Headin' on Out (No longer on hold)

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

Nope, it's just me now...

Postby Penultimate Pi » Tue Feb 14, 2012 6:29 pm

Hah... so much...for your... plans...

Ah, shut it. I... or should I say we... have more strength than just two horses.

And, as much as nobody would like to admit it, Xavier was right. The limitation of water and Josif's control had pretty much been the only thing stopping the alter-Soldier from tearing apart that swamp monster himself. A couple of concentrated sedative would only serve to quell the real Josif, whose conscious was fading quickly, leaving the half-paralyzed body to Xavier's control.

But honestly, Xavier was just playing the parasite, not the victim. Despite the fact he was born of Josif's mind, controlling the adrenaline pumped body Josif was used to seemed a rather far cry, especially with it being tranquilized twice with horse-stunning darts. But heck, he was born of Josif; couldn't be that hard to move around a body. And the pools of adrenaline he had experienced in earlier encounters was naught more than a few sparks of persistence.

Ah well. He'd consider this a training session. Now, first, the arms...

To the outside world, Josif appeared to subconsciously snatch Henry's hand, twisting it in an iron grip that would make professional boxers cringe. Slowly, "Josif's" head rose up, revealing an unfamiliar set of eyes with a truly evil countenance about them.

Nice and slow... Give 'em some time to know they're screwed...

"Y--okay, THAT is something you're going to stop." Interrupted by the sudden movement coming from what should be two incapacitated REDs, Talbot shifted his aim from Henry to his fellow Soldier, moving close enough to nudge the side of Josif's head with the barrel. "Far's I'm concerned, you're just as liable for a load of buckshot as anything." God, this was really getting messy. So much for a routine security detail on his teammates--now one of them was as good as knocked out, another could be a traitor, and then there was Jericho. This was vaguely reminiscent of some of the times he'd been after BLUs in his Arena circuit, though the colors were inverted and he genuinely doubted that Josif was in his right mind right now. That expression didn't fit at all, and the laughter was just...wrong. Just what the hell was this Soldier even made of, anyway? Two tranq darts, and he was still moving?

Not taking his eyes off his teammate, Talbot tried putting together some sort of plan to make this work out. What if he could just knock Josif out with a quick shotgun stock to the face? That was a better option than making aforementioned face chunky salsa on the ground by pulling the trigger. That didn't solve how to get Connal back if the tranquilizer lasted for a while--well, he could carry him, but the Pyro along with all the equipment might be too much. This left the BLU, which was a worrying loose end. If Josif really was a traitor, judging from the recounted interactions, it was highly likely that Henry had been the one to, for lack of a better phrase, get Josif to stab the REDs in the back. That meant that he had to be dealt with, and not in a simple way, either. He'd just respawn if he was shot. Maybe they could incapacitate him and bring him back to RED base, and interrogate him to learn just how much information Josif had relayed? Hmn. He wrinkled his nose, expression settling right back into his usual stony calmness. Letting Josif (or whatever he was currently, anyway) see that he'd gotten to him would just be letting him win. Talbot had no intention of allowing that.

Jericho knew that something was wrong, and made that notion very VERY clear, growling and bearing his teeth as he shuffled himself in place to provide support for the drugged Pyro, ignoring the sharp pain of his wings getting smushed under Connal's weight as he got himself positioned so the firestarter was basically flopped over his back.
The moment he was sure he had Connal secure, he made to put as much distance between them and the downed Soldier, growling the whole way as he practically backed into a tree.
Something was wrong with Josif, something was very wrong, and whatever it was, the chimera wanted to be as far away from it as physically possible.

Even thinking seemed to take a decent amount of effort. This situation with Josif reminded the Pyro of... something, he just couldn't place what. And why was the ground moving? No, wait, he wasn't on the ground. It took a moment, but he realized someone was carrying him, and that someone was Jericho. That was good, he was safe with Jericho.

Connal managed to get his head turned a bit, but had to rely mostly on eye movement to try to follow what was going on. Damn, whatever shit that BLU had must work fast. Then he noticed that there was another RED on the ground, and he could only assume it was Talbot, what with the way he was strangling the Engineer.

No... Wait... That was Josif. The BLU shot Josif? Why the heck would he do that when they were on the same side? The only way that would make sense was if...

Shit. He had really fucked up, this time.

"GyAAAAHMOTHERAHCHRIST!!"

The next few moments would be something of a blur for Henry. A few seconds on, a few seconds off, like a game of blitz chess. Feeling the bones of his hand crumple like so much tissue paper, he fell to a knee, but he had been in worse pain before, and what few instincts he had kicked in. His remaining hand slipped under his boot, where he had his stun baton hidden. With a thumb, he cranked it up to a setting no tazer should be capable of reaching, and jammed it hard, right into one of those waiting eyes, feeling it give under the pressure.

"UUUGGRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!"

The guttural scream that escaped from the Alter-Soldier's throat rung with shattering power in the station's air. The electricity in the baton filling him with a jolt of reaction, he tore the baton out of his eye and away from the Engineer's grip. Within a moment, he was on his feet, and with blood oozing out of his injured eye Xavier set his remaining sights on Henry. The Alter-Soldier made no hesitation to swat Henry in the face with the baton, electricity crackling around the man's hair and knocking the Engineer back.

"I'M GONNA MAKE YOU SUFFER FOR THAT!"

Then aware of a shotgun being pointed at him, Xavier swung his arm, throwing the active baton with amazing speed right into the other Soldier's chest. The events happened in barely a few moments, catching everyone at a surprise. And all the while, a faint, weak voice spoke unregarded in Xavier's head.

oh god... no, stop...

Amidst the screams of pain and anger, Jericho was doing everything in his power to make himself and his Master disappear, dragging the Pyro's boneless bulk deeper into the cover provided by the swamp undergrowth and a toppled cypress tree. He hated to leave Talbot behind, he liked the quiet Soldier, but Connal came first, no matter what.
The chimera had quit growling the moment he'd gotten a tree between himself and the fight, opting instead to go the silent route for the better chances of escape, but it was hard to keep quiet while half-dragging another person who wasn't exactly in control of their limbs at the moment, the Pyro's boots thumping on roots and fallen branches, scraping wetly through the mud...

Gritting his teeth, the patchworked hybrid hissed softly to himself before he stopped in his tracks, slowly lowering himself to the ground and tilting himself so that Connal would slide off without too much discomfort, though the motion pulled hard enough on his wings to bring tears to his eyes. God, how he hated those useless things-!
Shaking off the worst of it, Jericho shifted his weight, leaning back on his heavy tail as he pulled himself up into a crouch, chancing a glance towards the fight before looking to Connal. He was careful, tilting his claws so they wouldn't catch and pull as he put his senses of touch and hearing to use figuring out just how bad off the Pyro was, nose twitching at the scent of strong chemicals. It didn't take long to find the dart, sticking out of the thick rubber along the firestarter's ribs, and the chimera couldn't help exhaling a small sigh.
No bullet, just drugs.
Connal would be okay.

With that worry lifted from his shoulders, Jericho turned his attention to the fight, listening a moment before crouching down low enough to where he could whisper in Connal's ear.
"You safe here. Need to help teammate."
A moment to nuzzle the Pyro's jaw in an affectionate manner, and the chimera jogged off, leaving the Pyro tucked away within the protective embrace of the roots of a fallen cypress tree as he kept low to the ground, moving as quickly and quietly as he could as he sought to get behind the crazed Soldier.

The massive hybrid struck like something out of a horror movie, leaping up from the mud and moss behind Josif with barely a sound. He used his weight and size to his advantage, knowing he outweighed the smaller man by at least 60 pounds with his tail alone, and did not hesitate to put his other physical assets to use as well, heavy claws digging into the Soldier's arms while his jaw unhinged and he sank his large venomous fangs deep into the man's throat, his tail whipping around to curl tightly around Josif's legs in a constricting motion that would quickly turn to loss of blood flow and numb limbs before moving on to straining on the bones.

In the space of a few seconds, his plans were basically set on fire and run over by a train. Henry's reaction to Josif's attack surprised him; if Josif was a traitor, they probably wouldn't be fighting. But then again, he added, Josif had already hurt Henry, and that right there certainly didn't seem to be Josif at all. Talbot had been mere seconds away from firing when the stun baton was thrown at him, connecting painfully and discharging a good amount of volts in a not-so-good place.

It hurt like a son of a bitch, that much he recognized. But the pain in his chest was far more worrying than that outside it, and he grit his teeth through it, clutching his shotgun tightly in one hand as he pulled his knife out of his pocket as best he could with muscle spasms happening. The Soldier tried to advance more in order to get his knife into not-Josif's neck, but he stopped short, staggering and quickly stabilizing his balance so he wouldn't fall over. Breathing was a bit more difficult than he'd like, but he could deal with it for now. When Jericho reappeared and began practically mauling the other Soldier, he couldn't help but crack a grin. That settled that, then--still, in one odd corner of his mind, Talbot wondered how high that baton had been turned up. Of all the ways to go, he didn't remember ever having been killed in a way that involved electricity. It figured that there would be odd ways to die out here.

Lying on the ground, somewhat stunned from having his face zapped by the equivalent of a small car battery, for the first time ever, Henry was glad that he was accident prone, and thus used to constant electrocution. The burn left from the baton stung like a bullet wound, but he tried to ignore it as he worked himself onto his feet. Watching the pair struggling, he decided he only had one shot, and if he wanted tis to end, he'd better take it.

"One side, beasty. This one's mine." Though the hybrid was strong and heavy, Henry was still an engineer, and with some effort, he managed to rip him off of the soldier. While Josif was still off-balance from the sudden shift in weight, he sent a shoulder into his stomach, pushing both of them over the edge of the platform. As he tried keep the soldier still, he watched a column of smoke rise over the trees.

"YOU AGAIN!"

Jericho... come on, stop him...

Another shout of anger from Xavier and the Alter-Soldier tried to tear Jericho from his back. Having been too late, his position was a very poor one, and he just couldn't get that decisive grip, especially while the chimera was tearing up his neck. Poising himself to slam his back against the station's wall, Xavier was caught off guard when the extra weight on his back was literally torn off, leaving deep wounds on his back and neck. Xavier desperately tried to defend against the incoming Engineer, but with futile efforts as the resulting blow threw his helmet off and made the pair plummet to the tracks.

Henry!

"AUUGHH-!" the Alter-Soldier shrieked, his voice suddenly cut off by his head landing with a painful crack on the iron rail. This rendered Xavier unconscious, and within the shared mind, Josif seized his chance. Though very weak in mind and body at this point, he still desperately forced himself to open his eyes again. An acute observer could see that the previously evil sense in his eyes had disappeared, with Josif's normal eyes showing instead.

Josif's senses returned to him, albeit with incredible pain. He could only see from one eye, and even that was an incredibly distorted view. His ears were undamaged, but sound was very sensitive, and he heard the train closing in fast. Despite how thankful Josif was that Henry would do this, the true Soldier didn't want the Engineer to go with him. Weakly, Josif reached up with his limp arm, tapping Henry for his attention:

"R-run..." the Soldier barely managed to choke out.

In all honesty, Jericho had been expecting interference. Came with the territory, really, everyone wanting to do their part in the battle to take down the crazy Soldier.
What caught him by surprise was who the interference came from and how they did it.
The BLU simply did not appear like someone to have any real physical strength to them, all skinny and long without any real muscle bulk. Of course, anyone of the Engineer class had to have some kind of strength, simple logic with what they were required to do on the field. One didn't lug around some 50 pounds of metal on their shoulder and not have some kind of muscle to them.
Even so, the action came so far out of left field that the chimera didn't even think to resist, pretty much letting himself be shoved aside as the Engineer tackled Josif onto the tracks. His teeth and claws still left some pretty nasty marks on the Soldier, that was a given, but they weren't nearly as bad as they could have been, since the patchworked hybrid had pretty much been planning on ripping the man's throat out and figuring out which bits of the asshole's anatomy tasted best raw while Josif choked to death on his own blood.
Classic tactic, really, it had worked very well several time in the past...

Jericho coughed, his jaw creaking audibly as he popped it back into place, licking blood from his teeth as he turned to see what was happening, forgetting to drop back down onto all fours as his ears twitched and flicked, following the commotion below before jerking up at hearing the loud report of the train's whistle.
He didn't think, still running on on the adrenaline rush that came with tasting fresh blood, turning and leaping from the platform, landing with a solid thump before he went charging for the Engineer. His teeth clamped down on the collar of the man's shirt, scraping on skin only slightly as he heaved the scrawny-looking BLU out of harm's way in a manner startling familiar to a mother cat carrying her young. Though with relatively light cargo and a less than formidable climb, the chimera still just made it, scrabbling back up onto the platform and hauling the Engineer up with him just as the train was coming up to them, its brakes squealing as it began to slow down for the platform stop.

[Gonna go ahead and finish myself off here.]

Too weak to act further, Josif just barely recognized the distorted shape of the chimera pulling the Engineer off the rails. The roar of the train was now deafening to Josif's ears. The Soldier, without the strength to do anything more, silently thanked both the members of RED and BLU for what they had done for him, however little it may have been.

Then the train squealed into the station, and the sickening squelch of crushed bone and gore was just barely audible over the engine and it's brakes. Not for the first time, Xavier was dead, along with Josif. And at that moment, neither of them were mourned. Swamp Rat's Respawn system would never pick him up; not because of a power failure, but due to the fact that another system had claimed him.

(Cap'n! We're losin' power!)

Henry would have heard the sound of snapping bones, but he was busy being dragged bodily up a three foot wooden cliff. When he finally got to his feet, it was only for a moment as he scrambled off of the platform, searching desperately for the hidden pyro. Following the not-so-subtle signs of a body dragged through the mud, he finally spotted the flash of red that told him where the sedated man lay.

He jogged backwards for a moment, turning to the hybrid. "Thanks for teh rescue, but if you want your boy to live past the next few minutes, you probably shouldnt stop me from doing what I'm about to do." With that, he ran. Halfway there he reached into his boot once more and from it he pulled a long, wicked looking syringe, the tip coated in rubber to keep from stabbing him in the leg. When he reached the man's unconcious body, he yanked the rubber off and went straight to his job. A swift stab to the chest, and a large dose of adrenaline was pulsing hrough his veins, counteracting the sedative and forcing hs body to process it.

Hopefully, it wasn't too late, and his brain hadn't yet lost function.

((Divert power from the shields! Full steam ahead!))

If asked about it later, Connal would only be able to describe what he went through as dreaming about clouds. It was soft, dulled, but still somehow pleasant. Like he had been lying on top of one, and now was sinking into it. He was going down, further and further... Until, out of seemingly nowhere, pain erupted in the center of his chest. To his fogged mind, it was a spear. No, a hook. A giant fishing hook, pulling him up through the comfortable cloud, at a speed faster than he could register. In what felt to the Pyro like an eye blink, he was ripped up and out of his dream with a gasp, looking up to a man. A man wearing blue.

Who was holding his hands right over the pain in the redhead's chest.

A fist was thrown towards the man's face before Connal could recognize who it was, which was quickly followed by a shouted, "Sonova bitch!"

Jericho panted for breath, tongue lolling out of his mouth as he struggled to recuperate from the rush of the past scarce moments of time. It'd been some time since he'd last hauled people around...
He jerked up at hearing the BLU struggling upright, and scrambled to try and keep up when the Engineer went running off. Towards Connal. He didn't know what the man intended to do, but at the rate things were going, he doubted it would be any good.
Too bad he wasn't quick enough on the draw to prevent his Master from getting stabbed in the chest with the largest needle he'd ever seen.
The chimera whirled, roaring his supreme distaste with the BLU's actions, but just as he was about to pounce and give the man what for, Connal was up and 'giving what for' for him.
To which he could really only stare, not sure what to make of the situation.

Henry thumped onto his ass, nose just slightly bent for the second time since entering the swamp. Luckily, it didn't bleed as badly as the first, so he couldn't help but laugh as he grabbed the pyro's arm and yanked him onto his feet, then dusted off his shoulders. "Feeling better, then? Next time think before you strangle, and I won't have to unload chemicals into your face. That being said, you should be good now. Adrenaline does it's job damn well, and other than a major crash you'll be going through in about an hour, there won't be any side-effects."

Henry forced the man's hand into his again. "Once again, Henry Adams."

"Uhh..." Connal oh so intelligently replied, trying to get his thoughts back in order. What the hell happened while he was conked out? Why was this BLU fussing all over him like they were on the same team? "I, uh... 'M Reid. Connal Reid." Everything was just... so strange. "...Where's Josif? Christ, why is this needle still in me!?" The Pyro couldn't tell which was more disconcerting. "The fuck'd I miss...?"

"Josif's dead. Again. Train this time."
Jericho had made his decision regarding his reaction to this more than a little odd situation; Pretend everything was normal and there was nothing to worry about. He had a feeling acting otherwise would have him hiding under the couch for a few weeks trying to wrap his brain around everything.
The chimera shouldered his way between the BLU and his Master, sitting up to free a hand and yank out the adrenaline needle before it was forgotten again, then turned to the Engineer. Henry, wasn't it?
"You should get your hand tended to."
