Buried Treasure [EVENT]

The big plot points that create pivotal developments all (eventually) wind up here, whether they like it or not.

Gerhard gestured towards 12, the bird-boy set up out of harm's way, but he didn't bother to speak up again as he moved to help Madison to safety, his tentacles flickering through a range of colors as he glanced back towards the water, a shudder going through his body at seeing something inhumanly large flail up out of the muddy water before splashing down again.
James and Josif would most assuredly be killed by that thing...
He swallowed, looking up to the lady Heavy.
"I- I'll see was I can do."

Once he was certain Madison and 12 were safe on the high point of the small island, the TentaMedic quickly took stock of the situation, tentacles twisting and undulating nervously before he nodded sharply to himself.
And dove into the water opposite the fight.

oh my gaaawd you guiiiiiiiise post so fast

Well. At least the Heavy had gotten away, and judging from how bloodied the water had become, she definately managed to pop it one on the head something fierce. Here he was being useless as the usual, but at the least nobody had died. Yet. Nobody else would be stupid enough to wander out into the water...

...and then there was this asshole. Even through the murk he could see the Soldier's blood was boiling. And it must have been...he was trying to tussle with that fucking thing!

It was the manliest and dumbest thing he had seen all day.

And the slippery arsonist was about to do something pretty stupid himself. He was weaker, no doubt, then the enraged infantryman and the monster, but he was the stronger swimmer. In an effort to save his idiot team mate from being bitten in half, he grabbed Josif by the collar and started surging upward. Hopefully he'd manage to yank him out of his death grip with the creature.

An undignified squawk was his reaction to Gerhard suddenly picking him up, and he remained frozen where he'd been put until Madison reappeared. Still alive, though half-drowned and looking a bit worse for wear. He jerked forward, going still again when Gerhard moved the Heavy to what should be a safer spot. 12 had opened his mouth to say something when his less-waterlogged teammate dove into the water, leaving him gaping for a second.

"--THE HELL ARE YOU DOIN'." Oh. He hadn't thought he could get that loud. 12 didn't particularly care at the moment, instead glaring at the spot where he'd seen Gerhard go under. "God DAMMIT you are goin' to get yourself fuckin' KILLED." That was more cursing than he remembered ever saying. Maybe if he could take off, he could get high enough to see what was happening? He looked around almost frantically for any higher tree or something he could use, but the only usable things that wouldn't require getting wet and ruining his chances of getting into the air were not on this island. "SHIT." He dug his talons into the ground, gritting his teeth. Gerhard shouldn't even be moving, let alone going into the water. How had he just let that happen? The bird whirled around, returning to the high point of the island and burrowing into his feathers. Supposed to be a guard unit, and he couldn't even protect his teammates. His handler would probably have just deemed him a failure and filed to have him put down by now. He glanced over at Madison after a good bit of seething, exhaling sharply.

"...don't be a jerk and die right now, okay. That would suck."

GOTTA POST FAST

Madison allowed herself to be moved along to a safer spot, but when Gerhard turned back and dove into the water, she very nearly chased after him, only stopping at the water's edge. "Waaaait! Dat's not what I meant, stupid!"

Too late. He was already gone, and trying to yell brought on another coughing fit. All she could do now was spit out French expletives in between coughs. Now what? Her hat was floating half submerged in the water, and she fished it out with her foot, halfheartedly wringing it out before putting it back on her head. A futile gesture, really, as she was already soaked to her skin.

She looked over at 12, who was looking every bit as frustrated and scared as she felt. "Don' worry, little buddy," she croaked. "I ain't gonna die, but I can't say de same for de rest of dem." At least she had managed to do some measure of damage, and James and Gerhard were adapted for the water, but Josif was a sitting duck. The thing had managed to drag her under like a ragdoll, and they all weighed less than she did, not to mention those terrible, crushing jaws. At least they would respawn, she guessed. She rubbed her temples, at a loss for what to do. "Any ideas?"

Despite appearances, the TentaMedic hadn't actually lost his mind.
Sure, he was stressing and more than a little frazzled, but even he knew jumping into a fight at this stage of the game was a horrible idea. His dive into the water was opposite the fight, allowing him to zip off through the water, still able to swim since only one tentacle had been harmed. He swam as fast as he was able, scrambling up onto the dock and 'running' into the BLU base and making a beeline for the Resupply.

Weapon, weapon, he needed a weapon-!

Some fumbling and cursing over his water-slickened grasp, and the Medic came charging out of the base quite literally armed to the teeth, his uniform utility belt slung around his waist and hung with a bone saw on each hip, a borrowed kukri slapped across his back and a crossbow braced on one shoulder, a quiver of bolts jammed into his belt.

He scrambled to find a good spot, fumbling to get his glasses on in the same motion as he took aim.
God, it was so hard to see through all this silt and mud-!
Gerhard inhaled a deep shaking breath, his gill silts flaring as he swiped water from his eyes.
"Herr Gott führe mich..."
With that mumbled prayer, the doctor let fly, reloading the moment he was able to recover from the crossbow's backlash.

"Uh, well--if I could get somewhere high enough, I could get into the air and see what's going on out there. Thing is, the good stuff for that's all back over there, and if I try swimmin', there's no way I'm gonna take off. Y'ever seen what happens when you drop a bird in water, 'specially when they're this feathery? Not fun." He snorted, shaking his head. "There's no way I'm gettin' in the water with that thing around, though. Easily breakable far's bones're concerned, and if it can mess a skeleton up like that, yyyyeah no." The creature had also apparently had a quite easy time of hauling their resident Heavy off, and that just made it all the more clear that he didn't want to tangle with it. 12 cast one more scathing look at the water, wondering just how long those two could stay under there. James probably could last longer, but Josif? That was doubtful. Something had to come up soon...unless they were already dead.

"What are we even supposed to do? I know this place has some pretty obvious problems and all, but you'd think they'd say somethin' about giant people-eatin' tentacle monsters in the damn swamp. That might turn up in briefin', you'd think." In one corner of his mind, he was surprised he was talking this much. Was it normally this easy to do this? It was kind of terrible that the only time he could actually get words together that made sense was when they were being attacked. Well, didn't that just figure.

He'd moved just in time to see the arrow fly into the water, and the look on his face was priceless.

Having kicked away two different swamp things (one being an arsonist) and having his patella split open with an arrow from god-knows-where, Josif finally surfaced for air, breathing heavily. He coughed ferociously, upchucking various fluids including blood, his and others'. Josif's war streak had been quelled forcefully, for the most part, and he now realized how badly he was wounded, especially with the stray bolt in his leg. But he was still angry.

"ALRIGHT, SMARTASS," Josif choked out, voice rasped. "Lotta GODDAMN nerve to shoot me in the knee. Can't you see I'm trying to- " Josif was interrupted by another coughing streak, this time most of the blood coughed up being his. But the Medic had some weapons, at least. He swam towards land as best he could with only one leg and a half-broken arm. "Toss me... the knife," Josif rasped, reaching out his good arm to catch the kukri. Josif was totally bonkers at this point to even think of still fighting, but at least he knew he was losing.

You are so fucking dead, Josif's sane mind said before the Soldier dove again.

Gerhard cringed upon seeing where his hastily aimed arrow had hit, but he didn't let that stop him from taking aim again. Josif was injured and would very likely be going through a very painful and well deserved Respawn once the monster got over its shock to refocus its efforts on tearing apart the Soldier.
There was no time to save the infantryman, no matter how much he wanted to.

The TentaMedic tossed the kukri to the dead man, a tentacle each grabbing for the saws on his belt while a few more dove into a pouch and grabbed out a handful of scalpels as he steadied his aim. Patience, patience...

There was an almighty splash as a positively monolithic crocodillian tail broke the water's surface, slapping down with an echoing crack that had more of the monster heaving into view. Algae and other slimy plant matter clung to a seemingly rocky surface, rough and chipped, then there was a head. A heavy beak large enough wrap around and bite off a Heavy's arm, beady black eyes peering out from craggy scaled skin.
Gerhard just about swallowed his own tongue as he realized just what this monster was, a rush of bright color flickering over his tentacles.

That had to be the largest alligator snapping turtle in all existence...

Inhaling a breath to steady his nerves, the TentaMedic took aim once more, fighting to keep steady as he attempted to put a bolt through the only weak spot he could see; it's eye.

This time, the arrow was spot on: it pierced the fierce creature's left eye, briefly blinding it and spilling bits of blood and eyeball into the water. Seizing the kukri, adrenaline still fully pumped, Josif dove down again and took the opportunity to strike while the fiend was in pain. With his temporarily-incredible strength, he squeezed the creature's maw shut and cleaved into the flesh above the pierced eye. The kukri stuck fast, larger portion of the blade wedged into it's head.

With a screech of pain and an almighty heave, the creature broke free of Josif's clamp and fled into deeper waters. Thrust back from the impact, Josif chose not to pursue it, rather hoping to get onto shore. Swimming as best he could, the Soldier washed up on the silty beach with a now definite air of weariness about him. All the pain he'd been put through now flooded his nerves, and he very nearly blacked out, facedown in the surf. But with still a fraction of strength left, the Soldier lifted his head and said, weakly, "I... I... think I... got it..."

Just to prove him wrong, karma sent the monster back for one final lunge at Josif. It leaped onto the Soldier's back, and with its beak, latched around his human throat. Josif gave an eventually garbled yell of terror as the blood vessels in his neck were torn open, spilling his life fluid onto the beach.

Then, for the second time since arriving, Josif died.

[Sorry for the rushed events, I had this part planned and wanted to get it over with.]

{Before arguments of possible God-modding, it's easier to close and hold close the mouth of any reptile than it is to open then due to the way the muscles are formed. It works for turtles, snakes, crocodiles, you name it, it'll work. Josif would be fully capable of heaving this monster's mouth shut once he got a good enough grip. Just wanted to add a little FYI. -Gerhard}

[No trouble, Josif, it's good to finally get the ball rolling on this thread again.
On another note, if I'm overstepping any bounds here, please let me know.]

Madison had been utterly powerless as the events unfolded before her. From Gerhard showing up with a small arsenal, to an obviously injured Josif surfacing after the Medic fired one of his bolts into the water, to the wounded man asking for the kukri, she could only sit by and watch. She had considered telling Josif to get out of the water, but didn't, knowing he wasn't going to listen at this point. At least they could respawn, and Gerhard and James at least stood a chance...

Still, being stuck on land was incredibly frustrating. When a severely wounded Josif crawled up onto the shore, she rushed to him, hoping to pull him away onto dry land. The monster, however, had other ideas, and leapt out of the water just before she got within arm's reach. She watched in abject horror as the creature tore out the Soldier's throat a horrible gurgle rising from the wound, only raising her hands quickly enough to shield herself from the spurting blood.

She had to act fast. The monster wasn't doing well, and was moving much more slowly, but it was still angry enough to do damage. Against her better judgement, and trying not to look at Josif's mutilated corpse, she grabbed the kukri lodged in its head and pulled. The creature bellowed in pain as she pulled it free, the sound sending a chill down her spine. She got a good couple of hits in, bringing more cries of pain, before one of the same appendages that had dragged her underwater lashed out and struck her across the forehead. The blow was weaker than before, but it still knocked her to her hands and knees. Blood flowed from the fresh wound into her eyes. She felt dizzy and sick, like she was going to pass out. She had managed to hang on to the kukri, but it probably wasn't much good if she couldn't see what she was doing.

All she could do was hope for another crossbow bolt to find its way into the creature's head. "Shoot 'em, Gerhard! Shoot 'em!"

Struck into speechlessness by the Soldier sudden gruesome demise, it took the Heavy's shout to bring the Medic out of his stunned stupor.
"Jawhol!"
Three bolts in quick succession, interspersed with a volley of scalpels thrown like particularly sharp darts, and the doctor leapt from the bridge into the water, his tentacles keeping his upper half enough above the water line to keep firing as he swam towards the island to help his teammates.

The monster's agonized roars made the water tremble and jump, shaking pieces off the muddy little island. Its face was beginning to resemble a particularly unpleasant looking pincushion, scalpels and crossbow bolts sticking into its craggy skin like so many over large needles. A lucky throw got a scalpel in the creature's uninjured eye, and it flailed, thrashing blindly to try and find its way.
A heavy paw slammed down upon the more solid earth of the small island, talons digging into the muck, and the monster turned, blood streaming from its nostrils as it tried to get the other paw on land, struggling to find some kind of retreat.

Gerhard hissed, colors flashing warningly across his skin as one of his more obedient tentacles grabbed up a saw from his belt, crossbow still braced against his shoulder as he sidled up beside Madison. She would find herself heaved to her feet by a number of the doctor's prehensile lower limbs, one in particular looping protectively around her waist and pushing her behind him.
The appendage that had smashed across her face, some strange amalgam of a tentacle and a secondary sort of tail covered in spikes and slime, was lopped off as it attempted to strike out again.

The monster cried out, shoving itself away from the island and leaving the Soldier's corpse to float in the muddy blood-colored water.
"Vhy- Von't- You- DIE?!"
The doctor's words were punctuated by precise near-point blank shots from his crossbow, the creature roaring in pain from each new injury as Gerhard did his damndest to kill the thing that had hurt his companions.

Backing up hadn't been the smartest idea, really. It had seemed like it at the time, what with all the arrows and scalpels flying around. Not to mention the giant goddamn turtle monster trying to get up on the island. The shaking was beginning to do a number on the island, and 12 had unknowingly stepped onto a patch slated for heading back into the water. He fell in quite unceremoniously, again perfectly still for a split second when Josif's body floated by, setting off a good bit of thrashing until he was at least somewhat away from the dead Soldier. Way to go, bird. While everybody else was actually doing something useful, you fell off the damn island. He felt a little better when he was at least partially out of the water again, feathers dripping wet and clinging to him in places. Gerhard certainly was shooting that thing a lot--how wasn't it dead yet? The sounds it made were absolutely ungodly, and that, coupled with its appearance, definitely led him to believe that somebody had been messing around with this thing. Either that, or the swamp just spontaneously spat out monsters. That, he could also believe.

The creature shoving itself away from the island unsteadied him again, though this time he managed to stay upright. Just what kind of creature could take this much damage and still be moving that much? It had to be almost dead, though--well, hopefully, anyway. He didn't really see it lasting long with that many open wounds, a missing appendage, and no eyes. If there was a way to get inbetween Gerhard's shots, maybe his own talons could help?

Madison's call for help was answered, much to her relief. Though she couldn't see him, she heard him approach, and she heard the monster's cries of pain. She was helped to her feet by Gerhard's surprisingly strong tentacles, and allowed herself to be pushed back a bit to pull herself together. Wiping the blood from her eyes, she saw that the Medic had taken it upon himself to fight the monster alone. "Oh no you don't." Her head was ringing, and she still felt dizzy and sick, but she could worry about that later. "I ain't done jus' yet."

A little unsteady, but determined, she gripped the kukri harder and stepped around to the other side of the monster, away from Gerhard's crossbow bolts. She was a frightening sight, her face and neck covered in fresh blood, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear, anger, and determination. She swung again and again at the creature, its movement growing slower and slower, its cries growing lower and lower. They were winning. They were almost there, all they needed was a little more...

Pyro, return!

...and a little more they would receive.

Having taken a boot to the face from Josif had sent him spiraling into the murky water in a daze, leaving his face split down the center for his trouble too. After spending a few minutes seeing stars, he had spotted a familiar rusty twist of metal in the mud of the deep water...

The slippery arsonist emerged from the water like a shot, a length of barbed wire between his bleeding hands. He slipped over the horrible thing's shell, straddling the retreating monster's back. The mutant turtle swung its head around, snapping at the salamander on its back, giving him the perfect opportunity.

He slipped the tightened barbed wired around its neck like a garrote, pulling backwards with all the strength he had left. Blood started to well up on the monster's thickened skin, and the beast started to weaken even further.

The great animal thrashed, bleeding profusely from its many wounds as it tried to buck off the salamander, providing a perfect opening for the Heavy's kukri at the same time the Medic let off another volley of sharp projectiles. All of this on top of the punishment it had taken at the hands of rampaging Soldier, and the damage really began to take its toll.
Wailing in a manner that sounded disturbingly similar to a grieving human, the mutant turtle's head crashed down upon the island's bank, blood pooling in the mud.
One last bubbling breath, red foam dribbling from the creature's nostrils, and the massive beast began to convulse and jerk in its final death throes.

Gerhard nocked another bolt, half expecting the thing to heave itself up for another go, tentacles poised to dart out and grab his companions to safety at the slightest hint of danger. He could barely believe it when the massive creature finally fell still, floating for a few moments before it began to slide off the bank and sink into the swamp.

As the giant snapping turtle's head fell for the last time, it caused the barbed wire to run through the salamander's hands, slicing up the amphibian's tender flesh further. Stupid, stupid idea to begin with.

He didn't need to be told twice to get off the goddamn thing. James didn't so much as jump off the turtle as he fell off, landing on the now very bloody and muddy bank with a wet smack. He scrambled for higher ground, panting. It seemed a copious amount of his own blood was now mixing with the various kinds of gore accumulated on the small island, but it hardly mattered...the BLUs were safe and...

...Josif was dead again. Oh boy. Not a big surprise though.

What we accomplished here was no small feet, ladies (gentlemens?). Snapping turtles are notoriously hard to kill. Graphic case in point

Holy shit that is absolutely terrifying.

The Medic was moving the moment the salamander flopped onto land, slinging his crossbow over his shoulder to free up his hands so he could help the other hybrid up, uncaring of the toxin covering the man's skin as he quickly herded the injured up towards the high point of the island.
Just in case.

Madison dropped the kukri with a heavy sigh once the beast finally laid down and died. The adrenaline was fading from her system, and the pain of her head injury and her little swim was finally catching up to her. Her face was covered in blood, and she wasn't feeling very steady. With blurry vision, she inspected the damage to her companions. James was hurt, but he didn't seem too bad, and Gerhard was faring well for someone who had lost a good portion of their limb. 12 looked unhurt, and Josif...

There was no need to look at Josif. She had watched him die, and really didn't want to look at the gaping wound on his throat. She couldn't say she didn't see it coming, but they probably couldn'tve done it without his suicidal charge into the water.

She followed Gerhard's command gratefully, taking a seat next to James on dry land. When she spoke again, her voice was little more than a scratchy, shaky whisper. "Don' overexert yourself, you're hurt as well." Not as much as she was, but it was no good if the medic couldn't do his job. "I don' t'ink I'll die, but just in case I do, de chip is in my pocket."

Gerhard huffed, eyes narrowing a moment before he shook his head.
"You von't die. I von't let you. Zhat's mein job."
He glanced over towards 12, doing a double take at seeing the avian Scout looking very much like a drowned rat with his soaking wet feathers dripping everywhere, but the boy didn't seem to be injured, so he returned his attention to those that needed it most. Realizing that his hands and arms were starting to tingle, he quickly darted to the water and rinsed off as much of the Pyro's toxin as he could before scrambling back over to his charges, sharp eyes determining who needed the most help.

Madison had a head wound, but it was shallow despite how much it bled, though she seemed lethargic, so she could have further damage internally that he couldn't determine. James' hands were shredded from the barbed wire and he appeared to have a bloody nose, but he otherwise seemed alright.

Nodding sharply to himself, he dug through the pouches of his utility belt, snapping on a pair of disposable gloves and grabbing up some gauze along with a small packaged cleaning cloth. He treated the Heavy first, swiping her head wound clean and placing a patch of gauze to staunch the bleeding, bandaging it on firmly to keep it in place before turning to the Pyro. The injuries to the salamander's palms were gruesome in appearance, but with a closer look, they weren't as bad as he'd thought they were. James would still need stitches, though. In the meantime, he cleaned and padded them with gauze, wrapping them immobile.
He ignored his own injury, the severed limb curled up tight against his hip with the stump curled between another loop of muscle acting as a tourniquet. It had already begun to scab over.

"Alright, zhat should vork for now, but you bozh vill need stitches. 12, I need you to escort James, Madison needs somevone to lean on. Ve're going to mein Infirmary. No arguments."

"Y--Yeah, I can do that." 12 trudged out of the water now, hovering around Madison and looking more than a bit worried at how she sounded. He'd been assigned to the remaining RED, though; not much he could do about that. The other hybrid looked a bit worse for wear, and 12 cringed at the glimpse he got of James's injured hands before they were bandaged up. Where had he even found the barbed wire? Probably somewhere way down at the bottom of the swamp, and that was somewhere this bird had no intention of ever going. There was no doubt that that had been painful, but it had been the last bit they'd needed to kill the thing--though 12 wasn't ready to call it dead just yet. The wail had been creepy as hell, and he hadn't thought that it could make a noise like that. Considering its previous range of noises, it wasn't really out of the question, was it? He shook his head, frowning when his hair covered an eye. He reached up and swept it away as quickly as possible, trying his best to not accidentally bash one of the injured with his wing while doing so. Casting Madison one more uncomfortable glance, he moved over to where James was, watching the Pyro carefully. He'd just about earned himself okay status after that stunt, but he was still a RED. He wasn't quite out of the metaphorical woods yet.
