Coping (open)

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

Despite how much he assured Jericho that he was fine, the continual disappearances of pretty much everyone was really starting to weigh on Connal, not to mention the fact that those that were still around seemed to more or less ignore him. Except, obviously, for the previously mentioned hybrid. Unfortunately, he didn't even have his promised job of setting people on fire to distract him. Hell, he didn't even really have fire. So he had been looking for something, anything to take his mind off of things, and the increasing amount of empty bottles sparked an idea. He would take as many as he could carry out into the swamp, and smash them up with his shotgun.

His chimera friend tagging along wasn't exactly part of the plan, but what could he do to stop him? He was basically a guard dog, and probably wouldn't stay behind even if ordered.

The Michigander tried to put it out of his mind as he set the duffel bag of bottles down, but that just made it easier for other thoughts to take its place. He remembered when he told Arseni that he would teach him how to fish. For the hell of it, he imagined that memory taking place inside of the bottle he then pulled out of the bag. That drunk Ruskie had just looked so damn excited at the idea... While unsuccessfully holding back a frown, Connal pitched the bottle skywards, brought up his shotgun, and fired. The mental image of the Demoman's grinning face shattered along with the glass.

Yeah, maybe it wasn't the best idea to have pretended the memory was inside there. He took the next bottle, trying to focus only on the task at hand. His uncooperative mind, however, instead chose to bring up the second RED he had ever met. No chance of ever showing that guy any television shows, now. This time the bottle hit the soggy ground with a soft smack, having only just been barely nicked.

It seemed that the first shot was a lucky one, because as time continued, Connal either nicked or missed more bottles than he shattered. Unlike what he planned, it wasn't really helping to take his mind off missing teammates. Things he agreed or had wanted to do with the others kept running through his mind. Having a drinking night with Will and Arseni. Asking Gene about that cake recipe. Challenging Yuri to a wrestling match, just for the sheer absurdity of it. Sharing his favorite music with Rufus.

Taking his brother bar hopping in Canada for his nineteenth birthday.

"Damn it," Connal cursed, somehow having managed to have a bottle land on his head. It didn't really hurt, but probably wouldn't have happened if he could just keep his mind on one thing instead of having it drift all over everywhere. Why did people have to keep leaving?

Jericho watched from afar as his Master fumbled and cursed his way through round after round of practice shooting, head resting on his folded arms and ears twitching with discomfort at each echoing report of the shotgun. With the supplies running at their lowest ebb between trains, he should have told the Pyro to save the ammo he was spraying into the air, they didn't know if they would be needing it to help take down the swamp monster, but...
He knew why Connal was out here.
And also knew there really wasn't anything he could do to help.

So many of their teammates had vanished in the past weeks, so many people that both he and Connal had befriended, despite his own misgivings. Most of them had been good people, friendly and fun to be around for their quirks and personality twists, though others had been more... Hostile. Then again, Tom hadn't been very friendly to much of anyone, hybrid or not. He just seemed to be more vocal about the hybrids.
But Mary.
He missed Mary, the pretty young Soldier woman. She'd made him sandwiches, and always knew the best spots to scratch (which she'd then taught to Connal, lovely girl).
Then there was Riley, the shy Sniperdile he'd become interested in the moment he realized there was someone else on the team who had a tail, who knew that burden. Sure, Riley had been wary of him and didn't really like him too much, but he counted the Sniper as his tail-buddy anyhow. Funny how he'd vanished all over again...

The chimera sighed, watching brown glass bottles flying through the air, wincing when one landed on Connal's head.
Okay, time to get this sorted out...
Heaving himself to his feet, the patchworked hybrid padded over to the Pyro, a barely perceptible limb in his pace. The bite wound was long gone, but some things tended to linger in the mind.

A blur of green amoung green leaves, and Henry dropped lightly out of a nearby tree-top, with a sattelite dish in his outstretched arms. Unfortunately, a trailing wire caught on the branches, ripping a portion of the dish apart, which proceeded to clatter onto the ground. "Gods damned..." With a swift kick, metal met metal and half of the dish flew out over the swamp, splashing down and scaring a small crowd of birds. With a swift turn, he suddenly noticed the pair. Striding over, he couldn't help but throw in his thoughts.

"I can give those bottles a good chuck, if you like. Wouldn't mind taking a few shots myself. That sound alright, big-guy?"

Connal didn't answer his quadrupedal friend immediately. He turned to face Jericho, downcast, all but kicking at the ground. "I... I gues- Whoa wadda shi'!?" Henry's sudden appearance startled him to the point of aiming and even firing at the friendly BLU. Thankfully, however, the ever-oblivious Pyro had run out of bullets and forgotten to reload. It did little for his own nerves. Of course, that Engineer just went about like falling out of trees on enemy lines (wait, they were still in RED territory, weren't they?) was perfectly normal.

"Jesus Christ, dude, I just almost shot you!" Connal shouted, deciding to ignore the man's offer. "The hell you even doin' out here? An' what's with that... uh, thing?" he asked, lowering the shotgun and pointing towards the torn satellite dish. Obviously redirection was better than talking about what was actually on his mind.

In all honesty, the chimera was just as surprised as his Master, having somehow missed or dismissed the Engineer's scent. He whirled and barked just as Connal attempted to fire, back arched and thin fur fluffed in as his wings flared, attempting to making himself look bigger. He was understandably quite embarrassed by this, seeing as he prided himself on his sense of smell.
Had the Engineer really been around enough to be labeled a non-entity/friendly to his senses...?

"Hell kid, what's got you so friggin' jumpy? Don't you have a dog-man just for such occasions? Not that he's much more calm than you or anything." Picking up what scrap he could of his beloved dish and mournfully hurling it as best he could into lower orbit, with the mild hope of hitting a company facility, he was rewarded by a splash and a flock of birds.

Damnit...

"Kind of a failed attempt at entertainment, I guess. I swiped an old computer out of the town way back when, and I've been trying to get an internet connection for the last week. As it turns out, reception in swamp-lands consists of FUCK ALL. So, y'know. Fuck. Gonna have to set up a whole broadcast system just to get radio outside of a five mile radius." Pacing over, he gave some rocks an absent minded kick, more for the sake of seeing them roll than anything. "I'm sure that's something you'd appreciate, eh?"

It was just plain weird to be carrying on a conversation like this with a BLU. Especially since everyone was completely sober, so no chance of lying his way out of this one. As for what the Engineer was actually saying... A tiny satellite dish... for the internet? What? Brow furrowed in confusion, Connal asked, "Why don't you just use the phone lines like a normal person...?" Of course, if BLU's base was anything like RED's, there would be only one phone line, and if Henry used it for an internet connection, they wouldn't be able to get in contact with their company while the internet was in use. Then he brought up radio. The metalhead couldn't deny the fact that he would definitely love to have the chance to be reunited with any radio station that he could actually give a shit about.

But there was still the fact that RED's business was RED's, BLU's business was BLU's, and the only time they allowed to overlap was when they were supposed to be killing each other. Which they haven't even been allowed to do since they started sending people back out there. "I... I guess, yeah." What was Connal even supposed to do at this point? Threaten him? Reload and start firing? Sic Jericho after him? He had no idea.

The chimera was trying to make it look like he hadn't been spooked by the Engineer, huffing and sitting down at Connal's feet with his shoulder towards the BLU, giving the man a sidelong look rather similar to a severely irritated cat. If the others hadn't been there, he might have even gone to the extent of grooming his fur back down flat, but that was something he really didn't like to do when others were around to watch...
An ear twitched, and the hybrid frowned.

"Um... It's kinda. Crap." He was honestly dumbfounded as to how to go about explaining this to someone who had probably never even worked a computer. Faced with this perplexing issue, he reverted back to his standard italian format; emphasizing everything with sweeping hand motions. "It's basically... If you think of a computer. You take that computer, and connect it to another computer and you get a network. So, the internet is like taking EVERY COMPUTER and making a network. I guess..."

An overwhelming urge suddenly came over the poor man, and he had to ask a stupid question. "On a side note... Can I, maybe, pet you a little bit? Please?"

It was a shame, Connal thought, that they didn't have an internet connection out there. They could probably get a read on anyone that actually just transferred out and didn't tell anyone, so there would be at least a few less people to wonder about. Plus, they could always use another way to kill time. The Pyro shifted his weight, more than a little out of his element. Henry wanted to pet Jericho, now? He looked down to his hybrid friend and gave a shrug. If the chimera was up for it, he supposed it couldn't hurt. Still felt fairly strange.

At first, Jericho simply cocked his head, really not understanding the whole computer concept the BLU Engineer was attempting to describe (what the heck was a computer?). Then-
WHAT.

The chimera stared, an expression somewhere between disbelief and disgust imprinted upon his features, ears laid flat to either side of his head.
Had Henry just...?
Snorting, the patchworked hybrid stood, taking a few steps back and one to the side, sitting himself behind his Master.
If Henry couldn't take the hint, it was his loss.

"Well, I guess there's your answer, then." Perhaps he really should reload, if Henry was getting to Jericho, now. Really, Connal would have probably gotten along very well with the man, had they been on the same team. The fact that he knew this was just frustrating. He shifted weight from one foot to the other, thinking this whole situation rather unfair. There he was, trying to get out his feelings on how everyone he had considered a friend, aside from the one standing behind him, were all gone, and right in front of him was someone he could easily get along with but wasn't allowed. It wasn't fair.

But that was Swamp Rat, he supposed.
