Ignis Solis (Open)

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

By this time, the Pyro's condition had worsened to the point where his skin had fallen off completely.

This was not a sensation he was entirely unfamiliar with. It wasn't as bad though. Not at all. Most of his nerve endings had died when his slippery skin did, but new nerves were starting to generate in their place, consistantly broadcasting the fact that oh gosh there's no skin here. The low-grade pain killers both Docs were giving him weren't cutting it, but the salamander would not DARE try to steal morphine from Niklas. The Medic had made it clear that was not appreciated. Besides, the doctor was his friend. Friends don't steal from eachother. He wasn't at that level of desperation(yet).

He was living in his suit again (a surprise to no-one who knew what was happening), and was hobbling through the woods with an obvious amount of pain and effort. He had several books tucked under his arm - not the best burning material for the kind of slow burn he wanted, but there wasn't a lick of dry wood to be found. No gasoline jars today - he wanted this to last.

He did find the place where the Soldier had killed him and the dogman, where he and the bigger Pyro had reclaimed this space in a celebration of explosions and drinking. This wasn't going to be that kind of fire. The arsonist set down the modest pile of books and started ripping out the pages and bunching them up, making them into more suitable kindling. Once he was satisfied with the assortment of crumpled paper and book covers, he lit it up.

The rush of warmth from the fire made his nerves scream even with the protection of the suit, but with the sight of the flames he was able to ignore it. The little Pyro sat by his modest fire, prodding it with a stick to encourage it.

Jericho had been avoiding the salamander ever since the man had started smelling like something that should be either on a plate or in the trash bin, his sensitive nose over powered by the smell of decaying meat every time he got within about 10 feet of the other Pyro. He felt kind of bad about it, James was a decent enough person, but the smell got him so badly confused he'd nearly bit the guy twice already thinking he was dinner.
But he was up on the second floor when he saw a fully suited Pyro go trundling off into the woods, and he hadn't seen Connal yet today, so it was really only logical that he go and double check on who it was, just in case his Master was in a not-good mood again about to do something stupid.

So, down he climbed, from common room to patio roof to the ground, trotting off after the sound of half-limping boot steps.
He recognized the clearing upon entering it, whining softly at the memory of having his neck and jaw broken before getting shot in the head.
Not fun...
An ear flicked towards the sound of crackling flames, and he turned to pad closer, only to halt mid-stride at getting a faceful of ground meat smell.
"...James?"

The scabby arsonist hadn't even noticed the chimera striding towards the flames until he called out. It was a little understandable that he was apprehensive about the other's appearance, considering Jericho had tried to take his fingers off. That had been a bad day. What the hell are you doing here, Jericho?

He had no particular malice towards the hybrid, but he wasn't exactly feeling himself as of late. His expression was inscrutible behind the featureless mask, but he did look up at Jericho briefly before returning his attention to the flames. If the hybrid stayed or went, he didn't particularly care; he just better not be expecting cuddles, that was for shit sure.

Fire.

There was a fire in the swamp.

Lan Feng could recognize that glow from a mile away. Someone was making a fire. Not a particularly large one, but a fire nonetheless. And knowing that there were only two other pyros, that meant a 50/50 chance of meeting the one she was familiar with.

Truth be told, Feng would've gone regardless of the fact. She had been trying to curb her fire setting habit, lest she light up something they really needed, and was itching for another fire, even if it was something small. She donned her own suit, tucking into the pouch on her belt some kindling, a pack of cigarettes, and a lighter.

She made her way towards the glowing light without bothering to hide herself, eyes on the fire the entire time. It didn't really matter at this point, did it? She couldn't bring herself to care. There was fire there, and that was all that mattered. As she made her way closer, leaves and twigs snapping underfoot, she could see by the small stature of the person in the suit that it was in fact James.

She raised a hand in greeting. "Hrrhoh."

James lifted his head again.

Oh god. Yes.

Someone who would understand.

As much as he liked Connal, he wasn't sure if the big RED would understand the pleasure of a quiet burning. But Feng, Feng had been setting a quiet little fire, a private fire, when he had met her. At the least, she would respect his need.

He just hoped she didn't mind mumble speak, the mask wasn't coming off for shit right now.

The scabby arsonist lifted a hand back, waving her over before gesturing at the modest flame. Of course they could share it.

Jericho perked up at hearing footsteps, having sat himself down a little ways away to keep from disturbing the smaller Pyro, and barked softly towards the new Pyro. Smelled different, newer and cleaner, though it was hard to tell over the heat of the small fire and the stench that continued to come wafting off James.
It was because of that worrying stink that the chimera wound up staying at all, remembering when he'd smelled something similar with Rufus and how the Medic had attempted to kill himself when the sickness got the better of him.
He wanted to keep an eye on James, make sure the salamander wasn't about to try something stupid like that.
Connal had lost enough friends already...

Lan Feng gave her fellow pyro an unseen smile, starting forward before coming to a sudden stop at the sight of something else moving nearby.

It was that dog-man-thing. She had remembered running into it when the teams had gotten together to kill the monster. She hadn't been sure what to make of it, this strange conglomeration of different animals awkwardly attached to a human frame. Its presence made her rather nervous, but she said nothing, simply following James' motion and taking a seat next to the fire. It (or was it a he?) had seemed rather indifferent to her then, and still seemed indifferent to her now.

She was still quiet after she had picked out a spot, simply staring into the warm glow of the flames. She felt better. Fire always made her feel better. Especially with someone else who understood it and enjoyed it just as much as she did. She reached into the pouch clipped onto her belt and pulled out the box of cigarettes. She took one for herself, pulling off her mask and putting it in her mouth. She held out the box in silent offering to the pair, a small smile playing on her lips.

James was going to have to politely decline. He held up a hand and waved off the offer as non-offensively as he could manage. "Nuh, nuh, uh dunt smuk." not since he had slippery skin, and he wasn't feeling too keen on lighting up when he was all Hellraiser.

He did turn his head with much more aggravation towards Jericho. Feng was a friendly, for god's sake. Though he supposed the two hadn't exactly been properly introduced. He gestured with his head towards the chimera. "Hu's alrught. Jhust bung prutuctuv."

A gruff sound somewhere between a noncommittal grunt and a bark, and the chimera settled down, head resting on his arms as he lay quiet on the other side of the fire, eyes at a sleepy half-mast while those big conical ears flicked and rotated, listening to everything around him, Pyros included.
A part of him wondered where Connal was, what he was up to, and was half-tempted to go find the ginger to join in the party, but he had a feeling that James hadn't invited Connal for a reason, so he stayed put.
Still, the absence kind of made him a bit antsy, an ear twitching towards the base in a fairly regular manner.

"Oh." Feng lowered her hand, placing the pack back into her pouch and taking out the lighter instead. She was about to light the cigarette when dog-man-thing let out a bark, dropping it on the ground. She felt her cheeks turn red from embarassment. Had she really gotten this bad, or was it just the situation itself?

She did calm down pretty quickly in response to James' reassurances that it wasn't going to bother her. She simply nodded and retrieved the fallen lighter and putting a flame to the cigarette. She was quiet for quite some time, simply content to stare into the nice little fire while blowing out smoke. Much better. Everything seemed calmer now.

After a while she turned and gave James a little smile, supposing she should at least try and break the silence. "I haven't seen you in quite some time? How are you? And has your team been well since we fought the creature?"

Everyone in this thread is Hanako

Postby Tentacles » Thu Oct 04, 2012 7:50 pm

How are you? There was a loaded question. He was going to assume she was being genuine, and that Gerhard hadn't spilled what was happening to him all over the base. How the Medic must have explained the smell and the mess must have been something else though. How is your team was somehow an even more painful question. The scabby arsonist wasn't ignoring her, but from the pause that permeated the air it was obvious those simple little attempts at small talk weren't easy to answer.

"Rhufus nuvhr ruhspund. Nuklus ush blund. Um..." he started prodding at the fire with a stick with a measure of agitation. Maybe she couldn't smell all the fresh blood in his suit over the fire, or maybe she was being polite? Either way, he didn't feel like explaining himself. "...um uhky." that statement seemed to be more to placate himself, and he returned to just idly nudging the flames, slumped over some more. "Ur yuh uhky?"

lets see how awkward we can make this thread

Postby Puffin » Sun Oct 07, 2012 7:58 pm

"Oh..." Lan Feng's gaze dropped once again to the fire in front of her. Here she was, asking about something so sensitive without a second thought. And it seemed not everyone had come back alright. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry." She had a strong feeling something else was bothering James, possibly related to why he hadn't taken his mask off yet. It would probably be best not to ask though. Especially not after bringing up a subject like that. Nice going.

"Me?" Her gaze briefly lifted as she took another drag. "I'm fine. I died too, but I came back okay." Pretty much everyone else had, as well. Everything on BLU was actually alright, creepy legless new doctor non withstanding. That hardly seemed fair. She wanted to say something to offer her condolences, but at the same time didn't want to press the issue. Should she apologize again?

IS THAT A CHALLENGE

Postby Tentacles » Sun Oct 07, 2012 9:00 pm

James shrugged through the suit, hoping the gesture was obvious enough. The hell was she apologizing for? She hadn't personally disemboweled and beheaded his team mates. "Nnr, ish alrught..." to be fair, he wanted to ask her how it happened. He was 75% certain the BLU was still alive when he got turned into a spinal cord accordion by the monster. For some reason it felt like a horribly impolite question, so he turned back to the fire.

He ripped a page out of one of the still intact books, a thick medical dictionary. He crumpled it up and tossed it gracelessly into the fire, the old paper quickly disintegrating into the flames.

Across from the pair of Pyros, Jericho found himself beginning to doze a little, the quiet muffled conversation and the white noise of the crackling fire combined with the pleasant heat allowing the chimera to relax. He yawned, mouth opening wide and unwittingly showing off his strange teeth before he shuffled a little onto his side and lay his head down more comfortably on his arm.

Lan Feng was quiet for a while, simply watching the fire, unsure of what to say. James seemed to have a similar problem, and the creature by the fire looked like it was about to fall asleep. There was something to be said for the calm atmosphere, simply enjoying the warmth and glow of the fire. But an idea did cross her mind as she saw James pick up a book from the pile and rip out a page.

She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should ask before taking a page, but realized if he was tearing it up, it probably didn't matter. She reached over and flipped to a fresh page, carefully tearing out a piece of paper so as to get an even rip. Once she was satisfied, she leaned back into her seat and began to fold the paper in a specific pattern.

curious and awkward and awkwardly curious

Postby Tentacles » Wed Oct 10, 2012 8:46 pm

The conversation had run dry, but the scabby arsonist didn't really mind. The fire was really all that mattered at this point, and as long as nobody did anything to extinguish it, it was all good.

And then Feng ripped a page out of one of his books.

No, it was completely fine as the book was doomed anyway, but he couldn't help but wonder what she was doing. Origami? Was it offensive to assume that? He didn't even know.

The inquiry was wordless, but clear: the RED was fixed on the page the BLU was folding up, watching.

Feng was folding something, but it wasn't a paper crane. Or any other animal, for that matter. After a few brief moments of folding, she held up the result of her handiwork: a small paper airplane. She wound her arm back and gave it a toss. The craft flew, but not for long, doing a full loop in midair before dive-bombing the earth a few yards away. Her technique had gotten rusty, so it would seem.

She chuckled, blowing out a mouthful of smoke and tossing her now spent cigarette on the fire. "I haven't made these since primary school," she said idly, stripping off her bulky rubber gloves. That would probably make things easier. She reached for the book again, beginning to tear out another page. "I'm sure you've made them before, though."

Well. This was oddly embarrassing. He had to shake his head at her assumption. "Uurh....nhut rully..." Of course he had SEEN paper airplanes before, tossed around classrooms in some foggy childhood memory, but he had never made one. Nobody to show him and no real inclination up until now.

Shit. Still couldn't take off his gloves though. Forget the whole nerves exposed to the fire/making Feng throw up issue, he was pretty certain whatever paper he did get his bare hands on would get soaked through with blood. Damned if he wasn't going to try, however.

The faint shuffling and crunch of paper being fiddled with had an ear twitching, and the chimera glanced up in time to see the little plane take its nosedive. It was a bit difficult to make out, the fire's flickering light and the distance making it difficult for him to catch on to what was going on, but he got the gist of it from the new Pyro talking.
Curious, he moved to stand, stretching languorously before he came padding around to be a bit closer and he could watch properly rather than give a guess, ears pricked up in obvious interest as he let his head rest on his crossed arms.

Postby Puffin » Thu Oct 11, 2012 8:40 pm

"Oh." She averted her eyes for a brief moment before looking back with a smile, continuing to tear out the page. "It's not too hard. Let me show you." Lan Feng pulled the page free, briefly casting a glance at the third companion that approached, hesitating at first but eventually turning so both of them could see.

"First you fold it in half like this, and then again like this..." She went through a series of instructions and folds, her small hands looking rather odd sticking out of the voluminous rubber sleeves of her suit. Before long, she had another plane in her hand, the folds looking more precise this time around. The aircraft was quickly unfolded back into a flat piece of paper and presented back to James. "Would you like to try?"
