In Comes The Mutant

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

It took a good few moments for the chimera to come to himself, more focused on catching his breath and staying above water than what was going on around him, but that sharp sound tearing through the already tense atmosphere worked quite well to jerk him out of his near-panicked stupor. Jericho's ears flicked around, shortly followed by his head, and though it took him a second to work out just what exactly was going on, those grumbles from Josif filled him in pretty well.
This was a mess, a big awful nasty mess that needed to be dealt with, and fast, before something caught wind of the commotion and figured a meal wasn't too far of a possibility.

Unlocking himself from around the Soldier's waist, the patchworked hybrid shuddered as he splashed down on all fours, the water coming up to his neck. Ugh, he was going to be hiding under Connal's bed after this, wrapped up in as many towels and blankets as he could get a hold of...
Slogging his way closer to shore so he could get a better footing, Jericho got himself turned around, ears helping him zone in on his target.
A sharp bark was the only warning Josif would get before the big chimera used his powerful legs and heavy tail to launch him at the struggling crocodile-man, tackling the smaller, slighter Sniper with his formidable bulk into the deeper water.

Being strangled to death seemed to be no deterrent to the Sniper; if anything it made him struggle harder. He was eerily silent however, conserving his limited supply of air for his thrashing. A burning pain in his chest told him how quickly that precious air was running out and spurred on another burst of kicking mouth open in a silent scream.

Tackled by the massive chimera and painfully dragged out of the RED's grip saved him from one mode of choking an subjected him to another, gasping for breath when he simultaneously hit the water, swallowing a mouthful of water when his head dipped down under. Hacking violently, the sniper punched at Jericho's face and chest, finally opening his mouth to speak.

"STOP!"

Hearing the bark from Jericho, Josif turned his to find the chimera rushing into the Sniper again, slamming him from Josif's grip and into the deep water. The thrashing of chimera and Sniperdile in the swamp mire began anew. Josif's first thought was, Darn it, Jericho, I thought you would've learned from that first time, and the second thought was, Oh, crap, better get those two out before they drown!

Josif dove deeper into the water and reached for two hybrids, pulling them apart from each other again. This time, his weakened state required much more effort to peel the two fighters away from each other. The Soldier had almost got the two away when the Sniperdile screamed his command.

With that, Josif gave one last tug and hoisted Jericho and the Sniper onto either of his sides, with his arms holding them steady. Finally, the Soldier could not withhold the comment, "Dammit, you two, I'm just trying to rescue a trapped teammate. Can I do that without you both trying to kill one another?" And yourselves, while you're at it, Josif added internally. With the two hybrids at last seeming to calm down, Josif stepped out of the water and onto shore. Hopefully, the Croc-Sniper would have enough sense beaten into him at this point.

Jericho did his best to keep from truly harming the long missing Sniper, doing everything he could to keep his claws from digging in as he struggled to restrain the crocodile man. Even when the marksman lashed out, flailing hard punches that slammed into his jaw and nose and thumped against his ribcage, causing a bloody nose and more than a few cracked ribs, the chimera refused to strike back.
He liked Riley, Riley was a teammate, a fellow hybrid, his tail buddy-
He just wanted the Sniper to stop trying to run away...

When Josif came in for them the second time, the chimera didn't resist, letting himself be dragged up out of the muck by the chainlink of his collar even though it hurt. He coughed, sopping wet hair dangling in his eyes, his ears drooping so low he practically mimicked a lop-eared rabbit. It was more than obvious that the patchworked hybrid was beyond miserable, and when Josif yelled at him, he visibly slumped, whimpering softly.
"...Don' wanna hurt tail buddy..."

Soaked to the bone Riley coughed violently, catching his breath after a brief brush with drowning. The previously tight grip on his neck may not have left bruises but it lingered and made him wheeze in the most pitiful way possible. He was no longer anger, only tired and frazzled. Curling up in a dark corner and sleeping off his confusion sounded lovely right. The REDs words sounded familiar and had he listened Riley would have been able to make them out, fully understand them. Something he thought he'd forgotten. In the heat of his fighting it had clicked in his brain and spouted words forth.

Groaning, he made no effort to break free, regarding the chimera calmly. A drastic change from his ruthless attitude before but as the mutant posed no threat to him, there was no need to begin growling and swiping at him. There would be peace for now.

With the rush of strength subsiding, Josif sighed, letting his grip loosen just the slightest. With that over, it was time to get the two back to base. Even if he had to carry them back.

"Alright..." Josif started, shifting his grip on the two hybrids. "If either of you are well enough to walk on your own back to base, say so now. Otherwise, I'll be heading through the front door with one or two hybrids tucked under my arms." Not that it's an issue either way, but it saves a bit of effort on my part, Josif thought.

The chimera huffed, both to get water out of his nose and to answer the Soldier, shuffling to get his feet under him.
"Can walk. Not hurt bad..."
Okay, so his breathing was kind of wheezy and he had a small river of blood trailing down his face from his nose, but his legs worked just fine-! At least, he hoped so. Riley sure could toss some good punches when he felt he needed to...

Riley had no issue with walking on his own if only the RED would release him. Kicking faintly, he wriggled weakly in the grip on the remnants of his shirt collar. He would walk with the two for a time and slip away when they were distracted. It was not a plan he liked but that was irrelevant. Once he was away from these two he would never have to worry about RED or BLU or any colour nonsense every again.

Content that both of them were able to walk on their own, Josif set the two hybrids on (somewhat) dry land. Jericho looked a bit scuffled, but he would recover fine. Just a bloody nose. The Sniper-dile, on the other hand, needed medical attention; something he wasn't sure Rufus may be able to give immediately. The crocodile hybrid was bleeding profusely from his wounds earlier, but although they'd been washed out, it was with swamp water of questionable hygiene. And from how he reacted at first, Josif wasn't sure the Sniper was quite ready to be with what counted as the RED Team here, despite the fact that Jericho must've knew him well.

"Jericho," Josif said to the chimera, "keep close to your 'tail-buddy', and keep an eye on him. He needs help, and I'd rather he not run off and refuse it." The Soldier wasn't the best at paying attention to his surroundings at times. A chimera with dog-like senses, however, stood plenty of chance of keeping track of the Sniper-dile, even if the water had washed off the blood and scent.

And by God, this Sniper was gonna get help whether he wanted it or not. It was hardly even a matter of what team he was on anymore; this croc-man had enormous wounds drenched in swamp mire, and his health was only going to go downhill if he wasn't recovered.

A short nod and a gruff bark were the Soldier's reply as the patchworked hybrid moved to take up an escort position, stepping up behind the Sniperdile where he could easily keep an eye on the man and pounce on him should he attempt to make a break for it.
"Sorry Riley, it's for your own good."
Gods above, he could only hope Rufus was in good enough shape to get the injured crocodile man the medical attention that he so obviously needed.

He was being surrounded, the RED on one side the hybrid behind him and did not like it a soft growl budding from his chest. There was no place to run now and, defeated, he stood up on his feet, wobbling from the unfamiliar stance. It hurt his back to stand so straight. Riley slouched over, arms hanging loosely in front of him. It was bad to go back to the base, bad bad bad, so bad. Escape would be hard but he had to try or die doing it. He'd not be caged up in the tight corridors of the base.

Gaze darting between the men Riley grunted, his voice lost again.

{Josif is currently off traveling and may not be able to post for a while, so we can consider this a free-for-all posting sequence from here on in}

Jericho whined softly, his ears dropping at the Sniperdile's growl, but he didn't back down, nudging his head against the other hybrid's tail to encourage the man to move. He was the guard dog, the protector- It felt wrong to have to resort to this...

[Okay! Sorry for the delay, I'm being buried in homework. Again ;^;]

The contact was unwelcome and Riley whirled on Jericho, hissing down at the chimera. He drew back, balancing briefly on the arch of his heel and stumbling back, tail smacking the ground, the smack it should have made muffled by the grass. Riley wanted nothing to do with the hybrid and he was sure to make that clear. Giving the chimera a good view of his back he trudged after the RED, walking painfully slow on two feet. Four would be so much easier but ultimately, still slower than two. He would endure it for now and keep quiet.

The chimera flinched, swallowing a whimper as he fell back a pace, not wanting to get snapped at again. To the eyes of the Soldier at their flank, he probably looked quite a lot like a beaten dog, head bowed and ears drooping as he padded along behind his fellow hybrid.

It didn't take too long for the group to reach the base, quiet for the moment with most of the team occupied with their own activities, and Jericho padded up beside the Sniperdile, gently nudging the man towards the Infirmary. Even if Rufus wasn't in residence, he and Josif could at least get Riley's injuries cleaned and bandaged. He could only hope that none of the wounds requires stitches...

Josif watched the exchange of what could thinly be considered conversation between the two hybrids, and felt a twitch of annoyance. The Sniperdile had clearly been gone a long time for him to revert to such feral instincts (despite the walking on two legs part). Perhaps his outlook on the mercenaries really was quite skewered. But maybe it was just a matter of building up trust again: A bit of therapy from the local Medic and some nice treatment from his teammates, and the Sniper would be willing and ready to work with them again, if not fight.

But then again, it was hard to tell. Josif wasn't exactly the best animal person. But he wasn't stupid, either: This animal didn't want their help, but he was gonna get it. Josif poked into the base, spotting the Medbay on the right side of the hall and pushing open the double doors.

"Rufus, we could REALLY use your help," the Soldier clearly said into the room.

((ooc: since this is just before his major illness and getting mother hen'd by Ger...))

The Medic was in the middle of self injecting a pain killer in the side of his hip. Thankfully, despite being spooked Rufus prevented from breaking the needle into his skin. "Vhat do you vant!? I'm a tad busy Herr Soldier and I really don't vant to be disturbed!" He shouts, removing the needle and hiding away the small exposed patch of inhuman pink skin.

Turning his wheelchair around and approaching closer, he stops when he sees what's been drag into the doors alongside Jerchio. His eyes widen and hands turn into fists on the armrests. He gives Josif a 'are you serious' gaze before finally shaking his head. "Nein! I don't vork on... freaks." He hisses, trying to lean back far away as if the poor sniperdile was rabid or carried the plague.

The doctor's abrupt response to the Sniperdile's presence prompted an equally abrupt and rather violent reaction from Jericho, the chimera seeming to freeze a moment before he broke in a deep growl, ears flipping back against his head as he bared every single sharp tooth in his head. As if to further emphasize his irritation, he shifted and rose to his feet, looming over Riley's shoulder and glaring down at the Medic.
Even if Riley didn't much like him right now, he was NOT going to let his tail buddy remain hurt, especially with the high possibility of him getting worse.
A heavy scaled tail curled protectively around the slightly smaller hybrid. Hopefully it would be reassuring...

Josif resisted the urge to strangle the doctor right there and then. He could understand the crossness, the disablement, perhaps the small air of insanity about the man. But plain refusal to heal, out of racism? That's where it hit the line.

Crossing his arms and donning a dark frown, Josif started, "A freak? And you look at me like I'm the crazy one." Josif took a moment to take a brief chuckle, then disposed all lightheartedness and seized the Medic by the collar, dragging him forward slightly. "You'd know a lot about freaks, you gene-splicing bastard. This trash pit is where they all go, and I figure you must've done something real bad to get yourself dumped here," the Soldier spat, an angry scowl pained on his face.

His next tug on the doctor almost pulled him out of the chair, the blanket nearly falling aside but still hiding the lower half. Acting ignorant to it, Josif continued with the verbal assault. "So if you're not willing to help a dying, long-lost teammate just because he's no different, I'll make sure you'll be even worse next time Respawn coughs you up." As a final threat, Josif brought the Medic's eyes to his and growled out, "IF it coughs you up, that is."

His streak over, Josif lightly shoved the hybrid doctor back into his wheelchair and folded his arms once more. One part of the infantryman doubted the death promise would register to the Medic. He shrugged it off: any sensible man would know it at this point. But this doctor may just be neither sensible, nor a man.

[ School is still stressing me out and my brain is fired so this is all I can conjure up. ]

Riley was very much out of it on their walk back, his walk meandering back and forth yet kept to the small group. The foliage gradually opened up with man made structure coming into sight, dampened by the sheer wetness of the swamp. Nothing looked familiar but he still tried to make a map of where they were going, passing massive- what he thought were- battlements and then into the barracks. Floor that did not sink beneath his feet felt strange and he pressed one shoulder to the wall as they pressed in on him from all sides.

The smell changes to something he doesn't like and makes him hesitate in the entryway with soft hissing. There's another human too who smells not quite so human, more like a fish. He cannot see anything different about this Medic and stares from a safe distance, undisturbed by the harsh tone directed toward them. Aggression from the Soldier startled him and Riley draws back, watching despite the growling that could be mistaken for an outward threat.

Jericho's growl cut off with a soft grunt as the Sniper-dile stepped back into him, a bony elbow poking him in the ribs. It hurt, quite a bit actually, but he ignored the pain to turn his attention to his fellow hybrid, murmuring a soft questioning sound before he huffed and shifted his body to better shield and protect his friend, a hand coming up to rest on Riley's shoulder in a gesture he dearly hoped would be found comforting.
Part of him wished that Connal were here, knowing the Pyro was much better with the social end of things, but also knowing that the croc-man wasn't exactly running on all cylinders at the moment. Better to keep his kindly Master from getting hurt...
