Order of Business (Intro, Closed)

Where everyone arrives. Arrival is not team-separate, and we trust you'll be able to figure out which you're on. We send supplies plus purchases every month, on the first. The original dock was destroyed, and the current one is still only half-finished, so you're dropped off a bit of a ways up the bank where its safer to land. Just don't get lost.
The team Warehouses also stand out near here, or at least used to. RED's is the only one still standing, while BLUs seems to have been burned to the ground. Or maybe exploded. Or both.

Josif looked up.

He had always been somewhat non-enthusiastic about boat trips. It was not as if he got sick (and considering the conditions here, it was more than plausible), it was just that he found nothing of interest in the trip.

But this was somewhat different. In his transfer to Swamp Rat, Josif was forced to take a boat trip through a less-than-comforting bog, and the... creatures that found solstice here were not one bit pleasant. More than once Josif found himself beating down a deformed monster that tried to overtake their boat. It didn't help that the transportation was a cheap, run down motorboat, re-purposed with a rowing paddle to navigate the swamp. Nothing had been killed yet, which could be considered a plus for both parties.

Looking up, Josif saw an odd, flat shape in the mist. His gut told him it was a dock, so he perked up and got ready to debark. To keep the flimsy boat afloat, Josif had to travel light, so he only took his unloaded weapons and two sets of ammo for the first trip. He was told he would receive his personal set of supplies and tools in the next supply boat. Until then, Josif would have to share ammo and materials with his new comrades at Swamp Rat.

The boat floated to a gentle stop at the dock, which Josif found to be nothing more than a set of weathered planks held up by crumbling wood posts. He carefully set up his weapons and ammo as if he were going to battle, and stepped off the boat. As if on cue, the fog parted to reveal a large base of operations. The boards that held it up didn't look as if they would do so for much longer. On a loosely nailed sign was the crude image of a scarlet-colored bomb, with the word "RED" painted in bold lettering.

This was to be his home for who knows how long? Josif could hardly believe this base was still occupied, much less standing. Presumably the BLU base was in no better condition, but that didn't matter to him. This base badly needed a makeover, and perhaps Josif would be the one to execute that.

Josif took a good look around, not that there was much to be seen. Nothing more than weathered trees, pungent water and strange plants to be seen (excluding the departing boatman). But then again, that wasn't what Josif was looking for; rather, he was trying to find someone who could guide him. There wasn't anyone around, not even people from his team.

In honesty, Josif had not expected to be greeted kindly, if at all. Because of the fog, it was notably hard to tell what time it was, but the coming darkness hinted it was probably close to the evening. If that was true, RED team would already be in bed, or at least close to the time. And perhaps the the doors would be locked, too, meaning he might not get in immediately.

Josif carefully walked down the pier, watching and listening closely. After the swamp monsters, he didn't want to take chances with anyone, human or otherwise. Once he got to the end of the pier, Josif straightened up. He looked around carefully, scanning an waiting for someone or someTHING to appear. But no, it was quiet. An ominous silence where not even the common creatures spoke.

He could barely stand it. Josif took a deep breath, sampling the air. There was a strange tang to the swamp's atmosphere, but it was breathable. Then Josif took another breath, this time to spout out a loud call:

"Hello!"

Josif began to think if that had been the best idea.

Anton was glad he had decided to practice outside for once, instead of remaining inside the base. The air, no matter how muggy and smelly, was much better than the mildewy rot filtering through the boards inside the rundown base, and for the first time in a while it felt like he could breathe easy. He part of him wanted to just sit down on a log and relax, but he kept his mind focused on the task at hand.

He was having quite a few troubles in moving across the terrain undetected; footprints in the mud, ripples in the water and creaking walkways seemed to make sneaking around almost impossible. But in the while he was out here, he felt like he was beginning to improve. He was glad to have a bit of challenge again.

A shout drifted towards him over the noise of the swamp. He paused, what idiot was going around yelling in this place? It could attract all sorts of attention, if not from the mercenaries currently inhabiting the land, then any number of dangerous animals that were looking around. He gave a little sigh and decided he might as well go and see who it is. He started off in the direction from which the call came, trying to be as quiet as possible, keeping to the shadows and staying on solid ground as much as possible, just in case the person was an enemy.

As soon as he came within sight of the docks, though, and saw the red uniform, he gave up any attempts of stealth, moving out into the open as he walked towards them. As he got a little closer, he gave a small wave to the figure.

Regretting his admittedly poor choice of yelling out into nowhere, Josif adjusted the supplies on his person. His shovel was moved into a more practical location should a brawl occur. He started out towards the shabby base when he swore he heard a noise. Perking up, Josif readied himself to load and unload his shotgun onto whatever appeared, but stopped when he saw the red suit.

It was a Spy. A allied spy, no less. Josif briefly tucked away the thought of drawing his weapons, and instead straightened out into a more casual stance. However, he was still ready to open fire should this Spy be a traitor. It was a far cry, but one could never be sure. Josif always recalled a motto an old Sniper once said:

"Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you meet."

Josif bound himself to these rules loosely, to the point of becoming less susceptible to traitors. But this was not the time for war methods; he had an ally now.

"Ah, hello. I apologize for the yell, but I was just nervous." Josif lamented. "More so than I would be outside of this dark swamp, really."

Josif held out a hand and with a lighter tone, said, "You may call me Josif. It is nice to meet you, Mr. ...?"

Postby Yuri Vanavich Karloff » Tue Sep 13, 2011 2:04 am

Yuri couldn't really tell himself why he was sitting in the woods, yet again, staring off into space as the insects flew past his face in complex, random patterns, a swarm of gnats shaping words and symbols in some sort of interpretive dance that not even the most astute biologist could decipher. Shaking the fistful of peanuts in his palm, Yuri stopped contemplating the universe to flick a single legume into his mouth.

Grinding his teeth together, one chomp at a time, he disposed of the poor little peanut down his throat, the old familiar taste distracting him from something he wanted JUST the TEENIEST bit more than peanuts. Flicking another one into his mouth, it hit his tooth with a loud pop, before falling elegantly on his tongue. And again his mind wandered back to what exactly the gnats were saying to him, how they were insulting him, complementing him, telling him about the weather.

Yuri was in the middle of chewing a third peanut, when suddenly he heard a noise off in the distance, it sounded like a man hollering for help. It was coming from the red docks, and it sounded like someone was worried. Hoisting his massive height up with a single grunt, leaning heavily against the tree, slapping the dust off of his pants bottom before letting out a loud, guttural roar, as if to say "I'm here, don't worry" as he ran toward the docks.

"DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA!" Roared the heavy as he ran through the trees, his long legs traversing so much ground, the long abandoned Rus warcry rattling in the back of his throat as he ran in great leaps towards the docks, leaping down the small hill to the banks in two great, leaf throwing bounds before he skidded to a stop at the bank. There was Anton, the young spy who was so kind as to give him a cigarette a few nights ago, though it still laid at the bottom of his trunk, unsmoaked but not unwanted.

Also there was another man, a soldier, holding bags and looking dumbfounded, as if he was in the middle of asking a question. Smiling his wide smile, the giant was happy to see that his friend was there accepting new persons, "Gn Markovic!!! How is going doing? Is we having fun with new members?"

Not a moment passed after his greeting when Josif heard a loud roar break through the atmosphere like a sledgehammer through a plank. He whirled around, drawing his shotgun before just as quickly sheathing it. A foolish yell had already attracted this kind of attention; just what monstrosity might a shotgun attract? Josif unfolded his trusty Market Gardener, adjusting it so the pick became the business end. Heavy tromps were heard from beyond the trees, and a silhouette began to materialize...

Josif readied an uppercut with the shovel, prepared to gut the monster while it charged and then flip it over him. A massive figure broke through the trees, and Josif just barely managed to stop himself. He had seen a red sleeve on this... human, it seemed, and manually forced his swing to a halt. Regardless, the man had stopped short of the would-be counterattack, but Josif didn't like giving bad impressions.

It was a RED Heavy, but somewhat different than the norm. He was COLOSSAL. A huge man with wide shoulders, arms as thick as masts, massive bear-like hands, and a body fit enough to outmatch the worlds greatest wrestler. Had it not been for the red shirt he wore, Josif would've considered a direct rocket to the face of this mammoth of a man. But like any sensible Heavy, the man seemed just as kind and controlled as he was large.

Josif refolded his shovel-pick and he listened to what the man said. So Anton was the Spy's name, eh? At least this saved Josif the trouble of asking, however informal this appearance was. Moreover, Markovic and this Heavy appeared to be friends, or at least good allies. Josif made a note of that; it might be helpful for plans. While he was at it, he also told himself NEVER to shout out in these kinds of conditions. Calming his heart rate, Josif found the gall to say, "Hey there, you really scared me with that entrance."

Josif straightened up. "I was just greeting your... friend, right?" Josif asked, motioning to the suited person now behind him. "I hadn't really thought anyone was out here, but then again, I shouldn't make assumptions." said Josif, shrugging and then nodding his head and saluting. "My name is Josif X. Arcson, RED mercenary transferred to Swamp Rat!" he announced before resuming a casual pose. "May I ask for your name?"

As he stepped out of the brush and onto the dock with a small squelch of mud, Anton couldn't help but agree with Josef. The swamps tended to give him an uneasy feeling, especially when he first got here, though he was getting more used to it the longer he was here. He chalked it up to being in such a secluded area, he had been in a city all his life and the isolation of the bases was nothing like he was used too.

He was about to take the man's hand when a gigantic roar blasted through the swamp, causing his head to snap around and the hand he had been reaching out with to go straight for his gun. He edged back a bit from Josef, who looked much more able at fighting than he ever could, and would be better to take that the thing on first, leveling the gun with the trees. If the Soldier went down he would have to make a run for it. He had heard a bit about the animals in the swamp, but this sounded like nothing that had been described, it's thundering steps were much to loud to be any normal sized animal.

He was getting ready to shoot when suddenly, not some giant animal or enemy, but Yuri, the giant heavy, burst through the trees. He blinked for a second to make sure he wasn't seeing things. And he thought Josef was crazy for yelling in the swamp. Yuri had just crashed through the swamp like a madman and was standing there and smiling like nothing had happened.

Hejust stared at him with a look of incredulousness was fixed on his face, even when he addressed him. This man had seemed so calm a few nights ago, and didn't seem at all prone to loud rampages though swamps.

(I was waiting for Yuri to reply again, but he hasn't yet, so I'll just go on...)

Josif took a glance at Anton, his helmet hiding his gaze to the spy. Anton looked like any other spy; red suit, mask, cigarette, all common things. Rather, Josif was trying to see what the spy thought of him by checking his expression. Clearly it wasn't a good thought, as his face was caught in a thoughtful, yet slightly contemptuous frown. Josif had made a bad impression, it seemed, and it didn't please either of the men standing there (he hadn't even yelled that loud, had he?). Josif always wanted to be on an ally's good side to allow for more friendly cooperation, but this didn't seem to be happening for Mr. Markovic.

After a second reminder NEVER to do such a thing again, Josif broke the glance and took a closer look at the RED base, or more accurately, what needed to be fixed. The sign was crude, but at least somewhat well painted; a couple more nails might keep it up longer. The boarded walls would never hold under direct fire, so those needed replacing. That was only for the outside look; Josif would have to take a tour around the base to see what facilities called for help. Any supplies for the job could be ordered for the supply boat to carry, to an extent. Contact to RED HQ might be necessary, but he doubted that would be necessary for remodeling.

But then another thought came to mind: Time. The ceasefire Josif had heard about would only last for so long, and the boat only came once a month. Plus, he didn't know who could work, and how well. Remodeling the base might be nigh impossible under these conditions. Perhaps, Josif thought, they could just reinforce the walls, if remaking them completely was out of the question. The inside facilities could be remodeled in spare time, as they would not be subject to direct enemy attack. Of course, that was only if the walls held...

It was a lot to think about, and in the presence of two other members, Josif didn't want to look spaced out. Of course, knowing himself, Josif probably already did, making himself look even more like a novice fool.

The scary part was, perhaps that is correct. He had only been alive for so long, after all...

"I am sorries.... I thought there was person being in pain, what with yelling. And screaming." Yuri looked to Anton, and again to Josif... This was awkward. Backing up slowly, he tried to walk as slowly as he could out of the situation. Gulping, the giant felt suddenly like he was in the throes of battle. His eyes went wide, and just as he was at the forest edge, he managed, "I am being called Yuri... Or giant... Or freak..." Before he walked away into the woods as quietly as he could.

((Sorry that short post is short, I literally had NO idea what to do.))

Anton gave a small sigh, shaking his head slightly, returning to his normal deadpan gaze. First impressions were hardly important in the grand scheme of things; he would have to watch both of these men for quite a while before being able to form a proper opinion about either. Quick judgements would get him nowhere.

He looked from man to man. It would probably be best to move this little greeting party inside the base: they were too out in the open here. But before he could pull out his paper, Yuri started backing away from them. He watched as the giant seemed to run away from them, retreating from the forest which he had burst from just a few seconds ago.

Well, he guessed he would make his own way back then.
