Perhaps a Little Misunderstanding (Hannah)

Where the medical staff of the base tends to roam. There is an Office hidden in the very back past the Laboratory, where a small number of tanks sit and bubble quietly.

Perhaps a Little Misunderstanding (Hannah)

Postby Gerhard Melsbach » Tue Oct 04, 2011 10:05 pm

It had been one long, tiresome day that had started far too early, but when one's first appointment of the day was a decidedly rambunctious Soldier, it was best to simply let the forceful man have his way. And he did let the patients pick their own times...
Gerhard exhaled a soft sigh, setting aside his freshly-sanitized stethoscope on a little rolling trolley and pushing it back over to the gurney he'd been using for an exam table for most of the morning. There were more coming in, he knew that, but it was nearly lunch and he figured that anyone coming in would likely head off to eat anyway, so he was off the hook for at least thirsty minutes. Hopefully more, but likely less with his luck.

Rinsing off his hands for the umpteenth time that day, he straightened his coat and headed out the door, putting a small note up to say that he would be back shortly. A cup of tea and a sandwich would be nice right about now...

...and it at that exact moment that Hannah came running down the corridor. The appointment had completely gone over her head after her near-drowning down at the swamp, so it was only luck that she happened to pass the corkboard. A few wrong turns and deadends later, she was very certain that she was going to get in trouble with whoever the Head Medic was. Panicking, she turned around that last corner, only to slam right into another man in a lab coat.

"Ach!"
Gerhard very nearly unbalanced, not having seen the rushing figure until the last moment and thus totally unprepared for the collision, and he reacted automatically, tentacles shifting under the disguise to keep him from falling while his hands practically flew out to catch his 'assailant' around the shoulder so they wouldn't go tumbling either.
"Mein Gott, was-?! Oh. Allo."
Huh. It looked like there really was more than just Jane attempting to balance the gender gap.
A moment to make sure that the young woman was alright, and he released his grip upon her shoulder, taking a slight 'step' back.
"Vhere are you going in such a hurry?"

Hannah couldn't reply just yet; she was out of breath from running around the BLU base to search for the infirmary. A minute of deep breaths passed, before she could even respond to the tall man in front of her.

"I...I'm really...sorry...physical exami...examination...late...infirmary?" she asks weakly. Her legs are aching from her wild dash from one end of the base to other; she's not used to much physical activity. Tired, she unconsciously leaned in on him, depending on his arms to keep her up. It hadn't struck her yet that it was another Medic she was addressing, or she might've reacted even worse. For the moment though, the only thing she can concentrate on is to catch her breath and find the infirmary before she gets into even more trouble.

It took a moment for him to decipher the young lady's gasping reply, then voiced a soft 'oh' as he realized what she was going on about.
"It ist quvite alright, Fraulein, und you needn't vorry about zhe exam for zhe moment. Kommen Sie, let's get you sitting down before you fall down, ja?"
With a gentle firmness, Gerhard directed the young woman towards the nearby kitchen door, keeping his hands on her shoulder so she wouldn't stumble.
"You are lucky you caught me, I vas just going to get some lunch, und I have a feelingk you vould have been running around until you collapsed."

Hannah just nodded, too tired to do or to think anything else. She let herself be steered by him through the doors, willing to be guided by whoever this nice person was. She couldn't quite catch what he had just been saying to her; the blood was pumping in her ears and there was an ache building up within. She didn't even register that they were now in the kitchen; she was just too worried, upset and afraid that she was going to get in trouble for her tardiness.

"Will...will the Medic in charge...be a-angry at me?"

The question popped out of her before she could stop herself. The other person seemed nice though, so she wasn't too anxious that he was going to get mad at her. At least, she hoped he wouldn't get mad at her. Her head was still spinning slightly from lack of air, so she couldn't really think straight anymore.

"Vell, seeing as I seem to be zhe Head Medic und I'm not irritated, no, I don't zhink so."
A small smile twitched across the doctor's mouth, just enough to be visible as he escorted the currently breathless young woman (the Engineer, apparently, Hannah?) into the kitchen and got her sitting down upon one of the chairs someone had dragged in from the cafeteria so that the central counter space could be used as another table.
"Now, I vill get you some wasser, I'll get my lunch, und zhen ve can go to zhe Infirmary togezzer aftervards. Sound gute?"

Wait.

WHAT?

"You're...the Head Medic?"

She blinked. Well, at least he seemed like a nice guy, right? No need to panic, no need to freak out, you got this Hannah! Just count down from three, take deep breaths and relax. Just like what nice medic number one said, right? Three. Two. O-

After all, it's not like he's going to saw through your bones with a medical saw, or inject poison into your veins, or experiment on your DNA, or take out your skeleton for no good reason, or switch your heart with that of a monkey's.

"I AM SO SORRY!!! I DIDN'T MEAN TO MISS THE APPOINTMENT, IT'S JUST THAT I GOT LOST OUTSIDE, THEN I FELL INTO THE SWAMP SO I GOT WET, SO I HAD TO TAKE A SHOWER AND THEN I GOT LOST IN HERE, AND THEN I WASN'T LOOKING BECAUSE I WAS SO SCARED THAT I WAS GOING TO BE LATE, AND THEN, AND THEN...

PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!!!"

While the question was expected, the sudden outburst caught the Medic completely off guard, causing him to lurch back into the nearby counter and bonk his head on the overhanging cupboard, which had him disoriented enough to have him stumbling and slumping against the counter. Rubbing at the new lump forming upon his skull, Gerhard pulled himself upright, glad for his tentacles keeping him steady where two legs likely wouldn't have.
"Gute Gott im Himmel... Fraulein, was ins zhe vorld did I do to make you zhink I vould harm you?"
Determined not to make a further mess of things, the doctor went back to the task of getting beverages for himself and the female Engineer, glad he'd already started hot water for tea as he rummaged around for some kind of bread product. Needed bread to make a sandwich afterall.
"I don't know was you may have heard, but I am no boogey man out for your soul. I'm a doctor, vone of many physicians here on base. I just happen to be in zhe Infirmary mehr zhen most."
For various reasons...

"But...but I was late...aren't you a-angry? I-I made you wait sir."

She's genuinely very surprised that he hasn't even snapped at her yet. Eventhough she had only spent a few months at the research facility, she had learned quick enough what happens when you make a Medic wait for you, even for a few seconds. The last poor soul who had been unfortunate enough to anger one of the Medics in that way had never been seen again after the man had him dragged off by the guards.

Gerhard turned, regarding the young woman with a decidedly bewildered look over his shoulder before he shook his head and moved to get down a glass. As he filled it with water, he glanced over to the Engineer again, expression back to neutral.
"Fraulein, if I got angry at every little zhing, I vould have never been a very good pediatrician. Or veterinarian. I have learned to be a very patient person, it helps quvite a lot vhen zhings get stressful. Here."
He handed her the now-filled glass.
"Drink zhis, assume you are zhirsty after all zhat running, ja?"
A moment to make sure she wouldn't drop it, and he turned back to his own eatables, taking the steaming kettle off the stove and slowly pouring the very hot water over the teabag in his mug. Not the best tea, bitter and black, but it was mildly caffeinated and enough cream could fix anything. Setting the kettle back down, he wrinkled his nose at the rather strong smell of the brew, wondering if maybe it was apparent to the others on the team or if it was just him with his sharpened senses.
"Anyvay, you veren't zhat late, und you are my last appointment of zhe day, so it isn't a problem eizzer vay."
He paused a moment, frowning slightly at the half-made sandwich he was preparing while the tea steeped.
"Are you hungry? I am already making lunch for myself, it's only polite to ask."

"Umm...no thank you sir. I-I don't want to bother you."

She looked at the glass of water worriedly. Would he poison her with this? So far he seemed very nice and kind, but she's seen Medics who act all fatherly but who in fact are as sadistic and cruel as they come. But then again, he didn't describe himself as a Medic; he called himself a doctor, a pediatrician and a vet. He didn't seem to have the mad scientist bent that all the Medics she knew back at the facility had.

In the end, she just took a tiny sip. Just in case. If she doesn't start frothing in ten seconds, then maybe she'd drink more. For now though, she's not going to disturb the man in front of her as he makes lunch. "He might not like it if people disturb him in his work," she reasoned out.

Gerhard simply shrugged, turning back to finish spreading peanut butter on one of the pieces of bread he'd toasted.
"Mmm, suit yourself."
He quickly finished putting together his sandwich, half wrapping it in a paper towel and rinsing off the knife he'd used before moving to join the female Engineer at the table. Taking a sip from his tea, he pointedly ignored the way his hidden tentacles were coiling around the legs of the chair, still a little bit unnerved by the young woman's earlier outburst. Why had she done that...?
"So. You are Hannah, correct? Zhe new Engineer?"

"Ah! Y-yes sir!"

She quickly ducked her head downwards again, hoping he didn't notice how she had been watching him secretly. Her hands gripped the edge of the seat tightly. Eventhough he had treated her like a gentleman so far, she was still afraid of him and what he could potentially do to her. She knew Medics liked it when you were subservient to them and treated them with respect though, so she kept her head bowed down respectfully and reminded herself to speak only when spoken to.

A thin brow quirked at the young woman's stuttering formality, and the Medic couldn't help but wonder if there was something going on here that he wasn't picking up on. His nostrils flared on instinct, and that quirked brow rose up even further at the sharp scent of fear that spiked through his senses. She was scared? Of what?
He glanced quickly down to his 'legs', exhaling a mental sigh of relief at seeing the holographic disguise still in place, but that still left the question...
Sitting up a bit straighter, Gerhard turned in his chair before leaning down a bit to be more level with the Engineer, a gloved hand coming up to rest gently on her shoulder in a hopefully comforting gesture.
"Hannah? Was ist wrong?"

She couldn't help but flinch at his touch. She recognized that he was trying to comfort her, but she just couldn't...couldn't...

She wasn't at that sad place anymore. She wasn't subjecting people to torture, nor was she at the mercy of those on top of her. She didn't have to hear the cries of the hybrids as they were experimented on, again and again, nor did she have to hear that occasional peal of insane laughter that would echo throughout the corridors, often accompanied by a scream or two.

She wasn't with Stephen anymore. She didn't have to see him in pain. He was probably, hopefully, in a better place.

Yet why was she still terrified of the Head Medic in front of her, who had showed her nothing but kindness?

She shook her head quickly."N-n-nothing sir. I'm...fine..."

Maybe because she still wasn't fine at all.

Gerhard frowned, brow furrowing at the obvious lie and the way the young woman seemed to shrink in on herself.
Something awful must have happened, either to her or to someone she cared about, for her to be so badly scarred. He remembered similar reactions from test subjects and several assistants and nurses when he was first starting out at that research facility, before he was promoted and was able to change things for the better, and the Medic felt his too-soft heart go out to the girl.
Exhaling a soft sigh, he gently plucked the water glass from her hands, setting it aside on the table before he carefully pulled the Engineer close, giving her plenty of time to pull away if she wished.
"It's alright, Fraulein. You're safe here. I promise."

When he moved forward towards her, Hannah felt her heart stop. This was it; this was when he was going to hurt her in more ways than she could count. She shut her eyes tightly, the tears starting to trickle down her face and braced herself for the inevitable...

...hug?

Against her better judgement, she slowly opened her eyes. True enough, he had two arms around her, and no Ubersaw in sight. She stared up at him, bewildered and confused. Her mouth opened on its own volition to ask, but she quickly clamped it down again. It had been too long since she had such comforting human contact, and she was afraid to say or do anything to change it. Her stiff body relaxed and she unconsciously leaned in on him. She...she needed this. She had nearly three months of nothing but threats and slaps and sleepless nights, all while in pain from the loss of someone she cared about. If he was going to dissect her after this, then let her have this, at least.

Scenting that spike of fear, Gerhard almost pulled away, but then she relaxed, leaned against him, and he knew he'd done the right thing.
Exhaling a soft sigh, he shifted his grip to hold her a little closer, scooting his chair over a bit so he wouldn't cause either of them to topple to the ground. That would just be embarrassing.
For a long few moments, he just held her, outwardly calm while his mind ran amok.
Someone, somewhere, had hurt this girl. Hurt her enough to scar her, make her scared, vulnerable.
If he ever found out who they were, he was going to personally ensure that they never, ever even got the chance to harm her or anyone else ever again.
Caught up in his own thoughts, Gerhard snapped to his senses at hearing something crunch, and felt a moment of confusion before his chair abruptly attempted to crumple over onto its side. Voicing a startled yelp, he acted on instinct, tentacles whipping out to steady himself and straightening himself up so he wasn't putting weight on his chair, accidentally pulling Hannah with him as he looked for the source of the problem. He exhaled a soft groan, catching sight of the splintered wreck his prehensile lower limbs had made of two of the chair's wooden legs in reaction to his subconscious desires.
"Schiezze..."

She had shrieked when the two of them nearly went tumbling. Thankfully, they didn't end up on the floor in a tangle, but the abrupt fall made her realize exactly what sort of position she'd been with the doctor. Immediately she jumped out of his arms, very embarrassed, but no longer afraid.

"Umm...sorry sir! I...I don't know what came over me..."

If her mother knew what she'd just done, she'd be dead in twenty seconds. Her face flushed red as she inched slightly away from the man and set her gaze on anything else but him. She settled on the broken chair. And that's when her brain snapped to attention. Two broken wooden legs were the problem, but the other two seemed fine. It was normal enough for two legs to snap like that if the pressure was applied more to one side than the other. However, the doctor had moved the chair to be closer to her, he hadn't been leaning on two legs. If the chair was to give out when he was holding her, it should've crumpled downwards. Not to mention that the legs that were broken were the ones on the other side, not the one closest to her...

She shook her head. It didn't matter; she could still fix it, if the doctor wanted her to.

"Excuse me sir, but...would it be alright if I...I fixed the chair? I wouldn't take too long."

She was still too embarrassed to look at him directly though. Hopefully she could make up for her improper behavior by this act.
