In Comes The Mutant

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

In Comes The Mutant

Postby Riley O'Neil » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:10 pm

He was back and he didn't want to be back.

That was why he left! But now, his leg and tail were snared in what he dimly remembered to be a snare trap and it was painful. Riley didn't want to even begin to struggle again with how far it had cut into his leg and tail; he was in so much pain that calling for help had long since faded from his priorities. He was hungry to, stuck too long in place by this damned thing to go out and eat and he couldn't remember the last time he eaten. Groaning, he raised his head, cracked aviators perched on the very end of his nose, barely clinging to around his ears.

It was so hard to think with an empty stomach. Maybe if he called for help again, screaming nonsensically in the direction of activity he'd been listening to for a few days now.

If an avid listener tuned out the surrounding sounds of the swamp, that listener would be bombarded by an ultimately eerie silence. Beyond that, they would hear a distinct, cracked yell of someone truly in suffering, and, less noticeable, a rough trio of throat-gouging coughs. The yell was of an unidentified, possibly human-like creature in the woods, whilst the cough erupted from the lungs of a certain Soldier.

He was Josif X. Arcson, a weary RED-Team infantryman out exploring where he likely shouldn't be. This was at the evident defiance of both common sense and recommendations of both RED and BLU members, being overpowered by the urge to discover. It was Josif's urge to discover what was wrong with not only the swamp, but with him as well. This cough of his seemed to extend beyond the limits of a common cold or flu, and the medicine he was given only offered the opposite of improvement.

The horrid, raspy shout offered a welcome distraction from his own pains, and after discerning a direction, Josif set off in search of the yell's source. Despite how many people RED supposedly had remaining, the base was seeming a lot more like a silent grave than their supposed housing.

Riley's yelling faded before a coughing fit silenced him altogether and he laid his head back down, dejected. If only he could get free and back into water everything would be alright. One last try to free himself. Once pushed up on his elbows, he reached down and struggled to hook his fingers around the wire but merely ended up scratching his skin and clothes with chipped claws. That made him growl in agony and put his hand down, emitting soft little snarls. That wasn't going to work, no matter how much he tugged and pulled and besides, his fingers felt too clumsy for something like that.

Resisting the pull of total fatigue, the Sniper looked up, sniffing the air. There was the faint smell of smoke somewhere, too much to be a fire. A cigarette? An old memory, one of slippery spies and back stabs rose up and he bristled, hugging and ground and growling low in his throat. Whatever was about to happen along, he was ready for it.

Not a few moments after Josif began to track down the voice, and a faint, but obvious growl was heard, from the same direction, no less. That eliminated the option that the source was human; at the least, it would be only part-human, not unlike the other hybrids on the base, but nothing like the unearthly creature he had been killed by. Since that incident, Josif's scar around the neck was a reminder to always bring his shotgun into the depths of the swamp. But the new local fiend hinted at the need for much bigger guns. Not even an armed Heavy may be enough, Josif thought, if that thing is worse than what caused the scar.

Another growl snapped Josif out of his thought. Hopefully, whatever this thing was would be much easier, the infantryman reasoned, drawing his shotgun now. Carefully, slowly, Josif proceeded further into the woods. Should I risk it? he thought. Obviously, if he had to ask, he shouldn't. But Josif did it anyways, softly speaking out:

"Hello?"

'RED. Not a Spy— a Soldier. What is he... why?'

Raising his eyes to the armed man, his gaze darted back and forth from his face to the shotgun in his hand, old and rusted gears slowly turning in his mind. This was a fellow RED, whatever that meant, so he shouldn't be an enemy. The tatters of his own RED uniform still clung to him and identified him for who he was, or had been. Riley loosely reasoned in the space of a few seconds that maybe he wasn't RED anymore as he hadn't been in the base for...quite some time. A very long time in fact.

The disjointed mess of thoughts that passed for Riley's mental process now began to pick up steam, startling even him after months of sharp, clear instinct. Snarling viscously in response to the RED's noise, the Sniper raised himself on both arms, baring his teeth in warning. The weapon was bad and until it went away he didn't want to be approached.

Josif entered the space in which the victim was yelling from. Almost immediately, he was "greeted" with a growl and a threatening snarl of crocodile teeth. Josif, half on instinct and other half in surprise recoiled at the sight. It seemed human enough: the general body was humanoid, but many minor features bore evidence of crocodile augmentation. Scaly patches of skin showed on his fingers and face, and probably elsewhere as well. The eyes were green and large, and his maw was lined with sharp teeth, a mix of croc and human features in them. The most obvious thing was the crocodile tail, which was, along with one leg, snagged in a vicious snare trap.

Gun still in hand, in case the thing was still mobile, Josif slowly circled around the hybrid. The trap was cutting into the creature's limbs, showing that he had struggled to get free multiple times. As the man-croc peered at the Soldier, Josif noticed scraps of dull, dirtied red cloth hanging from his body. The thought clicked and Josif, wide-eyed, jumped back another foot.

This was a missing RED!? A mutant, crocodile-man? And from the loosely-hanging badge on his arms, a Sniper, too. But Josif had never seem him before, which couldn't meant that he'd been stuck here longer than the Soldier had. Good god, that thing must have been forced onto death's door!

Thoughts of defense left the infantryman's mind as he tossed the shotgun aside, quickly pacing over to tear the croc free of the trap. Josif pulled a knife out of his combat boots, hurriedly attempting to cut the wires apart. If worst came to worst, then he'd send the Sniper through Respawn, but most would like to avoid that, in the machine's current state.

Being circled did not sit well with the mutant and he balanced with some difficulty on three limbs gripping at the muddy swamp ground. There was no sign of aggression from the RED though the jump did startle him enough to let out an odd combination of a scream and bellow which died quickly at no sign of attack. It still had his heart going and Riley twitched when approached, tensing visibly when touched. Somehow, he fought back the urge to bite, watching closely as the RED's hands worked to free him.

The snare gave way under the knife and Riley made to bolt, limping while the feeling began to come back to his leg and saved himself from falling over by grabbing onto a tree's trunk for support. He didn't linger or give the RED a glance; Riley kept limping away, heading for the body of water just over the mossy hill the tree was perched on. He wasn't going back, not on his life.

The trap gave way quickly, and as it was almost in tatters, the Soldier sheathed the knife and tore the thing open with grand force that betrayed the weakness in his body. The tail and leg pulled free, and Josif turned, aiming to carry the weak Sniper back to base. But his gaze instead met with the sight of the crippled hybrid limping horridly in the direction of the water.

"Oh. no you don't," Josif breathed in a challenging tone, and lunged after him, working against his aches.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the swamp's forest, a devastating creature prowled through the area. Possible prey had all the sense to run elsewhere, and what wouldn't? The fiend was a literal monster, a manmade creation built to kill. But regardless, it had to eat, if meagerly. Then a sense snapped into attention: the smell of blood, rather fresh. Instantly, the beast dashed after the source, less than a mile away. And yet, it would make it in a couple of minutes.
{because Ry'burr is back and I am screamingly happy, CAN'T RESIST!!}
It was the smell that caught his attention.
Having taken up patrolling to keep himself occupied while his Master was off doing his own thing, the chimera had wandered a good ways from the base, following a curious set of tracks until his sharp nose picked up a strong and surprisingly familiar scent.
Pausing, he stood fully upright, inhaling a deep breath through his nose to make absolutely sure before grinning to himself and bolting through the undergrowth, uncaring of the noise he was making as he tore towards the scent.
He knew that scent, he knew that person-!
Jericho burst through the undergrowth in a small explosion of leaves and grass with a happy sound somewhere between a bark and a yell, all but tripping into the crocodile hybrid, ears pricked up as far as they could go and his tailtip wriggling so much it was making his whole tail move.
"Riley!"
[Aw you guys <3 It's good to be back!]
Glaring over his shoulder he snarled and only limped faster, the greater pressure he put on his leg slowing him down. It was frustrating and he dropped to his hands and feet to overcome the hill. The tree roots proved to be excellent handholds to help pull him along and on three feet he was quicker. Descending down the slope was the tricky part and he mostly slid down, scrambling to brace his heels and palms into the dirt.The water was so close but, of course, things did not seem to go his way.
Crashed into by the chimera and tumbled over, Riley bellowed in defense, rolling himself up right and staring down another person he dimly recognized. Either way, the hyrbid was in his way and a Soldier gaining on his heels. Riley wouldn't let up with his display.
[Jericho isn't quite what i had in mind but okay this will work]
In pursuit of the Sniper, Josif quickly stumbled through the brush and came upon the sight of the team chimera on top of the Croc-Sniper. What's more, Jericho looked overjoyed, his tail wagging furiously like a pleased dog. Josif cracked a smile and nodded at the two, but then noticed that the Sniper was still struggling. At that moment, the Soldier also considered his shotgun, still abandoned in the clearing with the trap. Better that someone not come across it for their own purposes... not that anyone would, likely. Josif would go after it later.
But first things first, these two were getting back to base, especially the Croc-Sniper. He would definitely need some treatment from the Medic, perhaps a few Medigun fumes for a healthy boost.
Jericho winced, ears flipping back at the volume of the sound that came from the other hybrid, but he didn't let that get him down, bounding over to the crocodile-man and ducking down to but his head gently against the Sniper's elbow, offering himself as a support to help his teammate up.
"Hi."
He was fighting the urge to grab up the long-missing hybrid in a hug, remembering how shy and skittish the Sniper was and desperately wanting to try and keep from scaring the man. They never had gotten off on the right foot, not really, though the chimera tried. Goodness, how he tried-!
Being touched by the chimera only agitated Riley more and his snap at the hybrid made an audible snap, swiping at him for good measure. A look up the hill showed the Soldier was catching up. Pulling back, the sniper scampered into the water and disappeared underneath with a flick of his tail. He had to get as far as possible as fast as possible; only problem was, as a quick swim around revealed, it was a closed body of water. His panic of entrapment set back, sending his heart racing and he swam directly into the ground, rolling about in search for a way out. The water was deep and murky enough to hide him but there was no way out with surfacing. Risking being caught was too much of a risk so the sniper continued to roll about at the bottom, kicking up additional mud.
[[I suggest laying another trap or pouncing on him]]
"Well, dammit."
The final curse emitted from Josif's mouth as he came up alongside the hybrid Soldier. "Guess the man- er, croc-man really doesn't trust me," he lamented further, "And a shame it's that way, too. He's starved, wounded and can't think straight." If the team couldn't bring help to this Sniper, he would die the slow, painful way, and Josif didn't want to risk that in Respawn's state.
"...Well, at least we know where he'll be now," Josif thought out loud, looking over the water. Mud was being kicked up from below, likely from the Sniper. "But I'm also worrying what else is in there." Although he wasn't sure if Jericho was listening, Josif still thought the info would benefit them both.
Caught completely off guard by the sudden swipe from the normally passive marksman, Jericho yelped and scrambled back, tripping over his own tail in his haste. The chimera scrambled to collect himself, shoving himself up to his feet and shaking himself before realizing that the Soldier was talking.
An ear flicked up, then both drooped before flicking forward, and he growled low in his throat as he lowered himself back down onto all fours.
He did not like water.
Water dulled his nose, dragged him down, made him vulnerable...
But this was Riley, a teammate and someone whom he had marked as a friend from Day 1, hurt and scared.
Jericho snorted, his ears flipping back as he cautiously approached the water's edge, listening for the source of the splashing commotion as he hunkered down on the bank, his body tense.
He focused intently on the water, brow furrowed as he tried to pick out moving limbs from the blur of moving water and stirred silt. Several moments of watching and listening, and he pounced, lurching forward in a motion similar to a cat trying to fish as he struggled to find and grab onto the flailing croc-Sniper.
Pounced from above with no warning other than an ominous shadow. Had he been above water, Riley might have screamed had he been above water. His mouth opened all the same and the mutant latched onto his fellow, snapping and clawing at whatever he could reach. Jericho was significantly heavier than him but that wouldn't stop the Sniper from trying to wrestle him over so he could spin into a death roll and drag him under. His intentions were to incapacitate the mutant but as to whether or not he died was of no concern to Riley. The Sniper simply wanted to flee back to the dark safety of the swamp as before.
Now most assured that Jericho had, in fact, NOT been listening, Josif crept up to the water's edge. The chimera couldn't swim, clearly, and the two hybrids were quickly tearing each other apart. But for their benefits, neither of them had to be the victor of this brawl. But it would be hard, wrangling two mutants to quit fighting, especially when one of them hated you and the other feared you. Josif took a deep breath, reassuring himself, thinking, It's just like breaking up a fight, back in school...
Oh, Josif almost wished he could go back to those simpler days.
But the Soldier strode into the water, and where the water reached his lower torso he found the two hybrids fighting. With careful, precise timing, like snatching a fish out of a tub, he clamped around each of their necks with a strong hand. The next movement tightened the grip further, putting Josif's thumb and fingers to where he could choke either hybrid with relative ease (though he didn't want to). One last jerk of his arms and the hybrids' heads became level with the Soldier.
Oh god, bad idea, Josif thought as his arms quickly lost strength, and one of the hybrids, knocked out of his surprise, began to struggle loose.
Not expecting such a violent reaction to his attempts to drag the Sniperdile to the surface, Jericho yelped, ears pinning flat to his head as he struggled to keep above water as much as he could. Which wasn't much at all, as muddy water splashed on his face and up his nose, causing him to cough and splutter before he was abruptly dragged under with a startled gurgle. His wings immediately sprang open, the small leathery appendages messily stirring the water as they flapped and fluttered, trying to pull him back to the surface.
By the time Josif intervened, the chimera had switched goals entirely, going from attempting to grab his fellow hybrid to figuring out any and every possible way to get out of the water as fast as physically possible.
Which resulted in the Soldier being used very much like a tree as Jericho dug his claws into the man's uniform pants and practically climbed his teammate, mismatched eyes wide in something very near panic as the chimera fought to escape the water's grasp. He wound up hugging the Soldier's waist, chest heaving as he struggled to breathe, water dripping down his face.
Once his teeth had snagged on Jericho's uniform, Riley didn't let go, jerking his head back and forth to tear as much of the fabric in his mouth. His eyes were shut against the danger of struggling and he'd all but fully submerged himself save for the hands and feet clinging to the mutant to drag him under. The cloth tore and discovering that it wasn't flesh as he'd assumed, doubled him efforts. A death roll would have been next had he not been grabbed and wrested from his opponent, snapping and snarling at the RED.
He drew breath again and screeched, words gone from him. The RED's arm was his next point of attack, scratching frantically with both hands, everything below the head writhing and kicking and churning up water. And he still kept on screeching.
On one hand, Josif was somewhat dumbfounded by just how much Jericho could act like a dog. The chimera had scrambled around his arm and was now clinging to his waist like a sinking ship's mast. But Josif didn't blame the hybrid; all those heave -looking augments would certainly weigh him down and give him fear of water.
On the other hand, well, was the equivalent of a thrashing, angry crocodile. And damn soon this Sniper would be on both Josif's hands, if the man-croc didn't get a hold of himself, which he wouldn't anytime soon, it seemed. So both of the Soldier's dexterous hands clamped around the crocodile's throat, hoping to choke him just enough. Even an aninal would have the right to stop with the breath being strangled out of him. But with each ticking second, that fact seemed to become more doubtful, as the Sniper continued to struggle and Josif began to weaken.
The grip either wasn't working, or it was working fine and the man-croc just wanted a death wish. "Oh come on, nobody can be this daft!" Josif yelled, trying one last time to get into the Sniper's mind before the crippled thing was strangled to death.
