Buried Treasure [EVENT]

The big plot points that create pivotal developments all (eventually) wind up here, whether they like it or not.

Gerhard made to respond, but the salamander interjected first. Rather than being annoyed, he simply shook his head and moved deeper into the water until he was up to his hips.
About to dive, he paused, then looked over to the land/tree-bound trio.
"Keep ein eye on each ozzer at all times. We haff lost too many already."
With that, he was off, a shimmer of blue and white quickly lost in the silt as he jetted under the salamander and swept off towards the island, not needing to surface with his gills.

He was already waiting on the island by the time the rest arrived, his posture tense and his expression blank as he stared at the partially excavated skeleton that lay buried in the silty bottom. The bones were old, yellowed and worn and brittle...
Frowning slightly, he dove and swam down to the skeleton, focusing on the small vertebrae that made up the neck, and gently began to investigate with his claws.
It didn't take him long to find what he was looking for-
A tiny BLU colored chip, no bigger than the end of his thumb and wafer thing, tucked in between the fifth and sixth vertebrae.

He came back to the surface, brow furrowed as he looked over the old chip that didn't look more than a few days old, protected by the skeleton of the person it had been made for.
"Vone of ours, it seems."

Josif walked onto the island, looking at where the tentacled Medic was investigating. There was, in fact, a skeleton here, mostly buried in the earth. The Soldier moved to glance over the Medic's shoulder, observing his work. When the Medic removed the chip from the skeleton's neck, Josif raised an eyebrow. "Odd. Skeleton's been here quite a while, but that's still there?" the infantryman noted. And it was just one of BLU team, so how many more met this same fate?

"Regardless, let's be careful. The bones won't be too strong now," Josif said again, slowly pushing his shovel into the silted ground beside the washed bones. Hopefully the Medic could observe these remains better in one piece, see how long's it's been dead; and hopefully tell what killed it.

Madison halted her exploration once Josif had walked over to see what Gerhard was investigating, not noticing it immediately. She followed behind, curious to see what he had unearthed, though she wasn't too thrilled at the prospect of digging up bodies. She was just as surprised as the Soldier to see the Respawn chip in such good condition.

"Well, bodies decompose faster in a warm, wet environment like dis," she said, responding to Josif's remark, "So it would make sense dat de body would be mostly wit'out flesh, especially if its in de water, where plenty of critters can feed off it." She leaned in closer, taking another look at the little blue object. "Still, dat seems t' be in excellent condition compared t' de state of de bones. It ain't even rusted or not'in'."

She stuck one of the shovels in the ground a few feet away for someone else to take, and took one for herself. "I'm not exactly sure where t' begin, since it's hard t' gauge where de bones are goin' t' be." She put the spade into the mud upside-down, pulling some of the earth towards her, trying to create a perimeter of sorts.

"Well, the head was stickin' out of the bank..." the slippery arsonist had dragged himself out of the water while the BLUs and the Soldier were talking. He padded to the water's edge, then took a few paces backward. "What's the length of a body then..? Like six feet from the water line would be where the feet would be. Max." he shrugged helplessly. "But I'm no goddamn anthropologist."

A long dead BLU...with a chip in its neck that looked brand new. Curiouser and curiouser. This place was becoming more of a fucking freak show by the minute.

Carefully shoveling away packs of slit and mud, Josif said, "Well, let's start digging around where the body should be and worry about the bones in the dirt a little later." He paused to scrape some loose earth off of his hand, groaning. This shovel wasn't quite the kind for digging up corpses, but Josif had to bear with it. There was only enough big shovels for those who agreed to come, and he wasn't one of them.

Then he noticed something, oddly enough. Josif leaned down to touch the skeleton gingerly, fingering where there appeared to be some breaks in the shoulder blades. "Hey, what could've caused this? Not very many long falls in a swamp like this..."

The TentaMedic frowned, handing the chip over to Madison for safe keeping before moving to help excavate the rest of the body, his tentacles slithering through the mud like so many snakes as he tried to feel out where the bones could be lying under the tamped down silt. He glanced up at hearing the Soldier speak up about falling, and sidled over to see what the man was looking at.
A brow quirked curiously as he leaned down to look closer, claws scraping lightly along the break.
"It looks like... A bite of some kind. Look-"
He shuffled back a little, pointing as a tentacle moved in to shift the break into better view.
"Zhere ist a definite arc of dentation zhere, somezhing large bit down hard enough to break zhe bone..."

Madison held onto the chip as instructed and continued helping with the dig. Once their quarry was free of the mud, she observed the bones quietly as her companions discussed it.

It looked like a bite. "A gator, maybe?" she volunteered. "Dey certainly have enough strength t' break de bones. But even so, dey usually make a mess of t'ings when dey feed. Dis skeleton is mostly intact."

"But what I want t' know, is why didn't dey jus' respawn, especially wit' de chip in such good condition?"

Josif looked at the skeleton more closely. Now that the Tenta-Medic explained, it did look somewhat like a bite, with the question being just what bit the victim without breaking anything else. It was hard to tell, without the flesh.

"Sounds like BLU's Respawn is having problems, too," Josif commented in reply to the Heavy's question. "All the more reason to fix the blasted machines, I guess." RED's Respawn had been working fine when the resurrected Josif and the other two after the Incident, but apparently that was still too slow. So what was the problem when the machine only recently coughs up an old Soldier from last September? Damn, they needed an Engineer, one who could fix this place...

"Still, it must've been a pretty powerful thi-" Wait, what was that? Josif had just barely seen a ripple in the water, the outline of a dark shape barely showing beneath the mire's surface. "Hold that thought," Josif said quietly, dirty shovel up at the ready. "Something's out there..."

"Zhat ist true, but don't zhey have longer snouts? Zhis ist... Short und very stout, looks like..."
The doctor (once veterinarian) squinted, leaning in even closer to try and get a better look without his glasses.
"Actually, it looks almost like a beak of some kind. Zhere ist a point here in zhe front of the bite vhere it punctures very deep."
He scraped at the spot with a claw, jerking back when the bone crackled and split under his touch, especially weak around the puncture.
"Very strong bite..."

Hearing the Soldier speak up, Gerhard glanced over to see what was the matter. The shape didn't register at first, the TentaMedic having gotten used to seeing the salamander Pyro paddling around and thus ignoring the dark shape, but then he felt a particular tension tug on the air and shifted to really look and see what was going on.
"Was ist-?"
He broke off with a pained shriek, the sound pitched up an octave that should not have been possible for a man his age as he grabbed onto the nearest solid object/person and jerked all of his tentacles towards him, out of the water.
One was missing a good 3 feet off the end, bleeding profusely.

At first, he hadn't quite seen it, thinking that the dark shape might have just been a log or something. The noise Gerhad made and the sudden tentacle bleeding everywhere was more than enough to make him reassess that assumption. Whatever it was, it was still hanging around as far as he could tell, and having anybody else lose anything to this mystery swamp monster wasn't on the agenda for today.

"Get out of the water, it's still there--!" he shouted, definitely feeling useless right now. If that thing could take out that much of Gerhard on the first try, what could it do to someone else? That wasn't something he wanted to find out. 12 knew that if he got into the water, he'd be a sitting duck; getting eaten by some abomination in the silt was not how one helped teammates avoid said monster. That didn't make it feel any better, really. He swallowed, moving out as close as he could via tree branches, feathers ruffled and heart pounding. If there was ever a Not Good thing he could imagine happening out here, this was one he hadn't figured would. It didn't feel right just sitting safe up here while his teammates were in danger, especially not when one of them was wounded. But what was he supposed to do?

"Ah, SHIT!" Josif cursed, a sudden bout of battle attitude overcoming him. He quickly slammed into the Medic, shoving the man[-octopus] away from the water. Forget whatever bit Mr. Bones here- this one was killer! The Soldier let over the skeleton, stepping into the shallows while keeping a distance from the monster. Flipping the Gardener to the pick position, Josif barked out, "James, come on! I'll need more strength for this!" And your axe, too; mining tools aren't THAT lethal...

Then the dark shape lunged through the water again. No time for the arsonist, think fast! The creature leapt from the water at Josif's midsection, mouth gaping open for a fierce bite.

In an instant, Josif sidestepped the attack, countering with a blunt pick to what was hopefully the creature's head. As momentum carried it on, a claw Josif failed to noticed slashed at his hip. The Soldier had barely whirled around in suprise before the swamp thing had darted into the water again. There was no wound, but some cloth from his fatigues and a belt pouch was absent, presumably stolen by the monster.

Everything in this god-forsaken place was trying to kill them, and keep them dead, too.

Caught completely off guard by the sudden amputation of one of his lower limbs, it took the Medic a moment to catch onto what all was going on, realizing first things first that A) He was in need of medical attention, B) Josif had pushed him out of harm's way, and C) there was a huge nasty monster thing trying to eat his friends.
Gerhard lurched up, glancing around quick to take stock on the situation, noting where 12 and Madison were in relation to himself before catching sight of James. Right next to the water. With the monster in it.
He acted on instinct, tentacles whipping out with startling speed to snatch the salamander out of harm's way as the creature attacking them came around for another go. There was something that looked vaguely like a turtle's beak, large and menacing and full of barbs for holding fish, but it was huge, large enough to consume a human head whole, and he felt his hearts skip when he realized just how fast it was moving through the water.
A tentacle lashed out before he could consciously command it, the prehensile limb wrapping around the RED Soldier's arm and tugging him towards the safety of high ground while another appendage jetted out to grab at Madison's belt.
They needed to get away from the water, all of them, NOW.

Madison barely had time to register what was happening before Gerhard's terrifying shriek. Her stomach dropped when she saw what had happened to his limb. It looked like they had found their culprit, and that was no gator...

She growled in frustration as the Thing engaged Josif before disappearing back into the murky waters. He needed strength, and that was one thing she was good at. Luckily for him, he wasn't hurt. The opportunity lost, she turned her attention back to her wounded teammate. "12, help me get him out of de water, and den I'll he---"

She didn't finish her sentence. One of the creature's appendages grabbed her by the belt and jerked her backwards, where she hit the water with a yelp and a loud splash. She couldn't see, she couldn't breathe, and it was dragging her down into deeper waters. What was that? It didn't look like anything she'd ever seen before, but now wasn't exactly the time to wonder about such things. She had managed to hold onto her shovel, and was swinging wildly at the creature with all of her strength. She felt her improvised weapon hitting something, but she wasn't sure how much damage she was doing, at this point more concerned with getting her head above the water.

(someone suggested this happen in the chat. Do not blame me. Pyro away!)

Shit. Shit shit shit shit SHIT. Well. This had gone completely to hell in a hand basket. At the least, they had their cause of death...and it appeared Madison was going to demonstrate it brilliantly. Without even thinking, the salamander wriggled out of Gerhard's tentacle, plunging into the depths after the BLU.

There was no chance he could pull her out of the creature's grip, not with those spindly little limbs. Fucking useless. As usual. There was still one thing a creature on his tier of the food chain could do. Maybe he could distract it...

Ugly son of a bitch, why don't you pick on someone in your own goddamn ecosystem? he flicked his tail at the thing's face in the murky depths, taunting it. He swam around the monster, hoping it would forget about the hapless Heavy and concentrate on him instead.

Trying to comprehend the blur of color and fang that had grazed him, Josif heard a loud splash and heavy struggling noises to his right (facing away from the water). He tried to look for the source, but was interrupted a slithering appendage pulling him away from the frothing disturbance. The Soldier could barely see the BLU Heavy struggling against the monster's grasp.

Josif didn't resist the pulling. His mind was shifted elsewhere: a horrible memory arising from his tainted past. Whether or not it was an illusion of his accursed alternate self Josif couldn't tell. He simply stood there, eyes blank and staring into space, pick-shovel held flimsily in his hand....

Then his pupils narrowed, and eyes shot to a blood-red hue as a feral instinct was injected into his war instinct. "Let me GO!" Josif screamed as he tore the Medic's tentacle off of him with ease of an inhuman strength. Pick clasped so tightly it made knuckles white, the Soldier made a [literally] mad dash for the creature dominating Madison in the pitch-black water.

And despite all that Josif had spilled to James back in the clearing, the slippery arsonist would later be convinced that the infantryman was still raving crazy.

12 knew that he would be useless in the water. As much as he wanted to help, going down to fight the creature with the REDs was not the way to do it; Gerhard was still there, and the hybrid really doubted he'd stopped bleeding yet. He pushed off from his branch, spreading his wings and gliding over to the island. He could see them in the water, and it was like staring at a train wreck. He tore his eyes away after a painfully long moment, turning back to the Medic and trying not to panic. Gerhard's injured appendage was pretty obvious, and he bit his lip, already trying to tear some strips off his shirt for bandages. "I'm sorry I'm not really good at water stuff because I really want to help right now but I ca--can't do that, s-so I'm just goin' to try fixin' you up. Okay? Okay." he stammered, words practically spilling out at a ridiculous pace. The Scout wasn't a pro at first aid, but he knew for sure that the bleeding had to be stopped. It would be much easier to keep calm if that was the only thing on his mind, and 12 made an honest effort at clearing everything else out. The occasional worried glances towards the water indicated that he wasn't quite successful, and he swallowed, taking a deep breath before jerking the first strip off the edge of his shirt.

"We gotta patch you up. Please don't bite me or nothin', not sayin' you will but you're hurt and everything is really fucked up and nobody knows what to do so. I--I'm not lettin' you go in there, 'cause you're bleedin' and that thing might just focus on you and I don't want you to die." That burst of words was a hit easier to understand, but it was still shaky, and he cursed under his breath at how scared he sounded. Stupid weak useless bird, can't even keep it together when everything exploded. He shook that off for now, instead crouching down and doing his best to secure the first bandage to Gerhard's wounded tentacle. It wasn't exactly going as well as he'd hoped, but at least he was trying.

There was blood in the water.

It wasn't hers, that much Madison's oxygen-deprived brain could figure out. Her constant flailing seemed to be working, at least a little bit. She could hear deep, guttural groans coming from the creature, strange, unearthly noises that no animal had any right making. But her swings were growing weaker, until finally she lost her grip on the shovel and it sank down below. She couldn't say that she'd thought about what drowning would be like, but she didn't think that it would hurt. It was a pain unlike anything she'd experienced, a pain from the inside, her lungs burning with the desire for oxygen, and the unpleasant sensation of water filling up her mouth and nose, and beginning to work its way down her windpipe.

She was just about to give up and allow herself to succumb to unconsciousness when suddenly the monster released its grip on her. Air. She needed air! With her remaining strength, she frantically swam away. Oh god, which way was up? She spun in circles until she glimpsed a patch of light, and swam toward it. Her face broke the surface, but she was dismayed to find she still couldn't breathe. With a last burst of adrenaline, she staggered onto the muddy shore and collapsed on all fours, coughing up water.

In any other situation the sensation would be unpleasant, but now, it was welcome. Anything to get rid of the water that was keeping her from breathing. She hacked and retched for what seemed like an eternity before finally collapsing onto the ground and inhaling. She had never experienced such a wonderful sensation as that first breath of air. She was completely oblivious to the world around her, lost in the sensation of fresh oxygen. She had never been so grateful for the ability to breathe as she was at this moment.

Joisf had barely even noticed the Heavy he was trying to save had not moments ago dragged herself onto the shore. There were larger issues at hand: kill that thing before it made another skeleton out of anyone. He dove into the murky, filthy water, pick in hand, searching at large for the creature. Josif thought he spotted it, until the slim, rough figure of the things revealed it to be James.

Snorting inwardly, he swam lower, the blood in the water stinging his bloodshot eyes. After stopping a brief moment, a large shape came into view. Or rather, it came out of hiding and lunged right at the Soldier. Josif grabbed the attacking creature's gaping maw, twisting it with both of his arms. The pick-shovel he had carried with him had been discarded in favor of brute strength.

The two figures wrestled, each aiming to out-power the other, claws and nails scratching and piercing into skin. Despite Josif's clear disadvantage in heavy clothing and boots, he was faring much like the monster he was so desperately trying to kill. It was all unseen, deep beneath the surface of the water.

And meanwhile, back on the island, someone saw a battered, dirty pick-shovel wash up, spade forced into the silt by the heavy ripples from below.

The TentaMedic barely seemed to register the bird-Scout's presence, far too focused on the sudden disappearance of both the salamander and the Heavy, his pupils thin slits as his skin flickered and changed color, the blue of his tentacles dulling to a muddy brown-ish color in his worry. He yelped when the Soldier pulled away, coming to himself for a moment before going back to casting about frantically, looking for the RED Pyro and Madison, forgetting how bad his eyesight was on dry land. All he could see were smears of color and movement...

He jerked to attention at feeling something being wrapped around his injured limb, stiffening for a split second for he recognized his avian teammate, giving the boy a short nod as he continued his search.
There were so few of them, he couldn't risk his friends-!
In an abrupt whirl of motion, the half-octopus turned, grabbing 12 and swiftly placing the young man upon the highest point of the island before turning back to the conflict, just about ready to leap in and join in the fray when a large blue-colored shape came heaving out of the water.
He was at Madison's side in a split second, already fretting.
"Are you alright? Was happened?!"

Madison was nigh unconscious from exhaustion, overcome by the relief from her new found ability to breathe. She didn't see when Gerhard approached, and it was only his voice that brought her back down to earth. She raised her head from the mud a bit and looked into his face, vision blurry.

"What'r--" she attempted to speak, but almost immediately began another coughing fit. When she finally stopped, her voice was hoarse scratchy, only a little louder than a whisper. "What're y' doin' movin' around so much? You're hurt pretty bad, probably worse den me..."

She wiped the water from her eyes and sputtered again. "De monster... it grabbed me and pulled me under... I t'ink I managed t' wound it at least 'cause I was hittin' it wit' de shovel, but I'm not sure how much. I dropped de shovel once I couldn't hit it no more..." She was hit with a wave of realization once she had spoken, and sat up quickly. The chip. She reached into her pocket and felt around frantically. With some effort she managed to find the little blue square. She sighed, not feeling very much relieved.

"Where are de ot'ers? Where's 12? And James and Josif?" Part of the question answered itself. She heard some splashing in the water nearby, and could just make out where James was swimming. Her eyes widened, and she turned back to Gerhard, visibly frightened. "Dey need t' get out of de water. Dat t'ing is dangerous, dey'll be killed..."
