The burning, the burning! (CLOSED, EVERYONE IS DEAD)

The swamp that is a fixture surrounding the battlefield. The swamp, like most, is quite full of trees, moss, and most notably leeches. There are some strange things that pop out of the waters; are you willing to brave into them?

The burning, the burning! (CLOSED, EVERYONE IS DEAD)

Postby Tentacles » Tue Dec 13, 2011 12:19 am

Life at Swamp Rat had turned unexpectedly stressful.

First, there was nobody to fight. Then when BLUs turned up, nobody killed them where they stood, in fact, it was a fucking party with the enemy for god's sake.

Second was the incident with his tail, the stray coil of barbed wire that chewed it up. Besides dealing with that German prick, he wasn't going to get near the water now for weeks. He couldn't even look at the black swamp without feeling like he was being mocked.

Third...everyone seemed to have vanished. Everyone. The base was hauntingly empty, and what he and the strange tentacled man had found stuck in his mind like a twisting nail...

Fuck it. There was only one thing that felt real anymore.

He had carted out pounds and pounds of books from the library, multiple trips under the warm, midday sun; dry, dismal things that would be excellent kindling. No need for excellerant; he wanted this shit to burn for hours. Plus he didn't want to burn the RED base down by accident either.

Stacking them in a clearing far from the trees, the docks, anything that would light up, he stacked his decent sized pile of worthless literary trash. The Pyro puffed the air with his flamethrower a few times, grinning wickedly under his mask.

Somethings never change.

Josif didn't care.

He simply didn't.

That man was doing what was probably the most stupid thing anyone could've done yet here, and Josif would be a pretty pink princess in Wonderland before THAT happened.

As he was drawing near, the Soldier could see. It was the books; all classic, old, musty books from the library. Some ageless classics, others passive tales. But it was all fuel to that Pyro's desires. To cause the largest goddamn bonfire this side of the country. Like hell that would happen, not on Josif's watch.

Josif marched up to the pyromaniac, who was testing his flamethrower like revving an engine. Standing at a broad, firm attention, Josif addressed the Pyro in a stern, booming voice.

"I won't ask what you're doing, but I WILL order you to STOP IT."

The tiny Pyro looked up at Josif, full of contempt even behind those black out lenses. He slung his flamethrower over his shoulder, annoyed. So fucking close, and then this clown had to show up. The same nut from Halloween who showed up dressed as god-knows-what walked out of the fucking Ren Fairre and told him not to cut down a gaggle of BLUs that descended on his team.

It didn't really matter, did it?

"Wuhi?" James challenged back. His gaze kept flicking back to the glorious pile of books, begging to be burned...

Connal was, generally speaking, upset.

He had seen the note inviting him to start a fire, which wasn't particularly upsetting by itself. It wasn't the reason he was out there, in the full outfit, toting his flamethrower and grumbling nonsense under his breath. No, it was the note underneath that one. "NOBODY liked that." The image of that one fucking sentence wouldn't get out of his mind. It wasn't his fault. He just wanted to throw a party, to get the team fucking together for once, to stop feeling like he was so alone... How the hell was he supposed to know that BLUs would show? How was he supposed to know what to do once they had?

"NOBODY liked that."

God damn it, it hadn't even been about the fire, for once. It was about something that he hadn't felt once, not one single time, since he arrived. Since people started disappearing. Since he was attacked, alone, in the swamp for what still seemed like no fucking reason. It was supposed to help him feel like he was part of the team. Like there was a team to be a part of.

"NOBODY liked that."

Well, fuck that. Connal decided, right then and there, that he was going to find this other Pyro and help him. He could use a nice, big fire to relax, and having someone around that would understand... That would help. It had to. He didn't even know where he was going, but it didn't matter. The mud was keeping it's shape better in the cooler air, so heavy bootprints were easier to follow. With his luck, though, he might have been following the wrong prints. That would be perfect, wouldn't it? Chalk up yet another stupid fucking mistake...

When the Pyro found out that he was, in fact, headed in the right direction, he didn't know whether or not to be relieved. There he was, the same guy that had dressed up as some sort of ancient gladiator thing for the Halloween party that apparently nobody fucking liked... "Wudda fuhh!?" he shouted, putting a hand over his mask for a moment. There was no way he was here to participate. Just fucking perfect.

Ignoring the Pyro's confused attitude, Josif continued:

"I bet you haven't even thought for a SECOND just WHAT you are doing. You were there at that 'party', right?" Without waiting for an answer, Josif pointed to the books. "That party went haywire because the bonfire attracted the BLUs. If you ignite all those books, you're practically BEGGING BLU to investigate."

Josif gave a long, hard stare, letting the words sink in. "And you'd kill them, wouldn't you? Breaking that peace treaty early would be EXACTLY what you'd be doing. And with practically half a team left, no leader, and NO RESPAWN. WE'D ALL BE BURNING IN FLAMES!" Josif was yelling now, stomping up to snag a fistful of firesuit-collar in his muscled hands.

"WE'D ALL BE BURNING, SMOLDERING CORPSES ON THE GROUND! I BET YOU'D LIKE THAT, WOULDN'T YOU? WOULDN'T YOU!?"

Then he turned around. Josif looked, and with bloodshot eyes stared at him. The OTHER Pyro. Josif knew he had brought his shotgun for a reason. He drew it, and with one hand still wrangling the first Pyro's collar he used the other to point the weapon at the new Pyro. Then he said, in a dark, almost demonic tone:

"And you... You, I actually tried to like... TRIED to like, and yet you're helping him. HELPING HIM!"

Josif, fueled by his grueling nightmares, his pent stress, and the insults from his past, had gone absolutely stark raving mad.

There were few things worse then being manhandled in the Pyro's eyes, as well as few things worse then being blue balled by a goddamn Solly who thought he knew about fire. It was the same at every base; jesus christ these people didn't know a controlled fire when they saw one...

"WE'D ALL BE BURNING, SMOLDERING CORPSES ON THE GROUND! I BET YOU'D LIKE THAT, WOULDN'T YOU? WOULDN'T YOU!?"

To be honest, the idea was starting to hold some appeal. It was perhaps a blessing the Soldier couldn't see the Pyro's unamused expression behind the mask, which mercifully also provided a numbing barrier between the slippery arsonist and Josif. Fuck the BLUs, if they investigate and their respawn is off, that's their problem...

Thank god the other guy showed up. Maybe the veteran Pyro could talk some sense into this huge brutish Soldier before...

Oh. Well. That was quite unexpected.

The Pyro was used to being shouted at, reprimanded, fuck, he even found himself on the receiving end of goddamn riding crop more then once thanks to his former Solly. But threatening other team mates was supposed to be the biggest taboo. This bastard was going to blow their heads off, and over what? A little fun in the swamp?

He grabbed hold of the meaty hand that was currently held a little more then a fistful of his hazard suit, struggling. "Whhtt th' FHUCK arh yuh dhungg!?" realizing it was useless to try and break the grip manually, he aimed the flamethrower for the Soldier's torso and flicked it on, releasing an airblast he hoped would send the jerk flying.

Okay, what the hell just happened? Connal froze, having no clue how to react or what to do. No Respawn? Since when? He couldn't remember anyone ever saying it was off. Now that he was thinking about it, he couldn't remember anyone saying it was on, either. But things just went from bad to strange. Next thing the Michigander knew, the Soldier had the other Pyro by the collar, and there was a gun pointed at himself.

It wasn't even so much the fact that a teammate had his weapon pointed at him. It was that this guy was acting so completely different than any of the times he had seen him, before. Hell, just the other day, this man had greeted their new Spy, and had seemed perfectly okay. Now...

Connal shifted his weight from foot to foot, his shoulders slightly hunched. Oh god, what should he do? These were both teammates, they were supposed to be off limits as far as violence was concerned. However, if he did nothing, then two of them could be killed. With a chance of not Respawning. If he ran over and tried to help, he would get shot. He'd been shot by different kinds of handguns, and even a hunting rifle once, on accident, but not a shotgun. Then the other Pyro raised his flamethrower, and for one second he thought he was going to watch a teammate light up. He wasn't sure if he was thankful or slightly disappointed when it was air that came out. Oh, why was he still just standing there, not doing anything? He should help, but... Help who? And how?

Damn it.

Kill them now... They're traitors, both of them. The others will understand...

You can make them.

Josif leered at the second Pyro. He had a name, actually. Connal. No use having a name now, about to be dead and all. T'was the man's own fault, for trying to get the whole of them killed. And the first Pyro was struggling now. It was probably pissed. IT. A freak, IT was*. A dead freak, too. Josif moved to clamp his hand around the thing's throat and choke the life out of it...

Then he saw the raised flamethrower. The mad Soldier cried out in fury, lunging with the butt of the shotgun to knock it away. Too late. A surge of air thrust at him, knocking the two of them away from each other. Josif flew, as if a truck had rammed him, and slammed his back on a tree. He staggered, but kept standing, letting out a beastly growl. That freak was going to PAY, now.

The Pyro had not fared as well, trying to stand up from being knocked over. Still keeping the steel grip on the shot gun, Josif raised it again, aiming right at the masked face. A pull of the trigger, and the Pyro would soon have NO face.

{Connal is in danger. CUE THE GUARD DOG!}

Maybe it was animal instinct. Sharp ears. A stray scent.
SOMETHING.
All Jericho knew was something Bad was going down and his Master was in the middle of it, RIGHT WHERE HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE.
The chimera skidded around a corner in the base, ears pricked and nostrils flared as he ran as fast as he could being dragged down by his heavy tail, bolting for the stairs. He barely noticed the nearly empty library, catching a whiff of scent coming in through the cracked common room window.
He didn't stop, didn't even bother to slow down, charging across the floor and smashing through the window without a second thought.
It hurt, that he would not deny, glass tearing through his borrowed shirt and glancing off his heavier scales to slash into his skin, then the impact that made his limbs ache, but he continued onward, following the scent of his Master and the distinctive scent of gunpowder that made his nostrils itch.

He was breathing heavily by the time he made it over to the scene, but it didn't matter to him because his Master was in danger.
A feral snarl, and if the Soldier didn't react quick enough, he would be finding a mouthful of sharp fangs and two handfuls of claws digging into him from behind as the chimera moved to protect his Master.

Well. That was stupid. As he was sent flying backwards, his attempts at separating Heavy's from their precious Medics in the middle of an Uber flashed before his eyes, his mind recalling how the airblasts often worked, but left him perforated spectacularly.

He hit the dirt, landing on his wounded tail. The impact sent stars into his eyes, hissing in pain as the stitches split through the delicate flesh and blood started to pool inside his suit. Jesus christ, he thought it hurt before...

The slippery Pyro tried to get to his feet, and found himself face to face with the barrel end of the shotgun. What had he always done wrong with breaking up an uber? Oh yes. Getting the fuck out of there before he had an enraged gun toting moron mow him down. Something he had failed to do this time as well.

James started to scramble backwards, hands held up, when he saw that patchwork monster running towards them. God no. That Solly would blow that poor thing's goddamn head off. "JJrrrchu! Nuh!"

There was a crash.

Josif heard it, far off. Insanity had done little to weaken his senses. There was something stomping, rapid footsteps... A dog? No- A chimera. There was one at the base. And it was here, too. It was coming. For him.

Memories flashed through his mind. A dock, alone in a swamp. A spy, no longer among them. A monstrous, muscled man. Lunging. Josif swung his shotgun around, keeping it aside to fire at will. He unstrapped his Market Gardener from his belt with his free hand, flipping the pick edge to face ready.

This had happened before, and this time, he wouldn't hesitate. For his own sake, never. That fucking chimera was gonna be lunch when he would be done with it.

Just another traitor to add to the many...

Connal had been distracted for a moment by a crash, before being drawn back to the fight. That other Pyro looked like he had gotten hurt by that landing, the way his movements slowed and stiffened. There were more sounds, but it wasn't until Josif turned and the other Pyro shouted that the Michigander turned to look, himself.

Dear God, no.

There was no way around it, they were going to kill each other. A dozen or so images seemed to fill his mind at once, each even more unpleasant than the last. With Respawn now being in doubt...

The redhead was moving even before he had made a conscious decision. He was charging straight for Josif, having left his flamethrower behind. It was probably an incredibly stupid thing to do, but if he could get the Soldier knocked down and unarmed, he might be able to convince Jericho to hang back. Just because he didn't know what in the hell happened to his teammate didn't mean he stopped being one. Maybe they could just... lock him in a supply closet, or something. The one with all the hats.

Though animal in appearance, Jericho wasn't stupid. He recognized he was in danger, and he knew he was likely to get very badly hurt.
But his Master came first, Master always came first, especially when his Master was good to him like Connal.
The chimera saw the gun swing aside, the opposite hand bringing a large shovel to bear, and he quickly ducked and rolled, cringing in pain for a split second when one wing was caught under him. He managed to recover well enough, though one wing refused to fold properly anymore, and he skidded around to come in from the side not bearing a gun.
A gun could snap up and kill him straight out, but the shovel needed leverage, a swing, and that meant time. Time he could use.

Jericho huffed, still breathing heavily from his mad dash from the base, then lunged, using his heavily muscled tail and legs to launch himself forward. Horns first, then teeth and claws.

((Sorry about that, James is literally butthurt, and with two other attackers...but let's do this!))

This was a completely unprecedented turn of events. Connal and his attack dog seemed to be going in for the kill, or at least, the tackle. Fuck this. Maybe the three of them had a chance at taking him down if they rushed him all at once.

Or getting shot in the face. One of those.

Trying to stand just produced a sharp, intense pain as he stumbled to his feet, biting off a scream. Abandoning his own flamethrower, he ran at Josif, aiming his short frame straight at the man's waist, in the hopes of knocking him off balance.

Josif was now surrounded by three angry teammates, all rushing toward him. In any other given situation, Josif would try to take advantage over one and get away quickly to a better position.

But Josif was beyond reason right now.

His miss against the Dog-freak had just angered him further, and he needed to vent it. He glanced at the closest Pyro, Connal, and with no second thought slammed into him, using the spade to knock him to the dirt. A snarl diverted Josif's attention, and he looked up to find the dog-freak coming at him again. This time, he knocked it away with the shovel, sending the chimera stumbling to the side. The furious Soldier threw the Market Gardener after it with a mighty arm.

Josif stood up, a firm boot on Connal's chest. The Soldier, now inhumanly twitching, turned his head to face the remaining Pyro, who was still trying to make an effort at attack. That Pyro, who had tried to spell doom to all of them...

"Die, bastard!" Josif yelled, raising the shotgun and pulling the trigger.

(look at me I'm being dramatic and nobody can stop me la la la la la)

Time seemed to stand agonizingly still as James found himself staring into the barrel of the shotgun once more. He heard the crack, the astronomically loud report of the shotgun.

His skin seemed to turn to ice as his heart dropped into his stomach.

In an instant, the Pyro's head was split asunder, the powerful weapon effectively decapitating him with a single shot. Skull fragments, bits of brain and black slippery skin were sent to the winds as a massive gush, geyser-like, of blood escaped from his gasping neck. A toothless jawbone flew straight up into the air, bouncing off Josif's head. Gurgling, the headless corpse of the salamander dropped to its knees, still twitching violently as it finally fell over, blood seeping into the grass.

After a few moments, the grisly sight vanished in a puff of red vapor, whisking the Pyro away to Respawn, with only a quickly congealing puddle of gore to prove James had even been there at all.

The chimera yelped as he was kicked aside, tumbling sideways and tripping over his own paws. Sheer luck kept him from rolling and crippling his other wing, and he shook his head, grimacing at the feel of a tooth having gotten knocked loose.
He just about leapt out of his skin at the sharp, echoing report of the shotgun, and he lurched up with a panicked cry, eyes wide and ears pinned back as he cast about in search of the familiar rubber-suited shape of his Master, forgetting for the moment that there were actually two such forms present on the scene.
Jericho froze upon seeing the headless corpse, his normally slitted pupils blown wide as he stared, unable to move, unable to think.

Then the body disappeared, and he lost it.

A terrible howl ripped from his throat, mouth opening impossibly wide as he rose to his full height, giving the crazed Soldier a good look at all his sharp carnivorous teeth and the poisonous fangs that unfolded from his upper jaw before he lunged forward, clamping down on Josif's throat and digging his claws into the man's face.

One can imagine, being bit in the face and neck doesn't feel very good. So when Josif felt it, the anger he had vented returned threefold.

Josif matched Jericho's roar with inhuman tones, relentlessly counterattacking. He bashed and tore at the chimera, managing to get the freak slightly off his neck. Then, clasping Jericho by the jaws, the ultimately maddened Soldier poured anger into strength. With powerful, almost superhuman force, he dislocated the freak-dog's jaw and threw the thing into a faraway tree. Josif heard the satisfying crunch of breaking bones, and knew that vengeance was nearly his.

Then he gazed down at the remaining Pyro, still caught under his boot. Ignoring the blood tricking from his face, Josif stooped down and grabbed Connal violently. How would he die, the worthless traitor?

Perhaps he shouldn't have been surprised at how easily he had been knocked over, experienced as the Soldier must have been, but Josif didn't look like he would have been strong enough to fling around an almost two-hundred pound man. Connal's breath caught in his throat when the gun went off, nearly every muscle in his body seemed to freeze. The weight of the situation really sunk in as the headless body dropped to the ground. It almost looked like it had fallen up, the way he was watching it while lying on his back.

He should have been able to stop this. There were many times he had been jumped, so taking down one man should not have been such a problem, even if he wasn't allowed to kill him. So what the hell happened? Then, before the redhead could so much as shout, Jericho was lunging again. Dear God, is this what had happened to the others? Had they lost their minds from not being able to fight BLU, and instead torn each other apart? Was Respawn really off...?

It was probably stupid, what he did next. The other Pyro was dead, Jericho was probably dead, and it was clear Josif wanted to do the same to him. However, instead of struggling to get free, instead of fighting back, Connal instead reached up and took his mask off. His brow was furrowed, but in contrast eyes wide. His upper lip curled slightly on the left, the rest of it in a slightly open frown. "Why...?" For some reason, he just needed to know what set the normally laid back Soldier so badly.

"...Why? What do you mean WHY?" Josif screeched. He was thoroughly offended, now; a Pyro who had wanted his own team dead, now pleading for forgiveness? ...Come to think of it, that meant good things. Josif smiled wickedly, beginning to laugh. It means I'm superior, a stronger man, a true champion, a monster on the battlefield-

That last thought hit him somewhere tender. A monster? Him?

No. Just sarcasm, a metaphor...

Josif stopped laughing, and remembered. The man in front of him; Connal, a well-thought, friendly Pyro to those he knew well, and master of the Soldier-chimera, Jericho...

Stop that. He agreed with the other one, both of them are traitors!

Jericho, the misuderstood-by-many chimera who Josif had taking a good liking to. They had very much in common, actually...

Stop thinking, you fool! Kill the man already!

They were both Soldiers, for one. They had both been through bad times, but had found solace with who they trusted. And moreover, they both held a ravenous monster within themselves, a side that neither wished to accept.

KILL HIM, YOU FOOL!

Josif cried out, clutching his head, blood pouring down his face. He withdrew a hand, and saw it coated with the blood of many, not just him. Josif didn't want to be this. He was better; a true, established man of honor!

SILENCE! YOU ARE A MONSTER! NOW ACT LIKE ONE AND MURDER!

There was still a chance. Josif stepped off of Connal, and rushed for the unlit tinder. He quelled this fiend once, and he'd do it again, too!

And again, it would mean his life.

[Starting to wrap this up.]
