Falling Out of the Sky (Intro, Open!)

Where everyone arrives. Arrival is not team-separate, and we trust you'll be able to figure out which you're on. We send supplies plus purchases every month, on the first. The original dock was destroyed, and the current one is still only half-finished, so you're dropped off a bit of a ways up the bank where its safer to land. Just don't get lost.
The team Warehouses also stand out near here, or at least used to. RED's is the only one still standing, while BLUs seems to have been burned to the ground. Or maybe exploded. Or both.

Falling Out of the Sky (Intro, Open!)

A plane, Anu decided. It had to be a plane, conveying his crate along to wherever he was going. He couldn't see out; all the air holes were at angles, probably to prevent just that. Or anybody seeing into the cramped, damp interior. He kept quiet because he didn't have a choice. Outside the crew was talking, too far away to hear. But he could feel the vibrations of the craft, he could hear the whine of the engine... and his theory was confirmed as he felt himself being pulled backwards in a take-off.

He had no real feelings about being in a box on a plane. Just one more thing to hate and one more reason to hate everyone around him. The handler that fed him the drugged meat, the handlers that locked him inside, and whoever was waiting at the destination for a show from the very late Dr. Caldwell's favourite project.

Once upon a time, he'd been a street performer; he did tricks for suits then, too. It was difficult to remember if he felt the same way about them then, but he doubted it.

This rambling line of thought continued for some time, until it was sharply interrupted.

There was an explosion, yelling, and an ominous change in the sound of the engine's whining until they sputtered and died.

Everything shook violently until they were falling... to a hard stop.

Anu woke up to pain, light, noise, and smells all around him. His gills flared and his opened his eyes. Ow. The crate was cracked open from the impact, that crumpled the smoking wreckage of the plane. A survivor groaned up front.

Once the crate was cracked open enough to escape it, Anu made sure there were no survivors. Then he pulled his way out of the plane and into... swamp. It was so fragrant that it was overwhelming, so many things to take in as he slid into warm water and went to make some solid distance between him and the wreckage. Light over the water and through trees, the life swimming around him, it was dizzying after all that clean, lifeless inside.

He'd never really been outside like he was now. The world was a lot to take in.

It had felt the distant vibrations in the water of the plane hitting the swamp, but didn't bother to investigate. But then there was the taste blood on the water. Faint but fresh. Human? Something else was mixed in there, something it couldn't quite identify. It dimly reminded it of the fish medic that had taken his eye, and a twinge of rage sprang into its mind. Whatever it was it was going to regret setting down in its territory.

The powerful beast made its way across the swamp effortlessly, keeping its head tilted to the side to keep an eye out for the intruder. It spotted the curious thing bobbing in the murky depths. Not quite a man, but not quite a creature either. It reminded him of better times. Bloodier times.

Jaws agape, the monster launched itself at the tentacled Spy. He wasn't even going to give this brat a warning.

The 'brat' didn't notice he was being approached right away; too distracted. But he noticed that giant creature coming right at him, oh yes he did. Big and ugly and mean had a stake in this swamp.

Anu didn't have a stake in this swamp, but there hadn't even been a warning shot, so to speak, he knew he had to fight. Instinct told him it was the only option. Anu complied quickly with his instincts, enough to dash under in a hard snap of his mantle, circling down and not thinking anymore.

Big meant it would keep going through the water, or at least, need time to stop or turn. Usually. So Anu launched a counter-attack, but he went for the back of it; he could bite a tail or a leg slow them down with his venom. Usually.

Quick little bastard, wasn't he? The monster did indeed keep barreling through the water, unable to turn itself in time as the tentacled Spy ducked underneath its bulk.

Anu didn't know that both ends of the sea monster were dangerous - sensing the Spy behind itself, it lashed out with its tail, aiming to strike the impudent little upstart before he could sink his teeth in its flesh.

Just what he was going for; the tail came for him.

Anu didn't dodge, but he felt that as he let it hit him. Rattled skull, lungs squeezed empty, and he'd be all bruise in the morning. He clung on, ten limbs, some claws, some tentacles wrapping around it, despite wondering if he'd broken something. Can't stop. He bit down, finding thick, difficult skin. It cut at his gums, but he kept gnawing, just had to reach blood.

Ow, ow, ow.

Now he thought about trying to escape.

The monster winced. The tentaspy's bites were small, but deep. Thrashing did nothing to dislodge the Spy, suckers digging into its scaley hide.

It started jack knifing its body, contorting its tail towards its mouth - no small feat for the stiff spined marine reptile. Each violent swing brought the hapless Spy closer and closer to its snapping jaws however, until finally it grasped the middle of one tentacle in its hooked fangs.

It didn't even need to bite down fully. As its tail swung away from its head one last time, the sheer speed and force snapped the tentacle from its owner, leaving the writhing appendage in the monster's maw.

Anu went into a kind of state of shock, shoving off and away from the monstrous body in a panicked frenzy. Suddenly he didn't know what he'd do if the beast decided to pursue. He just swam as fast as he could without worry about which direction he was headed. Just get away from that thing.

Stupid. Stupid. Obvious target, bright and bumbling in unfamiliar territory. He got angry at himself, and the beast, clinging to anger so he didn't focus on the missing limb. He had to swim for his life.

Swim, swim.

Anu was fast, but not nearly as fast as before.

Oh no you don't. Still trailing and gulping down the tentacle in its mouth, it gave chase to the hapless Spy. He needed to be taught a lesson at least, if not violently murdered for threatening the hierarchy of this swamp.

Fortunately for the tentaSpy, some venom had made its way into its veins, and it had already been swimming wounded. It pursued Anu with fierce determination, but it was obvious it wouldn't be able to keep up for long.

A myriad of curse words suddenly flashed in his head as he looked back. He narrowed his eyes. Minge põrgu, värdjas.*

Anu put his head down and pressed on. He was in danger of running out of steam, too; losing blood, deep bruises making his muscles protest, still might be something broken. Not exactly time to stop and check. His (remaining attached) limbs moved together with the frantic undulation of his body, moving him straight through that water he'd been marveling at before. A trail of purple-red blood behind him.

Didn't want to think he was slowing faster; but he was afraid he was.

The swamp jerk rides again!

Postby Tentacles » Fri Jun 08, 2012 8:40 pm

What had the little bastard done to it?! Its muscles felt heavy, as if the water were liquid concrete. Each lurch forward seemed to take its strength away. He did this...somehow!

When the monster finally caught up with Anu, it had much more in mind then mere dismemberment. No, he was going to enjoy sending the tentaspy screaming into death. It wrapped its jaws around the hapless Spy's torso and jetted for the surface of the swamp. Flinging its head back, it sent the Spy careening through the air, smacking back down onto the surface. It repeated the process again with its tail, as if playing a one man game of ping pong with itself.

Teeth ripped into his flesh, then he was flying... again. Not gracefully, the beast's throw had him an awkward tangle to hurdle back down. Wind whistled in his ears, his braid of hair hit him in the face. Then a smack exploding in his skull. This time Anu hit the tail and was more than a little dazed, barely feeling the second journey above the surface of the water.

But he did have a thought.

Go for the eyes.

Anu opened his again and got a hold of himself, just barely. Go for the eyes, try to escape again. That was as good a plan as any; so he played possum, until the face was within reach again. The face full of teeth, but one thing at a time.

The creature nudged the battered 'corpse', disappointed. It had hoped its victim would have held on for a little longer...feh, they don't build hybrids like they used to.

No sense in letting the corpse go to waste.

It grasped another tentacle in it jaws and started to twist, aiming to yank the appendage off.

Not that one it didn't.

Anu surged back to life, flinging himself up at the beast's armoured face. Hissing, practically spitting between his pointed teeth. He clawed up a rugged cheek, black fingers digging his way toward the target; one ugly eye. No scales on that. He swiped, shuddering from pain and shock.

Not a corpse yet. Not a corpse anytime soon if he had anything to say about it.

A scream split the water. More of a blaring, siren like wail. The tentaspy had managed to pluck out its remaining eye!

Lashing out blindly, the monster snapped its jaws at the water, desperately trying to grasp the Spy before he could slip away.

It's open now guise.

Postby Anu Laar » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:14 pm

Anu jerked away, just missing the snap of angry teeth coming after him; by going down, again, instead of immediately darting straight out.

The sound was terrifying. It shook him deep down, too much to even feel relief. Especially since he wasn't out of the woods yet. His own very intact eyes wide and bloodshot, Anu went back to focusing on nothing but escape.

But he was even slower. If he'd been walking on land, trying to run instead of swim, he would have been stumbling and limping along. The smell of his own blood clung everywhere, blood rushed in his ears as he skimmed just above the soft, rotting bottom of the water and got a precious little distance. Outside of biting distance worked for him.

A wild Pyro appears!

Postby Connal Reid » Fri Jun 08, 2012 10:34 pm

Connal was, admittedly, an extremely oblivious man. Many things during his stay at Swamp Rat, important or otherwise, had gone completely unnoticed.

A god damn airplane crashing into the squishy ground wasn't one of those things.

He couldn't have been certain looking from the window, but it looked like the smoke that was presumably from the wreckage was awfully close to the fishy-monster's favorite water hole. Obviously that was something that spelled bad news for any survivors or would-be rescuers alike. With literally no idea what he was walking into, the redhead got himself fully equipped, and set out to have a look around. Honestly, with the worst case scenario having the consequence of losing a few hours, he figured not much could really go that bad.

When he arrived, he couldn't help just how giddy he felt looking at what was left of the plane. There were some large sections that were still mostly intact, and nearly the whole thing was burning. He knew the surrounding swamp would be fine, everything was far too constantly damp for the fire to really travel anywhere else, but that was okay. In front of him was the biggest fire he'd seen since he left Detroit, and for a few moments, those dancing orange-yellow lights were all that existed. Connal may not have had any hand in creating the show, but that wasn't going to stop him from enjoying it.

What was going to stop him from enjoying it was a startlingly loud sound, one he couldn't quite identify. It sort of sounded like some kind of messed up recording of a whale, which reminded him that he was very near where that big monster lived. Shotgun in hand, the Pyro edged towards the water, and just now noticed it didn't quite look the same as usual. Did it get hit with part of the plane, or something...? No, he reasoned, then it would have started screaming long before he arrived. Oh crap, there couldn't have been a second monster on the plane, could there?

The anguished wails of the creature still permeated the blood tinged depths as it shook its head to and fro. Pain and darkness flooded its senses. There was no doubt now - the tentacled spy had to die.

It could still sense the currents moving in the swamp; Anu's movement still created little disturbances in the still waters, and it gave the vengeful monster a general direction to snap in. It crashed blindly into the silty floor, inches from the hapless Spy.

Was there any stopping this thing?

Anu clawed forward, kicking up soft debris as he made for shallows. No legs, it didn't have any legs, he had to get on land.

With a rush of water Anu pulled himself out of the water, up a mossy bank. He kept going, dragging himself forward, ever forward. He was a bit too preoccupied to see the Pyro, but he himself was probably easy enough to spot, a splash of bright colours in the thick green.

He almost ran straight into a tree; wide tree, thick branches. Anu was exhausted, he knew he wasn't going to get very much further; so he went up. Claws dug into the bark and tentacles wrapped up as he began the unlikely escape plan of making like a squirrel.

DRAMATIC

Postby Tentacles » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:23 pm

The monster hoisted itself from the water as it sensed Anu's escape to the surface. It swung its head back and forth, unable to catch a whiff of its target.

Bellowing in frustration, the creature pointed its snout skyward. So its mark would live another day, it seemed. Shrill hissing filled the air as it slid backwards, resigning itself back to the black waters for the time being.

Anu was shaking as he watched it leave. Finally leave; he kept watching and hanging on, but the surface stilled and there was no sign.

Maybe it went off to lick it's wounds. It would be back; no place was safe. And he couldn't go far enough to get out of the beast's swamp and out of it's way.

He held on as long as he could, then gracelessly tumbled out of the tree and down onto the mossy ground. At least it was a cushioned landing; still, he laid just how he fell, too beat up to move an muscle. Perhaps he'd be able to heal from all this, his missing limb... but he'd lost limbs before. As long as he woke up again he'd count it a win.

Done pretty well for himself in that tussle. Anu smiled a little, then finally succumbed to blood loss; out cold.
