Old Bones [Bryce]

Where everyone arrives. Arrival is not team-separate, and we trust you'll be able to figure out which you're on. We send supplies plus purchases every month, on the first. The original dock was destroyed, and the current one is still only half-finished, so you're dropped off a bit of a ways up the bank where its safer to land. Just don't get lost.
The team Warehouses also stand out near here, or at least used to. RED's is the only one still standing, while BLUs seems to have been burned to the ground. Or maybe exploded. Or both.

Old Bones [Bryce]

((PROTIP this thread is BACKDATED to April 20th, sometime during the morning because why not))

Though it had been two days since the initial fiasco at the warehouse, but Niklas was still feeling the effects, as was the rest of the team. The aftermath of the monster's death had almost been a bigger problem than the monster itself. Almost all of the team that had gone inside had suffered some degree of acid burns, and Kurt had even lost a hand. His leg and his feet were still giving him trouble despite a healthy dose from the medigun.

But through all of the physical and emotional exhaustion and effort that had resulted from the entire ordeal, he found himself thinking frequently of the ghostly sniper they had encountered. He remembered how the man was unable to speak, and how happy he had looked once the monster was dead. But most of all, Niklas remembered how his features had literally lit up when the medigun beam had passed over his corpse.

So when he found himself awake this morning, despite the pain he was still in, that he couldn't sleep in late again. And soon, he found himself limping his way across the swamp, looking quite disheveled in civilian clothing and carrying nothing but the medigun. Despite the light of the morning, the inside of the warehouse was still quite dark.

"Hallå, ghost? Are you still here?" He ventured slowly inside the old building, treading lightly. "I came back..."

A greenish flicker of light flitted by the door, no bigger than a firefly, but as it drifted closer to the sunken bunker, the flicker became a haze then finally formulated into the vague translucent form of the Sniper.
With the monster gone and the bunker doors left cracked open, the long dead marksman was reveling in his newfound mobility. It wasn't much, he could only roam a few feet before his connection to the Respawn chip still stuck in his corpse grew too frail to support his image properly, but it was better than being stuck in the dark. He'd spent the last couple days wandering around the warehouse, testing his limits and observing how much the environment had changed. Though, really, he spent most of his time looking up through a hole in the roof. It was good to be able to see the sky again...
He waved to the Medic, smiling warmly. He noticed the MediGun, and gave the contraption a questioning look before turning the same look to the doctor, a hand gesturing to the equipment. What did the Medic hope to achieve using the healing device on a dead man?

He flinched a bit at the small green light, but his surprise melted away once it reformed into the translucent image of the long dead sniper. Niklas was pleased to find that he was looking much happier than when they had first encountered. Not very surprising, considering what he had been sealed inside with.

He waved in greeting to the sniper, smiling back himself. Though he was puzzled at his confused reaction to the medigun. "You don't remember?" He guessed not. It had only happened for a split second after all, a happy accident that he was certain only he had noticed.

"Well, it doesn't matter. You'll find out soon enough. And I think you'll like the results." He limped over to where the corpse was situated, laying his medigun on the floor and pulling up a box to sit on, happy to take his weight off of his legs. Aiming the nozzle at the body and flipped the switch, pushing the lever forward. As the telltale red beam of light emitted from the end of the gun, he turned to watch the effects on the flickery image.

"How does that feel?"

The ghost was obviously confused, frowning as he moved to see what exactly the Medic was doing, giving the man a bewildered look as the healing gun was set to work on his corpse. Yes, that was his body, nice try, but you can't heal dead-
Oh.
OH!
The Sniper's eyes widened, surprise replacing confusion as the green-ish glow of his image gained more natural, human colors, the flickering fading out completely as the chip put the new energy to use. He was still sort of translucent, not all the way there, but the image itself was much clearer and better defined, almost healthy looking.
Looking at his hands, his gloves turned their proper color along with his fingers, the marksman slowly moved to sit down next to the doctor. It had been so long, he'd forgotten...

Niklas smiled as he saw the healing beam take effect. And judging by the sniper's surprised expression, it looked like it was doing more than just coloring him in. He looked more corporeal as well. Not entirely solid, but a far cry from the flickery, barely visible image of before.

"I knew that something wasn't quite normal about your body when it suddenly stopped being on fire," He said, turning to face the more colorful ghost. After James had gotten a little itchy with his finger trigger, it had put out the flames by itself as if nothing had happened. "You look better. Can you try talking?"

It took a moment for the ghost to react, fascinated by his own hands, but he eventually nodded, visibly swallowing in a superfluous gesture of anxiety before he opened his mouth. He tried a few words, looking over to the Medic to see if the man had heard anything, frowning when he realized nothing had come out. Brow furrowing, he tried again, visibly straining to say something.
His colors seemed to fluctuate, image fuzzing slightly at the edges, though his head and neck seemed to abruptly grow more defined, more real and solid, as if his efforts were directing the energy where he needed it most.

After a few moments, a faint voice, no louder than a soft whisper finally broke the quiet.
"-goddamn it why isn't this WORKING?!"
The Sniper jerked, eyes going wide in shock, then he grinned, looking up to the Medic.
"Can y'hear me?"
His voice was soft, sort of fuzzy, like it was coming through an old radio with bad speakers, but he had a voice, and that was what mattered.

Niklas' heart sank at the sniper's first attempts to speak. Had he been wrong about his hunch? But he regained hope when he saw that the ghost seemed to be focusing his energy on a specific part of his body. It was an interesting process to watch, if a bit tense.

And then, suddenly, there was a voice. A small, distorted voice, but a voice nonetheless. He felt a surge of triumph as the ghost spoke his first words in god knows how long, possibly as much triumph as the ghost himself was feeling. "Yes, I can hear you," he said, moving the medigun closer to him. "Easy questions first. What's your name, where are you from, and how long have you been stuck out here in this godawful place?"

The ghost's smile somehow grew even wider at the confirmation that he could actually be heard. He had so many questions, and now he could finally ask-!
Oh, right introduction.
"Bryce Langley, Ceduna, an' I honestly dunno. What year is it?"
It was round about the mid-seventies when he'd gotten trapped in that godforsaken hole, unaware that committing seppuku held no release from the darkness. He knew he'd been down there a long time, but his watch didn't work and he didn't know enough about radiation to judge the material's degradation and use it to estimate a passage of time.
God, he hoped it wasn't too long.
Bosko would be worried sick...

Niklas couldn't help but feel happy and triumphant when the ghost smiled so widely. He just looked so happy, and he still had his sense of self and memory, that was great. Not much sense of time, but that was understandable, seeing as he was sealed up in the bunker for god knows how long and no way of telling time.

"Today it is April 20th, 199X. What was the approximate date that you were sealed up down there?" He had a feeling that it was a long time, considering in how bad of shape the base was in in the first place. Hopefully not too long. "I'm Niklas, by the way. Niklas Lind. Nice to meet you, Bryce."

The Sniper's good humor evaporated at being told the date, eyes going wide in shock before his expression crumpled, the shock mingling with a combination of deep hurt and a few levels of grief as his whole body seemed to wilt.
He'd been figuring a few months, maybe a couple years, the experience feeling like it had lasted eons but barely lasting any time at all in comparison. How wrong he was. Horrendously, horrifyingly, gut wrenchingly wrong.

Twenty years.
Twenty bloody fucking years trapped in that godforsaken death trap hole in the ground.
He was only supposed to have been gone a few weeks at most, the way the transfer order had sorted things out, then there was the whole thing with everybody getting sick and the Respawn malfunctioning and-

Oh God.
Bosko was probably dead by now. Dead for good.
Along with everyone else he cared about.

"Bryce? Are you alright? Nej då, stay with me..." Niklas had feared this outcome. His heart sank with the sniper's expression, the guy just went from incredibly happy to incredibly miserable. He didn't blame the man, he'd be just as unhappy if he had been sealed up alone for god knows how long. He wanted to lay a hand on the man's shoulder, or give him a hug, or do something, but his intangibility made that impossible.

All he could really do was talk, and even he knew at the back of his head his words couldn't really do much here. "Listen to me," he said, leaning closer, his face lined with worry, "I'd like to be able to help you, but I need to know more about what happened. Can you try and think back...?"

It took him several moments to reply, visibly struggling to keep it together, not just emotionally, but physically as well, his image flickering and turning fuzzy in places before he bit down on his bottom lip and forced himself to come out of his tunnel vision.
He tried to speak, having a moment of panic before recalling the level of concentration it took to give himself a voice, and he fought to focus, though it looked more like he wanted to break down and cry.
"I- I was sent in f'back up, local team was havin' a hard time wi' things. Was supposed t'be a quick thing, get in, get out."
He swallowed.
"Wasn't. Obviously."
The Sniper lifted a hand to rub across his face, his hat being knocked askew by the gesture.
"Respawn was malfunctionin', started- It started spittin' out these monster things instead'a people, had t'put 'em out of their misery, only right thing. Then- Then our Engie, he-"
His voice gave out on him for a few moments, lips moving without sound before he caught on to the fact he wasn't being heard.
"He found the bunker here on accident, had this dog that sniffed it out, an'- An' everybody started gettin' sick..."

Ok, good, he was regaining control. He was still visibly shaken and upset, but he was talking. Niklas stayed quiet, letting the sniper speak, though he really strained to hear him at times. He didn't voice this though, best to not push the ghost too far emotionally. He could wait if need be.

He frowned at the explanation given. So respawn was giving them trouble, even back then? Not surprising. He could ask the exact date of Bryce's death later, this was far more important. "Can you tell me the nature of the sickness, and what possibly may have caused it? And what happened afterwards?"

"It was radiation."
The Sniper tapped his fingers on his knee, a nervous gesture as he glanced towards the bunker.
"Was supposed t'be this... Secondary generator, boost power for the Respawn, but nobody even knew it was there, couldn't monitor it properly. We only found out about it cause it had a bloody meltdown an' killed both the Engie an' his dog."
He made a slight gesture towards the heavy metal doors.
"That thing...? It- It was- Used t'be-"
His voice gave out, but he didn't try to get it back, his image fuzzing from the stress before he pulled himself together, both literally and figuratively. But... Different.
It was still the same man, but somehow, he'd changed the visual he presented, giving himself heavy claws and large animal canines that poked out over his lower lip. Better defenses against a threat that was really no more, but still carried a great deal of fear.

"Radiation?" His eyes widened. That was a whole new can of worms. Meeting a horrible monster that bled acid was terrible enough, but radiation was another issue entirely. He sighed, taking off his glasses to rub at his eyes. He would need to talk to Kurt or Henry very soon to deal with it, lest he risk radiation sickness for everyone around.

He put his glasses back on and let the sniper continue to talk, only speaking when he had trailed off. "... Used to be what, exactly...?" he suddenly sat up straight when Bryce altered his image. "What? How are you doing that?"

While he'd been expecting further questions, the last one had the Sniper looking up to the Medic with open confusion, unwittingly revealing other changes he'd made, including slitted cat-like pupils and slightly pointed ears.
He opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, only to jerk in startlement at feeling something off. A hand moved towards his mouth, only for him to jerk again at seeing those claws, and he lurched to his feet, image flickering again. When he solidified, there were more changes, his forearms covered in a layer of thick looking scales that melded into fur.
Shock turned into fear, the image of his self fuzzing and falling in and out of focus with more and more going weird until the marksman abruptly flickered into a mere fleck of white light, which fluttered around anxiously for several moments.
He eventually reappeared on the Medic's opposite side, curled up in a visibly shaking ball with his head in his hands, fully human once more.
"...sorry..."

"Bryce, what are you--- what?" This situation just went from happy to sad to confusing. Seemed like a pretty normal process for most situations out here, but this was still entirely strange. Where were all these animal features coming from? He nearly fell off of his box when the sniper appeared on his opposite side.

"Can you..." he didn't really know how to word this nicely so, he just said it. "Can you explain to me what just happened, and why you suddenly grew fur and claws?" His voice softened when he realized how distressed the ghost was asking. "Listen, I understand this is a lot for you to handle, but just slow down for a minute and collect yourself."

Mentally, Bryce thanked whatever deity watching over him for the Medic's calm patience, helping him calm down and collect himself.
He was still tense, struggling, but he was trying, doing his best to get things sorted out so he could talk and explain as much as he understood.
"I- It's- That- That's n-never happened before."
The Sniper was visibly shaken, even moreso than he had been before. He'd never done that before, never had bits of him alter from the default data of his chip, but... But he'd done that light ball thing a few times, focused himself into something small and less power hungry to try and go further. Maybe... Maybe this was something similar?
Brow furrowing, he sat up a bit straighter and held a hand out in front of him, looking it over before his eyes narrowed, focusing intensely on the semi-translucent but human hand. He gave a startled, half-muted yelp when the appendage abruptly fizzled and then refocused with claws and fur, fuzzing out again when he flailed in panic and returning as his normal hand.
It took him a bit to collect himself enough to speak.
"OKay. That's scary."

"Well I don't know. Have you ever tried doing anything like that before...?" Niklas hoped that it wasn't a case of corrupted data. That would make things much thornier and difficult than they already were, and this was all on top of the threat of radiation. But it seemed like something that he could alter at will, at least if he was thinking about it.
"It looks like you can control it," he said, readjusting himself on his seat. "Can you alter your shape into other things? Or imitate someone else's appearance?"

"No, no, I've never- Well, sort of. I- That little speck'a light thing, feels similar."
He swallowed, an unnecessary gesture, but there was a spark of curiosity in his eyes and he didn't seem quite so scared, sitting up next to the Medic and looking down at himself before looking up at the doctor's second bout of questions. The idea that he could turn himself into something else was scary, true, but it was also, well, neat.
"I- I dunno, guess I could try..."
A moment to turn, brow furrowed as he looked the Medic over before inhaling an unneeded breath and closing his eyes, biting down on his lower lip as he concentrated. It took a second or two, but he started getting fuzzy around the edges, like a camera going out of focus, and then-

There was a second, translucent version of the big Swedish Medic.

It was a somewhat simplified image, a few details missed in the quick observation, but it was still obviously Niklas. Who opened his eyes, blinked, gave a startled squeak and was abruptly Bryce again, missing his hat and looking rather disheveled.
"Ahhhhgeeeeeze that feels weird!"
