A couple of helpful sites

Postby Connal Reid » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:30 am

So thanks to a combination of being bored during renders and having access to stumble upon, I found a couple of nifty websites that could help a good few people out. Especially if you have any characters that are from a different region of the world than you are.

First up, the Speech Accent Archive:
http://accent.gmu.edu/
My favorite part is that you can search by region, by clicking on a map, even. They tell you what city the people providing the voices are from, how they learned English, and how long they've been speaking it. That's really cool.

Next, a list of color idioms from around the globe:
http://www.starchamber.com/colors/color-idioms.html
A nice, spreadsheet style list of idioms in different languages, their direct translations, and what they're actually supposed to mean. There are an astounding number of languages listed, with everything from French and Spanish to Polish and Russian. And yes, the languages that use a different set of symbols to write than the English language does will use their own characters. What's really interesting is how often sayings and colors overlap. There's at least four or five different languages where "a white night" is a sleepless night.

So, I suppose I can't be the only one finding helpful websites like this. This thread can be a place for them, should anyone else come across something nice. What do you think?

Quiet Time Cursing with James (NC-17 fo' so')

Postby Tentacles » Fri Nov 18, 2011 1:51 pm

I'm tried of pretending I'm not the swankiest mother fucker on the block, but I also feel like some of you might need instructions on how, when, and where to drop some fuckin' f-bombs.

Now English is easy enough. Just drop the words tits, piss, shit, or some adjective/verb form of fuck into a sentence and its vuglar gold.

But when cursing with a character of a different nationality, why not add some flare?

Instead of calling that fucking Scout a dummpkoff for the millionth goddamn time, why not call him a arschgeige; you're basically calling him a 'dick head', but more poetically speaking you are calling him an ass violin.

Or say you've been cornered by the stupid sexy Sniper once again? Instead of mumbling 'oh, MERDE' like a fucking pre-scripted bitch, why not get defensive and tell him to nique ta mere! (fuck his mother!). Sure, he might not understand you, the filthy ingrate, but at least you'll have the last laugh before he sends you screaming like a pussy to respawn.

Bitch let's get this party started with an ENTIRE GLOSSARY OF GERMAN SWEARS (because there's SIX MEDICS WHAT THE FUUUU)

HAVE A GREAT FUCKING EVENING.

In the same vein of James' swearing help list, I came across this website while googling French expletives.
