THE EVENT BEGINS!

THE EVENT BEGINS!

Postby Puffin » Sun Jul 15, 2012 1:41 pm

So, as promised, the day we've all been waiting for: The day the swamp monster dies! We have an excellent plan thought up by Pi and we are largely ready to begin, and we have a whole bunch of fun stuff planned for the aftermath!
HOWEVER, in the interest of time and speed, there are a few ground rules this time.

1. KEEPING THINGS MOVING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN A STRICT TURN ORDER. So long as there are at least 3 posts between your last post, and the monster himself has had time to react, feel free to keep things moving. Let's not have this event take another three months.

2. IF AN ADMIN TELLS YOU IT'S YOUR TURN, IT IS YOUR TURN. Do not argue. This is a group effort, and we need everyone to contribute to have a fun, functional thread. If an admin (that is, Armored, Henry, or myself) is telling you to go, we probably have a good reason.

3. PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED. The plan thought up needs everyone's help, so pretty much every character has a chance to do their part. If you refuse to post you will likely be skipped over and left behind. Repeated offenses will result in temporary banning.

4. RUFUS, NIKLAS, AND JAMES MUST DIE. All three of these characters have planned glitches that require their deaths at some point during the thread. It is not set in stone HOW they will die, but it is guaranteed to happen at some point. Other characters may die as well, but these three are a must.

5. THE PLAN HAS BEEN EXPLAINED IN-CHARACTER OFFSCREEN. This was done in the interest of saving time. I will be posting a detailed version of the plans as well as the squads here in this thread, which you can look back at for reference. If your character has any in-character questions, ask them at the beginning of the thread, because once we start there's no turning back. Keep in mind the plan is more of a general framework, so deviations will occur.

6. IF AN ADMIN TIMESKIPS THINGS TO MOVE THEM ALONG, DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. Like we said above, no one wants this to last another three months.

7. HAVE FUN! This is a huge event, and there's a lot of cool things that are going to happen!

If you have any questions, please contact an admin. Happy posting everybody, let's kick some ass!

FIRST OFF: Another shout-out to Pi for coming up with this plan, and for being the only person to submit a plan in the first place.

The Plan:

The monster is currently blind. Without its eyes, it has to resort to its senses of smell and hearing to track prey. We are going to use these facts to our advantage.

Three squads of various team members will assemble spread out near an area of water surrounded by land from at least three sides. One person, likely a fast one, will act as bait to attract the monster while the squads get out of sight. When the monster emerges, the bait will lure him onto land as far as possible. This is where we strike.

The first squad, at the narrow end of the shoals behind the bait, should consist of powerful strikers such as Soldiers, Demomen and Snipers. As soon as the monster is in range, they will fire at the monster's face, where it is most vulnerable. The bait will fall back and provide assistance, while the squad keeps out of the monster's range. With enough damage at once, it will either be stunned for a moment, lash out wildly and/or attempt to retreat. As soon as it does the latter, we will launch the second phase.

Squads 2 and 3 will be on either side of the monster, and should consist of rapid-fire attackers, such as Heavies and Engineers. After the first squad launches their attack, they will approach the monster, using barrages of bullets to attack the monster from behind in a pincher attack. This should prevent it from escaping into the water again, and even coax it further onto land, perhaps making it beach itself.

At this point, the battle can go either of two ways. First off is the ideal situation, in which the monster becomes cornered. Attacks from all sides will effectively surround the monster, preventing escape. For the most part, close range classes such as Scouts and Pyros will avoid combat, as close range is where the monster is at its strongest. When the monster slows down and becomes more stationary, then the aforementioned classes can add additional firepower. With enough brutality, the monster will, eventually, die.

The other direction is if the monster DOES escape into the water. In this case, mercenaries consisting of the long range and explosive damage types will pursue the monster, firing shots after it. Should the monster escape entirely, we can simply leave it; we should've done enough damage that it will eventually wear itself out. It seems unlikely that this scenario will happen, but the plan is vague enough that it shouldn't prove a major problem, and at the same time put casualties at a minimum.
