A Long Lacking Pier [ Intro, Open ]

Where everyone arrives. Arrival is not team-separate, and we trust you'll be able to figure out which you're on. We send supplies plus purchases every month, on the first. The original dock was destroyed, and the current one is still only half-finished, so you're dropped off a bit of a ways up the bank where its safer to land. Just don't get lost.
The team Warehouses also stand out near here, or at least used to. RED's is the only one still standing, while BLUs seems to have been burned to the ground. Or maybe exploded. Or both.

"The dock... Where's the dock?"

Even from this distance they could see the damage. What could be called a dock had been torn to shreds, wooden shafts broken with jagged edges reaching up toward the muddled sky. Whatever had destroyed it had to have been big – a boat perhaps? Freedmen dared not ask the current Capitan, who looked very much like the sort of man to dislike probing questions.

An apathetic shrug and a scraggly voice, the sign of a chronic smoker, came from the Capitan. "Search me buddy. Either way, this is the end of the line. Gonna have to drop you off over there." A stump of a finger is jerked over the burly man's shoulder to a dry spot of land presumably stuck behind the trees."'Gonna have to walk the rest of the way," he continued, moving back into the main cabin to turn the boat around. Freedmen did not protest. There was nothing he could do to alter this circumstance and besides, he had his boots on. A trek through the swamp could not be too horrible. "As long as you don't get lost," he said to the boat's railing which he was gripping tighter than necessary.

He released his hold, backing up. On second glance the railing looked rather unstable, deteriorating by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture, iron oxidation or rust in colloquial terms.

'2Fe(s) + 2H2O(l) + O2(g) → 2Fe2+(aq) + 4OH-(aq).' A simple equation, known by heart. Unsafe to touch and even more unsafe to lean against. He would be wet enough getting to the base without taking a swim.

It did not take long to arrive at the aforementioned drop off, even less time for the boat to desert him in ankle deep water, clutching both ratty blue bags to his sides. There was silence around him as the creatures settled and grew accustomed to the intruder's presence, frogs croaking and insects buzzing soon after. Swamps were marvelous examples of diverse ecosystems but he was not keen on waiting for an alligator to venture near and make a meal out of him. The scientist lingered until he could no longer hear the motor boat, turning to confront the imposing tangle of trees and vines before him.

It would not be a far walk from his estimations. Brimming with aprehension, Freedmen took his first steps into the newest (and soggiest) chapter of his life.
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

Gerhard was not in his Infirmary.
A rare occurrence, but one that had become more frequent since the reappearance of a missing teammate and the arrival of a new one all in one fell swoop (that he didn't particularly like to think about). It had become rather stifling in the enclosed space, and he wasn't able to go swimming with that toothy monstrosity on the loose. Blinded or not, the thing was viscious and intelligent and he really just did not want to risk it.
So, he was out for a walk.
He was out by the warehouse, the wooden building scorched and perforated in parts from the chaos that had taken place, and he frowned down at a large footprint he had found. Well, he called it a footprint, but it was really more like a bird-print. It was hard to make out, being partially overgrown, but it was deep enough that the wet earth hadn't really been able to swallow it up again.
It was something like 12 to 15 inches in length from the tip of the middle frontwards facing toe to the tip of the one backwards facing toe, and from the deep puncture like marks, whatever the thing was, it had some pretty formidable talons.
"What kind of creature are you...?

Mud clung to his boots, wet patches of earth mixed with mud threatening to suck him in every few yards Barry pushed forward. Already, he knew this would not be a well maintained base with so much of nature working against a man made structure like itself. As it happened, this very thought occurred to him as he made a path past a cluster of trees and came into view of a large building, even more devastated than the docks had been. The walk had not been long and he hurries from out behind the warehouse, skidding on the slick ground as scorch marks draw his eye.

"A Pyro," he surmised, taking into consideration the wetness of the moss before he sets down his bags to approach the lowest mark he can find, pressing a pale palm to it. It couldn't be more than a few weeks old, a month tops. Barry could fathom several reasons why a Pyro would burn this building seemingly at random. He put those out of his mind, stepping back and combing a hand through his permanently scruffy hair. "The base. Focus on getting to the base, Freedmen."

Turning, he was suddenly aware of another's presence, a man crouched down and studying something on the ground and he shut his mouth in a hurry, picking up the pace to snatch his bags back up. RED or BLU this man was an unknown variable and that sent the scientist's mind scrambling for an appropriate reaction.

He choose silence.
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

Focused on attempting to measure the print in spans of his hand (since his tentacles moved too much to be very good measuring sticks), Gerhard didn't catch onto the fact that someone was nearby until he heard something crunch behind him.
He jerked up, scrambling upright as he turned to see who or what was attempting to sneak up on him, already hissing softly in defense. There was too much in this place that had continuously proved dangerous to one's continued well being...
"Was?"
The TentaMedic straightened, looking over the stranger, with his muddy boots and luggage, and then realized the direction the man was heading in.
"Are you a new recruit?"

The back of Barry's throat felt thick, almost as if it was stuffed full of cotton. He knew it was only his nerves though he struggled to get out a word, glancing to the massive building to buy time as he fidgeted in place, digging the heel of his boot into the dirt.

"Yes. I'm— I'm Barry. Theoretical Physi— No, Engineer. For Builders League United." A nervous laugh left him when he continued. "Sorry. Sometimes I forget what they call my class." Freedmen did not let his eyes linger long on the man but he was able to absorb a few key details: 1) this man was a professional, 2) he was a Medic (as his uniform plainly told Barry) and 3) he was likely a very good soldier. The last bit was an assumption, a very educated assumption. This Medic was heavy in the shoulders and adapted for combat, unlike himself. A Medic was a Medic and Freedmen made a note to talk to him about 'issue' and keeping it in check. Now he was just realizing how difficult it would be to get shipments of the most basic supplies here.

"And you? Your name, I mean."
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

Gerhard waited patiently for a reply, and smiled when he not only got an answer, but an introduction as well, and he moved forward, keeping a small amount of distance so as to keep the newest addition to the Reject Club from feeling crowded.
"Vere you about to say Physicist? Ah, Henry vill like you, I'm certain of zhat, zhough he's a little... Intense."
The doctor chuckled softly, shaking his head before offering his hand.
"Gerhard Melsbach, Head Medic. Vell, only Medic, at least for BLU. Do you need help vizh dein luggage?"
This new man...
He seemed... Skittish sounded like a fitting word, perhaps also shy. Maybe a bit paranoid. Judging from the man's physical stature and the dark rings around his eyes, there was likely some kind of health problem involved with his apparent insomnia, he could only hope that he would have the correct medication to help. If not, he could always ask Niklas about substitutes, the big Swede had more experience in that field.
But he was certainly intelligent, and very polite. Very good signs.

"Gerhard Melsbach," he repeated. "Good to meet you." The accent was distinctly German as most Medics trended toward being. He'd hypothesized long ago it was because of the second World War, all of the German doctors seeking asylum from the Allies and world at large. Barry didn't think BLU would hire former ex-Nazis or anyone associated with the party and this man wasn't proudly displaying a swastika. Barry knew it was none of his business and put it out of his mind but he couldn't help but be a little curious. What good of a scientist would he be if he was content with the everyday or took reality at face value?

His fellow comrade's hand was given a suspicious glance for a brief second after all these thoughts had sped through Barry's head and after adjusting his grip on one of his bags, the scientist shook the physician's hand gingerly. "Henry is...another Engineer?" Withdrawing his hand, he could already sense the word 'intense' was not used in a manner of compliments; only in a way to mask a bad trait for a good one. It could mean a number of things really. Henry could be temperamental, argumentative, stubborn...the list went on and on. 'It will do you no good to worry," Ripley's voice chimed from within his bag and Barry almost hit the bag despite there being no actual voice. Not that Gerhard could hear. He stilled his reflexes and adjusted his bag, Ripley's reassurances dying down as he could see he was not wanted. Barry could very well take care of his own stress levels, even if the idea of meeting new faces was tying his stomach up into knots and making his fingers twitch—he disguised this by drumming them against the bag's surface.

"I've got them, no thanks. Could we. Get to the base? I've traveled for a long ways."
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

The hesitation had Gerhard worrying, and he wondered if his disguise had glitched for a moment before his hand was taken, and he couldn't help his smile widening, even if it was only fractionally.
"If you are sure... Zhis vay, zhen. I vould say to vatch dein step, but I can see you have already been experiencing zhe vonderful local environment. Gute zhing you have strudy boots, ja?"
Keeping his pace level with the new, skittish Engineer, the hybrid Medic calmly led the way towards their home base.

It really wasn't far at all, maybe 20-30 feet from the warehouse, but the low hanging trees and lingering mists coupled with the age of the building made the place all but vanish, so Gerhard honestly wasn't surprised that the structure had gone unnoticed. At least there was a bit of sun today...
He held the door open, frowning a moment when the hinges squeaked before stepping aside to let Barry pass him.
"Vould you like zhe grand tour, or vould you like to go choose a bunk first? Zhere are a couple unused guest rooms if you prefer someplace more private, but zhey'll need cleaning."

Happy to tag along behind the Medic, Barry kept a comfortable distance between them, still wary in the back of his brain. Gerhard was a kind man though he knew deceptions could be deceiving. 'Best to remain on your toes, Freedmen,' the scientist thought, his mind taken away by the squelching of mud beneath his boots. It was a pleasant, steady rhythm that kept his mind occupied until the base came into view, his gaze turning upward toward the roof. Run down and damaged; hardly in a fit state for habitation. "Has this base always—" the shrill squeak of rusty metal made him wince, teeth git "—been in such a...state? Since it was reopened."

It was musty inside, and he suspected mold growing in the moist cracks spread across the walls like capillaries in the alveoli. This...would not be a good time. Could he even have a proper laboratory and workshop when the environment was creeping in on human settlements?

Barry turned, pausing only to peer up at a most elaborate crack spanning the length of the ceiling. "Seeing the possible rooms would be good," he murmured, looking back down at the Medic and attempting a shrug that turned out to be jerky and awkward. "I don't mind cleaning if the supplies are available." Maintaining his room would do him a world of good, calm him down and make the room his while keeping his mind off of his worries which were too numerous to mention. "And, if there are any, the workshops and labs. Please."
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

"Cleaningk...?"
Gerhard actually had to stop and look, and felt his face warm as he realized just how bad the place looked. They'd been so busy with the wareouse incident and the radiation scare and trying to fix Respawn, no one had even thought to go around and clean. Well, his Infirmary was clean, same with the attached laboratory and office, but that was his space to take care of. The bunks and everything upstairs was probably better...
"Ah, sorry about zhe mess, ve haff been... Distracted, you couldt say. Zhere vas ein incident not too long ago involving a mess zhat vas left behind by zhose who came before us. It's dealt vizh now, but..."
The Medic shook his head, exhaling a soft sigh as he frowned and picked at a spot of rust on one of the door hinges before shaking his head and moving forward.
"Anyvay, zhe barracks und rooms are on zhe second floor, zhe stairs are zhis vay. As for lab spaces, zhere's vone zhat ist attached to mein Infirmary und anozzer vorkshop next door. Henry uses zhat vone more often zhen not, but I know he vouldn't mind sharingk."

Barry looked down the hall, looking left and right for the stairs he'd mentioned. A map would be useful if the base wasn't so small compared to say...Hydro or Mountainlab. He'd learn his way around eventually. "It's no problem. The Administrators are to blame for..." He stopped and looked around, searching the battered walls for cameras. If there were, he'd have to tinker with them, alter them somehow or destroy them altogether. An irrational fear he recognized, one he couldn't shake no matter how many pills he took.

"...Blame for this state." Quickly he shook his head, drawing himself out of his fear. There was time for that later once he was settled. He'd keep an eye open for cameras within cameras on his way up. Glancing back to the Medic and shifting from one foot to the other, he looked down the hall. "If you could tell me where the cleaning supplies are, I'll take care of some of the mess. What I can in one day." Ready to take off and settle in, Barry could not ignore the nagging feeling in the back of his head. He couldn't just walk away without....saying something. Reluctant and tense, he turned to face Gerhard, swallowing the lump in his throat.

"Gerhard...? There's something else. You should— should...should read my medical file. When you can."
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

Gerhard couldn't help a small smile at Barry's remark, though he missed the furtive search for cameras.
"It's alright, you shouldt use the day to settle in und try meetingk some of zhe ozzers, cleaningk und all zhat can vait for tomorrow."
Knowing Henry, he'd probably either be in the workshop or down fixing Respawn, and Maddy might be in the library...
He paused at hearing the reluctance in the new man's voice, and turned to face the Engineer with an openly questioning look that turned stern at the mention of the man's medical file.
"Ist zhere somezhingk zhat I shouldt know zhat vouldn't be revealed in a basic physical?"
Though his expression was almost cold, his voice was soft, and his eyes expressed the worry the rest of his features did not. He tried to keep his protective instincts on the down low, but sometimes... It was difficult not to care.

"A physical can't decipher brain chemistry."

As he spoke Barry tapped the side of his head with his index finger, swallowing again while he fought to keep his voice from shutting off altogether. If Gerhard was the only Medic on BLU he had no other option other than to tell him, spill the metaphorical beans on what was wrong with him. Squaring his shoulders, Barry inhaled deeply and looked the taller man in the eye, speaking in a hushed murmur. "Puh— Paranoid schizophrenia. There is a section on it in my file but. I thought you would like to know up front." His tongue felt like it was doing cartwheels in his mouth, down his throat, and into the gastric acid of his stomach. Stopping here, he looked away at the wall, ripping out a loose clump of threads on the handle of his bag. Any longer and it would be torn to shred by his nervous hands.

"That's...all I wanted to say. There is more information in my file, more than enough for controlling...it."
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

A gentle hand moved, stalling the nervous nit picking and drawing attention upwards to the doctor, his expression still that stern neutral pose, but there was caring in his eyes.
"It's alright. Ve all have issues here, in vone vay or anozzer. It just so happens zhat yours can be treated medically."
A small smile, hand patting the back of Barry's, and Gerhard stepped back, giving the man some space as he gestured down the hall.
"Kommen Sie, let's get you settled in. Ve can talk more about zhis vhen you have your physical, ja? For privacy's sake."

A hand on his shook him up and Barry recoiled a bit, closing his hand into a fist around the loose clump so Gerhard wouldn't be able to pry his fingers away. What'd he would really have liked would to hold Ripley in his hands, a solid object that he can hold onto tight. Ripley had no business being out and Ripley, it's voice muffled, agreed whole heatedly. 'Keep your head down and we'll get through this. You will worry yourself sick!' 'He knows, doesn't he? He knows and even though I'm not sick, he will up my dosage. There's nothing wrong with talking to you!' Already he felt ill and Gerhard's eyes seemed judging rather than caring; Barry's thoughts almost fell into disorganization right then and there but Ripley chimed in just in time. 'Not for now. If you keep getting anxious you know how things could be. Please, Barry, relax.' Giving the doctor reason to think that Barry was not as stable as he said would be foolish.

"...Right. Of course. Later, in private. Thank you, Doctor." Barry stepped away, hitching the strap of his bag over his shoulder, inching toward the hallway. "I will see you later?"
It’s not. An ideal world, that is. Pity.

The TentaMedic noticed how tense the Engineer became, those mismatched pupils standing out all the more as the man's eyes widened, but he purposely forced himself to act as if he hadn't, as if he wasn't feeling hurt by the man's distrust. Barry couldn't help himself, there was no reason to feel offended...
"Of course. Zhe stairs are down at zhe ozzer end of zhe base zhrough zhe kitchen area, und zhe barrack are at zhe ozzer end of zhe hall upstairs. Zhe more private rooms are in zhe middle. If you haff any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask meinself or anyvone else here on base, ve're all a razzer decent group."
