt a bit warm, but hopefully the light was low enough for it to not be so noticeable. Bad respawn? Shit, that didn't sound good. "That can happen? Shit, I dunno, fuckin'... check his pulse, or something. Oh hey, Jer, can ya go get Nik? Surprised the whole team's not over here by now..." Yes, that was really the best he could do; send for someone else.

The chimera didn't respond at first, staring intently at the still figure, but he finally gave a slow nod, shuffling backwards out of the room. He paused a moment as he came behind Connal, then leaned forward to grab the Pyro's collar in his teeth, trying to pull the ginger out with him.
Whoever or whatever had come through the system, it had him severely spooked.

DID SOMEBODY SAY MEDIC?

Postby Puffin » Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:00 pm

Speaking of which, the resident medic was sleeping away happily in the infirmary. Or he had been, until the alarm system woke him up. Mumbling angrily, he clamped the pillow down over his head, hoping for it to just be a minor malfunction or for it to turn off on its own. He breathed a heavy sigh of relief when it did, finally ready to go back to sleep.

Or so he tried. Of course, when the alarm stopped, he found himself unable to lose consciousness. God damn it. Sighing and stretching, he fumbled around for his glasses. Well, it was probably for the best. The responsible thing to do, right? After all, someone had to make sure no one was dead.

After a couple of minutes of such convincing, he finally dragged himself out of bed, lethargically wandering down the hallway wearing nothing but a pair of boxers. Almost as if on cue, he appeared in the door frame that lead to respawn, rubbing his eyes.

"The hell is going on in here?"

Finally, the backup generators coughed to life, and a dim light began to flicker through the overhead flourescents. The darkness fled from the room slowly, illuminating the shadowed person on the floor.

A smudged red unform, disheveled and cruddy, appeared worn on the man. But the man in question looked awful, with paled dark skin, a scruffy beard clearly resulting from a lack of shaving, and a thinned, calloused body. What may have been the most scary was the face, eyes wide open with hazed pupils and facial features twisted into a grotesque, horrified snarl. A lack of a distinct pulse would confirm the man, recognizable enough to be a Soldier, was quite clearly dead.

A loose tag on the battle-unready fatigues read:

As the lights blinked on, Kurt squinted, trying to help his eyes adjust as quickly as possible to the light. Okay, something was really wrong here, this guy wasn't--

This guy was DEAD.

"SHIT." Kurt jerked back, winding up falling to a sitting position before scrambling back up to his feet as quickly as possible. That was a teammate. That was a dead teammate that had respawned that way. He was in charge of keeping the base up and running, and now they had a dead guy on their hands because he hadn't done his job. The Engineer stared, looking very clearly horrified. What if he didn't respawn again? What if he was dead for real? The first thing to pop into his head was his old Soldier, the very same one that he'd found half out of that damn hallway--no, no, not going there again. He rubbed his eyes, taking another step back. Kurt had never really handled death well, even with respawn. He'd been told many times that that was one of the reasons why he himself wound up going through respawn so much, but he always brushed it off. And now here he was, staring down at a crumpled heap of dead Soldier where a live one should be. He clenched his free hand into a fist, shaking his head.

"I--heck." He really needed a drink right now.

"Whoa, whoa, hey!" With one hand grabbing pretty much uselessly at the floor, Connal reached back with his other, trying to get Jericho to let him go. "Damn it, Jer, if ya jus' wanted someone to come with you- oh, hi, Nik," the metalhead greeted, head tilted back to look up at the Medic.

Then the lights came back on all the way, and the Pyro's attention was once again pulled. Usually when people shout expletives, it means something is wrong. "Hey, that's Josif," was the first thing he noticed. Now even he could see something was up. "Why's he... Kurt, why's he not movin'...?"

Jericho whined, trying very hard to pull his Master with him away from the Wrong, when he backed into the Medic. Not expecting the doctor's presence, the chimera yelped, lurching forward a half-step and unintentionally head butting Connal.
He cursed under his breath, shaking his now aching skull before looking up at the big ol' Viking, ears drooping and eyes wide.
"It's bad. It's really bad."

Niklas was slightly less lethargic at Kurt and Jericho's panicking. He frowned. He hoped that something catastrophic wasn't happening with respawn. No one was hurt at least. "What happened?" he said, asking Connal, who seemed the calmest (oddly enough). "Did something unpleasant respaw--- whoa did you say Josif?!" He followed the Engineer's gaze to the opened capsule. Sure enough, there was the familiar form of the silhouette laying next to the opened capsule.

"Oh my god, Josif! I haven't seen him in months! I thought he was dead," he said excitedly, hurrying down the steps. It was only when he made it closer to the downed soldier and saw that frightening expression frozen on his face that he found that his initial assumption was correct. No breathing, pale skin, and pupils unresponsive to light. Furrowing his brow, he knelt down next to the body and pressed two fingers to the soldier's neck. No pulse and cold to the touch.

"He is dead," he said, casting a worried and somewhat puzzled glance up at Kurt.
